Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start at the beginning. According to Scripture, what was the name of the first man? (Genesis 2:20)

Answer: Adam

Adam, of course, was the first man. The creation of mankind is told in Genesis 1:26. According to Genesis 2:7, God formed the first man "from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." The name Adam first appears in Genesis 2:20. Scripture states God also created a woman and Adam gave her the name Eve, which translates as "the mother of all living."
2. The first woman to be named in the Old Testament, apart from Eve, has a name which begins with the letter 'A'. Can you name her? (Genesis 4:19)

Answer: Adah

With the exception of Eve, Adah is the first female mentioned by name in the Old Testament. Her name appears in Genesis 4:19, just before the name of another woman, Zillah. The two women were both married to Lamech and Adah was the mother of Jabal and Jubal. Jabal is described in Scripture as "the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock," while Jubal is described as "the father of all those who play the harp and flute."

There is another woman in the Bible with the name Adah. According to Scripture, the other Adah was the daughter of Elon and the wife of Esau.
3. David had two wives with names that both started with the letter 'A'. Can you name them? (1 Samuel 25:1 & 43)

Answer: Ahinoam and Abigail

Ahinoam and Abigail were both wives of David. Abigail is the best known of the two as her "surly and mean" husband Nabal was struck dead by the LORD, according to Scripture. Shortly after Nabal's death, Abigail became David's wife. In 1 Samuel 25:3, she is described as "intelligent and beautiful".

Ahinoam was already David's wife when he married Abigail, according to 1 Samuel 25:43. Ahinoam was from Jezreel. She bore David a son whose name also starts with the letter 'A'. He was called Amnon.
4. David had a treasurer whose name started with the letter 'A'. According to Scripture, the treasurer was famous for his wisdom, however, he made a crucial mistake when he deserted David and joined Absalom during a bloody coup attempt. What's the treasurer's name? (2 Samuel 15:31)

Answer: Ahithophel

The correct answer is Ahithophel. Although he wasn't loyal to David and opted to join forces with Absalom during a bloody coup attempt, Ahithophel's son was Eliam, one of the mighty warriors in David's army. It appears Ahithopel was more of a hindrance than a help for Absalom, however. According to 2 Samuel 15:31, when David learned Ahithophel had joined Absalom's camp, David prayed the "LORD would turn Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness". Ahithophel's advice would prove to be useless and, after Absalom stopped listening to him, Scripture reports that Ahithophel put his house in order and hanged himself.
5. In Genesis 17:5, God announces a name change for Abraham. What was Abraham's old name?

Answer: Abram

Abraham was previously known as Abram. Notes in the New King James Version Study Bible state the name change is "significant" as Abram means 'Exalted Father' and Abraham means 'Father of Many'. According to Genesis 17:1, Abraham was nine-nine years old when the LORD appeared before him and announced his new name. Study notes in the NKJV Bible state this was the fourth time the LORD appeared before Abraham.
6. What son of David attempted to peacefully replace him as king, but was thwarted by Bathsheba who intervened to make sure Solomon would become king? (1 Kings 1:5)

Answer: Adonijah

Adonijah is the correct answer. While David was advanced in years, Adonijah set himself up as king. Bathsheba, David's most famous wife and mother of Solomon, however, thwarted Adonijah's plans and Solomon became king, as per David's wishes all along. According to Scripture, Bathsheba was assisted by Nathan, a prophet of God, in her bid to make Solomon, her oldest son, king.

In 1 Kings 2:25, King Solomon instructs Benaiah to kill Adonijah, and so ends the story of a would-be king.
7. What son of David staged a bloody coup attempt to oust his father and rule as king of Israel? (2 Samuel 15:1)

Answer: Absalom

A bloody civil war erupted when David's son Absalom led a coup. David's forces emerged victoriou, but not before a lot of blood was shed. 2 Samuel 18:7 reports there were no less than 20,000 casualties in a key battle in the forest of Ephraim. Scripture goes on to report about Absalom being killed by Joab and David's forces emerging victorious.

Even though Absalom was prepared to kill David in his bid to become king, Scripture reports David was deeply distressed when Joab killed him in battle. (2 Samuel 18:33)
8. In Psalm 106:16 in the KJV and the NKJV, what man is described as a saint? (The NIV uses different wording.)

Answer: Aaron

In Psalm 106:16, in the KJV and the NKJV, Aaron, the brother of Moses, is called a saint. (The NIV uses different wording, saying Aaron "was consecrated to the LORD."). The verse is part of a passage telling of the Israelites in the wilderness during their exodus out of Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

Moses and Aaron formed a dynamic duo and Scripture reports they were used by the LORD to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. After ten vicious plagues -- everything from the Nile River turning into blood to the deaths of the country's firstborn -- the brothers finally received the Pharaoh's permission to leave Egypt and to head to Canaan.
9. Who was a Judean sheepbreeder who wrote one of the books in the Old Testament that bears his name?

