Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first MLB player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season?

Answer: Fred Lynn

Two people have accomplished this feat; the first being Fred Lynn in 1975 and then Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. There is some controversy, however, because Ichiro had already played nine full seasons in the Japanese Pacific League. Fred Lynn, a former player at the University of Southern California, was born in Chicago in 1952. He was 23 years old when he won both awards.
2. Which Beatnik-era writer penned the classic poem "Howl"?

Answer: Allen Ginsberg

Although all four of these men were friends and prominent writers on the 1950s beatnik scene, it was the intellectual Ginsberg who wrote this poem. Along with Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," Ginsberg's "Howl," released in 1956, was considered to be one of the most important works of the Beat generation.
3. Which song-writing duo is responsible for such songs as Parker's Band, Third World Man, and Kid Charlemagne?

Answer: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker

All of these song-writing duos met as young men, Fagen and Becker meeting at Bard College in upstate New York. Incidentally, an early bandmate and college friend was future entertainer, Chevy Chase. Though Becker and Fagen wrote numerous songs for other acts before they formed their own band, they recorded all three of the songs under the name, Steely Dan.
4. Which Saturday Night Live cast member was NOT in the much viewed Chippendale's Sketch with Patrick Swayze?

Answer: Adam Sandler

Although Sandler was one of the most popular SNL stars of the early 90s, he did not star in this sketch in which Farley and Swayze compete for the one remaining job as a Chippendale's dancer.
5. Which of these U.S. Presidents served two non-consecutive terms?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Many U.S. Presidents have served two consecutive terms or more (Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to office four times). Grover Cleveland served his first term from 1885-1889, his second term from 1893-1897, with Benjamin serving in between.
6. Which of these 19th century painters spent many productive years in the South Pacific?

Answer: Paul Gauguin

After leaving his life as a successful, married stockbroker with five children, he abandoned his family and in 1891 left Europe for the South Pacific, his first home being in Tahiti. Most of his works that were created here are tropical themed and reflect the lush colors and textures of the South Pacific.
7. Which entertainer is buried on Martha's Vineyard, MA?

Answer: John Belushi

Belushi and his SNL castmate, Dan Aykroyd, along with some other celebrities, found Martha's Vineyard to be a quiet haven from New York City and Hollywood, and as a result, vacationed there. After his passing in 1982, his family decided to have him buried there.
8. Which of the following was NOT one of Jesus' Apostles?

Answer: Luke

Although Luke was one of the four Gospel writers along with Matthew, Mark, and John, he was not one of Jesus' twelve Apostles.
9. Which actor has portrayed characters such as Travis Bickle, Jimmy Doyle, and Paul Vitti?

Answer: Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro starred with both Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino in different films and he and Marlon Brando both portrayed the same character, Vito Corleone, in the Godfather Part I and II. De Niro portrayed Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver," Jimmmy Doyle in "New York, New York," and Paul Vitti in "Analyze This."
10. Which astronomer developed the heliocentric model of the solar system?

Answer: Nicolaus Copernicus

The heliocentric model, proposed by Copernicus, suggests that the Sun is the center of our solar system in contrast to common belief at the time, the geocentric model, in which the Earth is the center.
