Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the year that Dickens was born in England, the United States was at war with his homeland. What year was it?

Answer: 1812

Charles John Huffam Dickens was born in Portsmouth, the second of eight children. His early years were rife with hardship as his family was constantly burdened with financial troubles.
2. At a young age Dickens was sent to work at a factory. Where was his family for part of this time?

Answer: in a debtors' prison

Dickens was working at Warren's Blacking Factory pasting labels on bottles of boot-blacking when his father, John Dickens, was imprisoned for three months because of unpaid debt. As was frequently the case at that time, his wife chose to accompany him to prison with their children.
3. Dickens' first novel, beginning with "P", brought him instant popular success. What was the title of this 1836 work?

Answer: Pickwick Papers

Dickens was writing in several different genres at this time, the works being serialized in monthly magazines. Coinciding with these early successes was his marriage to Catherine Hogarth.
4. What was the famous pseudonym used by Dickens?

Answer: Boz

Based on his pronunciation as a young child of Moses as "Boses", Dickens adopted the pseudonym "Boz". One of his published works in volume form was "Sketches by Boz", a collection of his earlier writings.
5. "Oliver Twist" was originally published in 1838 in how many volumes?

Answer: 3

Dickens became editor of a London periodical, "Bentley's Miscellany", in 1837 and started serializing "Oliver Twist". The serialization continued even after the full novel was published.
6. What British policies did Dickens vehemently oppose?

Answer: inhumane laws for the poor

Dickens publicly denounced child-labor laws and factory conditions of the times. He called for an end to laws that compelled the poor to go to debtors prisons or workhouses (no doubt an offshoot of his own familial experiences) and lambasted the Tories, who opposed more humane labor laws.
7. What holiday tale was published in 1843?

Answer: "A Christmas Carol"

Read by millions over the years, "A Christmas Carol" is arguably Dickens' most widely known and best beloved work. Amazingly, it took him only a matter of weeks to write.
8. How many children did Dickens and wife Catherine have?

Answer: ten

Prolific in more than just literature it seems. In order, they were: Charles, Mary, Kate, Walter, Francis, Alfred, Sydney, Henry, Dora and Edward.
9. Dickens' death in 1870 left his last novel unfinished. What is the title?

Answer: "The Mystery of Edwin Drood"

In the last years of his life, Dickens embarked on a series of public readings to earn cash. His engagements took him throughout Europe and abroad and each was more exhausting than the last. Dickens was still giving public readings in England as late as 1868 despite his declining health. "Drood" had been serialized (like most of his previous work) and six (of the planned twelve) parts had been published at the time of his death.
10. Where is Charles Dickens buried?

Answer: Westminster Abbey

Charles Dickens is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, despite having at times been regarded as somewhat subversive.