Answer: Amos

Amos describes himself as a sheepbreeder in Amos 1:1 and 7:14 in the NKJV. (In the NIV, the word shepherd is used rather than sheepbreeder.) Amos is the writer of the Old Testament book that bears his name. The Book of Amos is part of the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament and the Twelve Prophet section of the Hebrew Bible.

Amos prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam, king of Israel, as per Amos 1:1. The same verse states he was from Tekoa, a town about five miles southeast of Bethlehem.
10. Abed-Nego was the new name given to a Jewish man by the chief of the eunuchs of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. What was Abed-Nego's original Hebrew name? (Daniel 1:7)

Answer: Azariah

Abed-Nego's original Hebrew name was Azariah. According to Daniel 1:7, he was given the name Abed-Nego by the chief of the eunuchs of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. (In the NIV, his name appears as Abednego.)

Azariah and his compatriots Mishael and Hananiah, were thrown into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow to an image of Nebuchadnezzar. The three men were not harmed by the flames of the furnace, however.

According to Daniel 3:25, when people looked inside the furnace, they saw the three men walking in the midst of fire and not hurt. What's more, the verse in the NKJV states they also saw a fourth form, "like the Son of God".
11. Who, according to Genesis 4:8, was the world's first murder victim?

Answer: Abel

Abel, according to Scripture, was killed by his brother Cain, making him the world's first murder victim. According to Scripture, Cain became extremely jealous when Abel's offerings were seen as more pleasing than his in God's eyes. Cain's jealousy grew into anger and he ended up killing Abel. Details can be found in Genesis 4:1-15.

According to Scripture, Abel was a keeper of sheep while Cain was a tiller of the ground. They are the first documented professions in the Hebrew and Christian Bible.
12. According to 2 Samuel 13, what son of David was guilty of raping his half-sister Tamar?

Answer: Amnon

The account of Amnon, a son of David, raping his half sister Tamar can be found in 2 Samuel 13:1-18. According to Scripture, he was hopelessly in love with Tamar and pretended to be sick in bed and set things up so Tamar served him food. While Tamar was serving him, Amnon forced himself upon her. Amnon was the son of David and Ahinoam while Tamar was the daughter of David and Maacah.

Later, Absalom, a full brother of Tamar, would kill Amnon, as per 2 Samuel 13:19-29.
13. According to Genesis 41:45, what was the name of the daughter of Poti-Pherah, priest of On, who became the wife of Joseph?

Answer: Asenath

The correct answer is Asenath, but not much is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. According to Genesis 46:20, Joseph and Asenath were the parents of Manasseh and Ephraim. At this time, Joseph was the second most powerful man in Egypt, surpassed by only the Pharaoh. As a result, Asenath would have been one of the most influential women in Egypt.

(In the NIV, the name of Joseph's father-in-law is spelled Potipherah.)
14. Out of the four options below, which one was a first cousin of King Saul and the commander of his military? (1 Samuel 14:50-51)

Answer: Abner

Abner was the commander of King Saul's army, as per 1 Samuel 14:50:51. According the two verses, Abner and Saul were first cousins. Kish and Ner were brothers while Kish was the father of Saul and Ner was the father of Abner.

Saul was the first king of Israel, as per 1 Samuel 9:2.

After Saul's death, Israel was engaged in a bloody civil war with one part of the country supporting Saul's son Ishbosheth as king and the other part supporting David. Abner was part of Ishbosheth's forces which were defeated by David. Scripture goes on to tell of David's army commander Joab killing Abner, with David mourning the death.
15. Who was the young and beautiful woman who cared for David when he was elderly and frail? (1 Kings 1:3)

Answer: Abishag

Abishag could very well have been the world's first nurse. In 1 Kings 1:3, she is described as "young" and "beautiful" and was found after an extensive search was conducted for a woman to care for King David who was elderly and frail at the time. According to 1 Kings 1:1, David was "very old" and he "could not keep warm even when they put covers over him."

1 Kings 1:2 tells of David's attendants agreeing to look for a young woman to lie beside David to keep him warm. According to 1 King 1:4, Abishag did what was required of her to keep David warm, but the king did not have sexual relations with her.
16. Who was the notorious thief who stole a number of valuable items in Canaan while the Israelites were preparing to assume possession of the land, with the end result that Joshua and his soldiers experienced bitter defeat at Ai? (Joshua 7)

Answer: Achan

The correct answer is Achan. According to the seventh chapter of Joshua, after Achan stole a large amount of booty in the capture of Jericho, the LORD turned against the Israelites and they were defeated in battle at Ai. The Israelites had invaded Jericho and were attempting to conquer Ai, as they believed that it had been allocated to them as 'The Promised Land.'

In Joshua 7:21, Achan is quoted as telling Joshua he stole "a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels." The theft was in direct contravention of God's instructions to the Israelites prior to their entry into Canaan. After Achan made his confession, his fate was sealed. Scripture goes on to tell of Achan being stoned.
17. What wicked queen of Judah killed her grandchildren to cement her hold on power? (2 Kings 11)

Answer: Athaliah

The sordid story of Queen Athaliah is found in the 11th chapter of 2 Kings as well as the 22nd and 23rd chapters of 2 Chronicles. Being the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Kings 8:18), she came about her evil ways honestly.

