Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Like Jacqueline Kennedy, Mary Todd Lincoln had the misfortune of sitting next to her husband at the time that he was assassinated. What happened to Mary?

Answer: Placed in an asylum

Poor Mary had plenty of problems - both before and after the death of her husband. Three of her children died young; her one surviving son, Robert, was the driving force in her institutionalization. (While Mary was an unusual woman, it is uncertain as to whether the placement in an asylum was necessary.)
2. One of the most famous radio broadcasts in the world has a radio announcer being horrified by a disaster that he is witnessing. "Oh, the humanity" is the phrase that is oft repeated. What was the event that Herb Morrison was describing?

Answer: The bursting into flames of the Hindenburg

It should have been a routine story: the Hindenburg was coming in for a presumably routine landing in New Jersey. Something terrible happened, however. Morrison was overcome.
3. Albert Camus was so moved upon witnessing an execution that he later wrote against capital punishment. What form of execution did Camus witness?

Answer: Guillotine

He later wrote an essay entitled "Reflections on the Guillotine".
4. Which author wrote about his experiences and observations of other prisoners while imprisoned in Reading Gaol?

Answer: Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde wrote the epic poem, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" while doing time there.
5. The assassination of Abraham Lincoln: the Lincolns were accompanied to the theatre (and joined in their box) by Major Henry Rathbone and his friend, Clara Harris. What later happened to Rathbone?

Answer: All of these

Rathbone, who was injured in a scuffle with Booth after the assassination, married Harris a short time later. They had several children. Rathbone, however, later went berserk: he killed Harris and spent the remainder of his life in an institution for the "criminally insane". No one will ever know for certain the impact that the shooting of Lincoln had on poor Rathbone.
6. Many books have been written by people who claim to have witnessed the capture, imprisonment or execution of this famous person.

Answer: Amelia Earhart

Some say that Amelia Earhart did not perish when her plane crashed in the Pacific. While some merely speculate as to other possible scenarios, there are those who claim to have personally witnessed either the destruction of her plane, by the Japanese or her execution by the Japanese. No one knows for sure.
7. Which theorist emphasized a child's witnessing of the "primal scene" (sex between the child's parents) as having a profound effect on the psychological development of the child?

Answer: Sigmund Freud

This is classic Freud. Jung's theories are more metaphysical; Skinner and Watson are behaviorists.

While few claim to have witnessed the actual crash, some claim to have witnessed first-hand the wreckage. Which of these people is one of those claimants?

Answer: Jesse Marcel

Marcel was the military officer who was actively involved in the investigation. (The other people mentioned have nothing do with Rosewll or with UFOs.)
9. Many people claim to have seen unusual creatures. Which of these names is NOT one that has been given to these creatures?

Answer: Brobdingnag

"Sasquatch" is a term that has been used by the Indians of North America to describe a "Bigfoot" type of creature. "Abominable Snowman" is a term that has been used to describe a creature in the Himalayas. "Ogopogo" is a term is used to describe a creature of a Loch Ness monster nature.
10. A young girl named Bernadette became internationally famous when she claimed to have been a witness to the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Where did this occur?

Answer: Lourdes

Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79) saw eighteen apparitions in 1858. Among other things, St. Mary said to her, "I do not promise to make you happy in this world but in the next".
