Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are high pressure airbags and low pressure airbags.

Answer: True

High pressure airbags are most commonly used for vehicle rescues, but low pressure airbags can also be used.
2. When should a fireman wear an S.C.B.A.?

Answer: All of these

S.C.B.A. stands for self contained breathing apparatus. An S.C.B.A should be worn to dumpster fire, as one never knows what exactly is burning in there. The apparatus should also be worn to a car fire, as cars are made from a lot of plastic and rubber material.

It should also be worn to a house fire, as there are materials in the house, such as aerosol cans, gas stoves, etc., that can cause you to have difficulty in breathing.
3. Which kind of camera is most likely to be used for search and rescue?

Answer: Thermal Imaging Camera

Considering that everything around us gives off some kind of heat, and considering that it is made up of long wavelength infrared radiation, which is invisible to the human eye, thermal imaging converts this heat or radiation to a visible light picture that we can see.

A thermal camera has a sensor that converts infrared radiation into a visible light picture. As long wavelength infrared radiation passes effortlessly through even the densest smoke and darkness, converting this into a visible picture enables vision where this is not normally possible.

The camera does not need visible light to operate so the pictures you get are the same whether in light or total darkness. Thermal imaging cameras therefore have many uses, from firefighting, detecting the seat and spread of a fire to survey work, and search and rescue.
4. What should you do if you are called to house whose carbon monoxide detector is alarming?

Answer: Get everyone out, then make sure all windows and doors are closed.

If you are called to a house whose carbon monoxide detector is alarming, you should get everyone out, and then close all the windows and doors, so the detector can give a true reading.
5. A radio attached to the collar is an important item to have when fighting fire.

Answer: True

A radio is one of the most important items that you can have on you. It lets you communicate with the other firefighters in your company, so you will know their whereabouts and so they will know yours. If you cannot call for help, then you are in trouble.
6. What is the first thing you should do when you are called to a vehicle accident that includes entrapment?

Answer: Crib the vehicle

Cribbing the vehicle is very important; use blocks of wood or other materials to stabilize the vehicle.
7. When a helicopter is preparing for landing, what is the first thing that should be done?

Answer: Make sure the area is clear of debris and obstacles

When I served in the United States Navy, we had to do fod walkdowns. Fod means foreign objects and debris. It is very important to remove all foreign matter so it does not get into the engines of the aircraft.
8. If the fire is coming out the front door, which way should you attack the fire?

Answer: From the rear of the structure.

You enter the burning structure from the rear, because you don't want to push the fire throughout the structure. If you attack it through the front door, you could push it to other areas of the building.
9. Can the pump operator leave his engine after it is set up to pump at the desired pressure?

Answer: No

The pump operator must stay with his pumper until the fire is under control, and the I.C. (incident commander) gives the order.
10. What is the first thing you should do at a fire?

Answer: Get orders from the incident commander.

You must always get orders from the I.C. (incident commander). If you don't follow command, someone could get hurt or die. Plus there will be less damage to the structure.
