Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was born June 1, 1801, in Vermont (USA) and, although he was not the first leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his religious fervor and political savvy facilitated the growth of that church exponentially. Who was this pioneer of the American West?

Answer: Brigham Young

Brigham Young served as the leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (which has been known as the Mormon Church and the LDS Church) for more than thirty years. It was during Young's tenure that the non-denominational church established its roots in the Salt Lake Valley of what became a part of the American state of Utah. Brigham Young was given credit for not only the growth and success of his church, but with the expansion of much of the Utah Territory.

He served as the first governor of the Utah Territory. Young has been listed among the founders of both Brigham Young University and University of Utah.
2. If you have watched the eternally popular movie, "The Wizard of Oz", that was released in 1939, you have seen the performer born June 1, 1890, in multiple roles - in only that one movie. Who was the jovial character actor who portrayed The Wizard, Professor Marvel, the Gatekeeper, and others in "The Wizard of Oz"?

Answer: Frank Morgan

In "The Wizard of Oz", Frank Morgan played the Wizard and four other roles. Or, five other roles if you want to include the Wizard's face as it is projected at the end of the hallway; it was Morgan's most intimidating voice that was heard as the Wizard made his surreptitious appearance.

As mentioned in the question, Morgan portrayed Professor Marvel and the Gatekeeper in the movie; his other "Oz" roles were the Coachman and the Doorman. Frank Morgan had worked in silent films for almost 20 years before he was featured in sound films of the 1930s and 1940s. With a wide variety of roles, co-stars, and genres to his credit, his acting career spanned many years, yet he was most often remembered for his involvement in "The Wizard of Oz".
3. He is not someone who resembled Marilyn Monroe - no matter what the comparison - but this actor was born the same day as that beloved movie star. Who was the comedian, singer, film star, and television icon, originally from Mount Airy, North Carolina, who was born on June 1, 1926?

Answer: Andy Griffith

Andy Griffith and Marilyn Monroe - when have you heard those two names in the same sentence? Yet, Andy Griffith does have some things in common with Marilyn. Andy Griffith was very popular during his career. His reputation as a hard-working, salt of the earth, treat everyone with respect congeniality served him well. It seemed Andy was successful at most everything he attempted - comedian, singer, film star, TV star, or political ally.

One of his best known endeavors, of course, was the long running TV sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show", which was shown on American TV between 1960 and 1968. In his book, "Andy and Don: The Making of a Friendship and a Classic American TV Show" (published in 2015), Daniel de Visé described the workplace of that sitcom as this: "Andy Griffith set a festive, frolicsome tone. And he loved to stage practical jokes. ... (the) set (was) like a big ole family picnic, joining his cast-mates in song, dance, laughter and general merriment when the camera was off." If so, it is not wonder why everyone liked him!
4. This singer, actor, personality, and pop star was one of the most admired celebrities of the mid-twentieth century. His chiseled good looks and smooth as honey singing voice were well known and appreciated, but it seemed his unwavering commitment to his moral standards were often his identity as well. Who was the wholesome guy who was born June 1, 1934?

Answer: Pat Boone

Pat Boone was so well liked and his records sales were so competitive that some sources have claimed only Elvis Presley was more popular during the 1950s and early 1960s. During that time period Pat Boone also starred in several successful movies and hosted his own television show. Pat Boone fell in love with his wife, Shirley Boone (nee Foley) when they were both teenagers; the two were married more than 65 years, until her death in 2019.

There was a fetching story about Pat Boone and Shirley Jones, stemming from when they both starred in the movie "April Love" (1957). Apparently, Pat's hesitation to kiss his leading lady (on screen) was parlayed into a rather profitable spin on the movie - did he or did he not kiss Shirley Jones at the end of the movie? Accounts of this scenario were available (even online) for decades after the movie's release.
5. The list of musical acts that have featured this artist include Faces, the Jeff Beck Group, the Creation, the Birds, and the Rolling Stones. He was born in west London (England) on June 1, 1947. Who was the multi-instrumentalist who it seemed never met a guitar he could not play?

Answer: Ron Wood

When Mick Taylor left the universally popular rock band, the Rolling Stones in the mid-1970s, many fans of the band and those in the music industry were shocked. Then the Stones co-founder, Keith Richards, convinced his long-time friend, Ron Wood (aka Ronnie Wood), to join him and be a part of the Rolling Stones. Although it would be several years until the Rolling Stones was Wood's only "gig", the collaboration was a very successful one.

