After her parents both died in 1917 she was brought up by a local Jewish family and then in 1935 moved to Berlin to study music as a pianist. It was there that she met and married her husband Erich Auer who was a member of the Communist Party of Germany. During the war she looked after the finances of the resistence group's, carried messages as a courier and hid resistence fighters in her apartment.
She was arrested in July 1944 and executed by hanging in Berlin in October 1944.
In her legacy there are a number of streets and public institutions named after her in Germany.
