Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name given to every male in Cleopatra's family?

Answer: Ptolemy

Ptolemy was the name of the first Greek pharaoh of Egypt (Alexander the Great's half brother). After that it was tradition for every male kid in the family to have that name! Lack of imagination?

Traditional girl's names were Arsinoe, Berenice, and of course Cleopatra!
2. How many Roman lovers did Cleopatra have?

Answer: 2

Cleopatra's two Roman loves were Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. She met Caesar in 47 B.C, and Marc Antony in 41 B.C. Some say she seduced these men for power, but she probably did it for love.
3. Which of these phrases did Cleopatra allegedly say?

Answer: I will not be triumphed over

The other quotes are from Marc Antony, Julius Caesar and Shakespeare.
Indeed, she never was triumphed over; with her level head she defeated three of the world's most powerful men in a way no one could ever guess!
4. Which one of these languages did Cleopatra not speak?

Answer: Italian

Although Cleopatra didn't speak Italian, she spoke its early form: Latin. Along with Hebrew, Greek, Egyptian, and Latin, Cleopatra also spoke Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Ethiopian. She was clearly a very learned woman with a gift for many tongues.
5. How was Cleopatra's mortal enemy, Octavian, related to Julius Caesar?

Answer: great nephew

Caesar only had two children, a daughter, Julia, and his illegimate son, Casarion with Cleopatra. Octavian's mother was the daughter of Caesar's sister. Confusing?
Although Caesar was a smart man, I'm sure he never foretold the trouble that would occur between his lover and great nephew!
6. What clever method is 21 year old Cleopatra said to have used used to sneak into the great Caesar's chambers?

Answer: she had herself rolled up in a carpet that was to be delivered to Caesar

Showing her cleverness, in 47 BCE, Cleopatra had to sneak into the palace because her brother, Ptolemy XIII, had sent her into exile. When Caesar saw her roll out of that rug, he was probably thinking something like "By Jove, what is going on here?" Anyway, her wit and charm took Caesar's breath away, and they became lovers.
7. In what city did Cleopatra meet Marc Antony?

Answer: Tarsus

In 41 BCE, Marc Antony summoned Cleopatra to meet him in Tarsus (in modern Turkey). She delayed coming, probably to show that a queen does not beckon to the calls of a Roman triumvir.
When she did come it was on a golden boat with herself dressed up as Venus ... and just like Caesar, Antony was a goner. Cleopatra sure knew how to travel in style!
8. What did Cleopatra look like?

Answer: nobody knows

The only likenesses of Cleopatra are carvings, coins, and Roman busts and we have no clue how idealized those are!
Cleopatra had a Greek father, and probably wasn't very tall if she could be rolled up into a rug. Nobody even knows if she was beautiful, but with her wit, charm, intelligence, and allure she didn't even need beauty!
9. How did Cleopatra die?

Answer: She killed herself

After being defeated, Antony and Cleopatra waited in hiding. One day, Antony (falsely) learned that Cleopatra was dead. He stabbed himself and died in her arms ...
Afterward, Octavian was betting on keeping Cleopatra alive to shame her, but she had other plans. By the time he got there, it was too late: she had killed herself.

She was buried next to Marc Antony.
10. Which actress played Cleopatra in the 1963 movie "Cleopatra"?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

The movie was a great success earning nearly 30 million dollars. After that one, many more movies have been made of Cleopatra.

Even after two thousand years the world still hasn't forgotten Cleopatra!