Throughout his adult life Wood had a variety of interests - away from his musical career. He owned thoroughbred race horses. He was recognized as a visual artist for his paintings, drawing and prints. He authored (or, co-authored) books that include an art book titled, "Wood on Canvas: Every Picture Tells a Story" (published in 1998) and an autobiography titled, "Ronnie Wood: Artist" (published in 2017). He was known to be an avid fan of the English Football League team, the West Bromwich Albion F.C.
6. At birth, on June 1, 1953, he was named Richard David Falco, but his adoptive parents changed his name to David Richard Berkowitz while he was still an infant. Before his 25th birthday he had become one of the most notorious serial killers in America's history. Media labeled him "The .44 Caliber Killer"; what was the other oft-used moniker of this New York native?

Answer: The Son of Sam

Call it morbid curiosity or call it informed interest in current events and/or history, but the public has been known to exhibit a fascination about its criminals. Berkowitz fueled this interest by writing taunting letters (or, notes) to law enforcement officials and to the media after he (supposedly) had shot his victims.

In less than eighteen months he had terrorized New York City by killing six people and injuring seven others. Berkowitz called himself "Son of Sam" in the correspondence he penned.

He was also labeled "The .44 Caliber Killer" because the victims who were murdered and the injured who survived their shootings were shot with a .44 caliber Charter Arms pistol.
7. She was a superb athlete who many had thought would be "the" ladies gymnast to watch during 1980 Summer Olympics. Those games were held in the Soviet Union city of Moscow - her native country. She was born June 1, 1960, and, unfortunately, she never achieved those Olympic medals. Who was she?

Answer: Elena Mukhina

Elena Mukhina's story is a saddening account of "what might have been" had she not been injured as she tried to excel at her sport. In the 1978 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Mukhina won the gold medal by performing an amazing program. She was the Soviet hopeful to best their archrivals - the Romanian women's team - at the next summer Olympics. Early in 1979, Mukhina broke her leg.

According to many accounts - and, her own interviews given years later - she was forced to practice and perform before her leg had recuperated. The very next year (1980) while she was participating in a training session and attempting a very controversial (i.e., dangerous) element for her floor exercise she fell and crushed her cervical vertebrae. She went from world class athlete to permanently quadriplegic in that one "snap". Accounts of her attitude, work ethic, performance, determination, and the incident itself differed and blame was placed, but no responsibly was ever shouldered. Physically, mentally, and emotionally she never recovered. Elena Murkhina died in 2006. Reports of her death stated that it was from complications of quadriplegia. She was 46 years old.
8. Not every woman who has become a super-model has been labeled a "successful businesswoman" but both terms certainly apply to the beautiful cover girl who was born near Cologne, West Germany on June 1, 1973. Who was featured on the cover of "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" in 1998?

Answer: Heidi Klum

After Heidi Klum graduated from school in 1992 she accepted a lucrative modeling contract rather than continue with her plans to go to fashion design school. From all appearances, that decision was a sound one. Her list of accomplishments are long and varied.

In addition to her modeling work, she has designed lingerie, consulted on cosmetics products, hosted successful television programs, done voice-over work in movies, and she has worked as producer on different media formats/projects. In 2013 Klum won an Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program" category. Klum became a citizen of the U.S.A. in 2008 but retained her German citizenship at that time, too.
9. It would difficult to pigeonhole the genre of music in which this Grammy Award winner has been most accomplished; descriptions of her music have included pop, rock, alternative country, and folk. She was born June 1, 1981, in a rural area of central Washington state (USA) and began her career in music while singing with her mother before she was ten years old. Who is she?

Answer: Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile has described of her own musical style this way: "I've gone through all sorts of vocal phases, from pop to blues to R&B, but no matter what I do, I just can't get the country and western out of my voice." Carlile was encouraged to expand her musical talent and aspirations by her family from a very young age.

She added her own drive and determination to her formula for her successes. During her career she has collaborated with some of the "Who's Who" in the music - including her self-claimed idol, Elton John.

Her autobiography, titled "Broken Horses: A Memoir", was released in April 2021, and debuted at number one (in non-fiction) on the New York Times Best Seller list.
10. Before he was thirty years old, this guy had already been described as one of the most popular actors of his generation. That may be because he was already a veteran stage actor before the movie "Captain America: Civil War" launched his career as "Spider-Man" in 2016. Who was this English thespian born June 1, 1996?

Answer: Tom Holland

Tom Holland's portrayal of "Spider-Man" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) superhero films garnered him international recognition, lucrative earnings, and a reputation as a bankable movie star during the first half of the 21st century. Early in his career Holland was often described using adjectives such as: poised, professional, confident, personable, and polite.

In spite of his fame, Holland insisted he is a very private person, one who wanted to continue to hone his craft and be recognized for his work rather than elements of his personal life - or, lack thereof.

In late 2021, Holland released a blip that mentioned he would be seen as Fred Astaire in a biopic about that movie icon from the mid-twentieth century. Given Holland's talent as a dancer, that should be a fun film to see.
