Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The House of Tudor traces its roots back to the Kingdom of Gwynedd in North Wales. Who was the earliest identifiable member of the family?

Answer: Ednyfed Fychan

Ednyfed Fychan was seneschal (steward) to the rulers of Gwynned. This allowed him to amass large amounts of property and to marry the daughter of Rhys, Prince of South Wales. (His year of birth is unknown, but he died in 1246). Ednyfed's grandson, Tudur ap Goronwy paid homage to the first English Prince of Wales in 1301.
2. By the beginnings of the 1400s, a family member, Tudor ap Goronwy the Second, married into the family of Welsh leader Owain Glyn Dwr. Glyn Dwr rose in revolt against the English, with disastrous results for the Tudor family. Which king did Glyn Dwr revolt against?

Answer: Henry IV

Despite the fact that the Tudor brothers had all served Richard II in some capacity or another, they joined with their uncle in revolt. Rhys ap Tudur was executed at Chester in 1412. All their vast estates were confiscated with the exception of Penmynydd in Anglesey. A branch of the family remained there until it died out towards the end of the seventeenth century.
3. The youngest son of the dead Tudor brothers was taken into royal service and educated in the household of Henry V. His son Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur (Owen Tudor) was born sometime afterwards and in the 1420s returned to service in the household of which royal widow?

Answer: Katherine of Valois

Owen returned to service with the widowed queen and ended up marrying her in 1429 or 1432. She bore him four children: Edmund, Jasper, Owen, and a daughter.
4. In 1436 Katherine retired to an abbey to seek a cure for an ailment that had plagued her for some time. To which abbey did she retire?

Answer: Abbey of Bermondsey in London

Katherine died at the Abbey of Bermondsey on 3 January, 1437.
5. By 1452, the daughter of Owen and Katherine had disappeared, possibly entering a nunnery. Their son Owen took holy orders and became a monk at Westminster. In November 1452, the elder sons were given titles by their half-brother the king. Which titles were they given?

Answer: Earls of Richmond and Pembroke

Edmund Tudor was created the Earl of Richmond. His grandson Henry VIII passed the title on to Henry Fitzroy, his illegitimate son by Bessie Blount.
6. The Tudor clan took another immeasurable step up the social ladder in 1455, when Edmund Tudor, Duke of Richmond, married Lady Margaret Beaufort. The bride was a great-great granddaughter of which king?

Answer: Edward III

The Beaufort family was a result of an affair between John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III, and Katherine Swynford, his daughter's governess.
7. Margaret Beaufort soon found herself pregnant and a widow in short order. She was quickly taken in by her husband's brother and spirited off to Wales. The future Henry VII was born in which Welsh castle?

Answer: Pembroke Castle

As the new baby's uncle was the Earl of Pembroke, it seems logical that he would be born at Pembroke Castle in Pembrokeshire. It was founded in 1093 by Roger of Montgomery. It provided a base of operations for the Norman attacks on Ireland.
8. By 1469,the Yorkist king Edward IV had a falling out with his most powerful supporter, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. What was this powerful peer's nickname?

Answer: Kingmaker

Lawmender is the nickname of Magnus VI of Norway. Richard I of England was known as the Lion Heart. Ferdinand VI of Spain was called the Learned because of his intellectual pursuits. The Kingmaker had supported the Yorkist Edward IV, but changed sides to the Lancastrians. He was killed fighting for his new cause at the Battle of Barnet on Easter Day, 1471.
9. After the Battle of Barnet, Jasper and Henry Tudor fled to friendlier territory in France. There they were shielded/jailed by Duke Francis. In what province of France were they confined?

Answer: Brittany

Jasper and Henry were deprived of their English servants and guarded by Frenchmen, while Duke Francis collected a handsome sum from King Edward IV to make certain that the two Tudors should "never procure his (Edward's) harm in any manner or way."
10. After the death of Edward IV in April 1483, the throne was claimed by his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester. He had the marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville declared invalid. This made his two young nephews (one of them Edward V) illegitimate. On what grounds was this marriage conveniently declared invalid?

Answer: Edward IV had a precontract with Lady Eleanor Butler

No one truly knows what happened to the "Little Princes in the Tower." After having been locked in the Tower, they were never seen again after Midsummer, 1483. Despite the arguments in Richard's favor, all he needed to do was to produce his nephews for inspection, and the myriad rumours would have died a natural death.