When her son Ahaziah died, she was unstoppable in her blood-thirsty mission to have herself installed as queen of Judah. To this end, she killed all Ahaziah's children except Joash, the youngest, as per 2 Kings 11:1-2. (The only reason she didn't kill Joash is the fact that he was placed in hiding.) In other words, she killed her own grandchildren to cement her hold on power.

Athaliah reigned for six years and was killed in an insurrection. 2 Kings 11:20 states "all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm" when the news was announced that Athaliah had been killed with a sword at the palace.
18. Out of the four names below that start with the letter 'A', which one was a son of Jacob? (Genesis 30:13)

Answer: Asher

Asher was Jacob's second son by Zilpah, a handmaiden to Leah. Asher's older brother was Gad. Descendants of Asher became known as the Tribe of Asher. In his final blessings to his twelve sons, Jacob stated Asher's bread would be rich and he would "yield royal dainties," as per Genesis 49:20.
19. Out of the four names below that start with the letter 'A', which one is credited with being the author of Psalm 50, as well as Psalms 73 to 83?

Answer: Asaph

Asaph, a Levite choir leader under David and Solomon, is the correct answer. (1 Chronicles 15:16-19, 16:1-7 and 2 Chronicles 5:6, 12) In 2 Chronicles 29:30, Asaph is also described as a "seer". His name appears as the author of Psalm 50 as well as Psalms 73 to 83. In other words, Asaph is credited with writing twelve Psalms.
20. Out of the four options below, which one is BELIEVED to be a son of Philemon? (Philemon 1:2)

Answer: Archippus

While there is no smoking gun, many theologians believe Archippus was the son of Philemon. In his letter to Philemon, Paul begins by writing "To Philemon, our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house." This has led many people to conclude Apphia was Philemon's wife and Archippus was their son.

In his letter, Paul goes to bat for Onesimus, a slave who had run away from Philemon. After Onesimus ran away from Philemon, who lived in Colosse (which is in present day Turkey), Paul ended up meeting him in Rome, and converted him to Christianity. In his letter, Paul makes a passionate appeal to Onesimus' master to accept him back, not as a slave, but as an equal in Christ.
21. A worker in the early church was deported from Rome because he was a Jew. What was the man's name? (Acts 18:2-3)

Answer: Aquila

Aquila, the husband of Priscilla, is the correct answer. According to Acts 18:2-3, Aquila was ordered to leave Italy by Claudius because he was Jewish. Scripture goes on to tell of Aquila and his wife Priscilla meeting up with the apostle Paul in Corinth. The trio had much in common. In addition to believing in a resurrected Jesus, Aquila, Priscilla and Paul were all tentmakers.

The married couple became key members in the early church, and in Romans 16:3 Paul writes they "risked their necks" for him, but does not provide details.
22. A worker in the early church who has a name starting with the letter 'A' is Apollos. Fittingly, Apollos came from a town which has a name that starts with the letter 'A'. What was the town Apollos came from? (Acts 18:24)

Answer: Alexandria

Apollos came from Alexandria, as per Acts 18:24. The verse, in the NKJV, describes Apollos as "an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures." Scripture goes on to state he met up with Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus and the dynamic husband-wife team tutored him.

I strongly suspect this question was a difficult one for many quiz players. If you were able to come up with the correct answer, congratulations. Every quiz seems to have an extremely difficult question and for this reason, I felt compelled to add this question.
23. Who was the New Testament prophetess who spoke about Jesus "to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem"? (Luke 2:36-38)

Answer: Anna

After Jesus was presented as an infant at the temple by his parents Mary and Joseph, Scripture states Anna "gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem." According to Luke 2:37, she was the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher, and was of "great age" and a widow. Verse 37 also states Anna "did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day."

Anna is mentioned in only the Gospel of Luke and no where else in the Bible.
24. According to Scripture, Peter and Philip, were two members of the original Twelve Disciples who came from Bethsaida. What's the name of the third disciple who came from the same community?

Answer: Andrew

Andrew, of course, is the correct answer. The home of the three disciples is revealed in John 1:44. Bethsaida was a fishing community on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Peter and Andrew were brothers, but Peter played a much more dominant role among the disciples.
25. The apostle Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:14 that a man he identifies as a coppersmith did "a great deal of harm" to him. What's the name of the coppersmith?

Answer: Alexander

Alexander was a coppersmith who was apparently strongly opposed to the Christian message. (In the NIV, Alexander is described as a metalworker.) However, not much is known about him. In 2 Timothy 4:14, Paul simply writes that Alexander the coppersmith "did me much harm" and no further details are given.

There is some speculation it could be the same Alexander that is mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:20. In that verse, Paul tells of Hymenaeus and Alexander being "handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme."
