St John the Evangelist is one of the contenders, along with John the Apostle, for the title of the author of the work often known as "The Book of Revelation" or "The Revelation of St John". Such concepts as "the number of the beast" and "the four horsemen of the Apocalypse" appear in this book.

John Newton was born in 1725, and went to sea with his father when he was eleven. He stayed at sea, often unhappily, for some years and by 1748 he was captain of a slave ship. In that year, he was suddenly converted while steering his ship through a storm. Two years later, he married Mary Catlett, and in 1755 he gave up seafaring and worked at other jobs while continuing his self-education. He became friends with a preacher named George Whitefield and eventually decided to become a minister himself. Many of the hymns he wrote were published in a collection, and he died in 1807.
