Bible Names Trivia Questions

1. Lot is a biblical figure mentioned in the book of Genesis and associated with the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. What was his relationship with the patriarch Abraham?

From Quiz
Bible 'L' People

Answer: Lot was Abraham's nephew

Lot is mentioned in the book of Genesis (Bereshit) and is most notable for escaping the destruction of the city of Sodom. He was the son of Haran, brother of Abraham and was from Ur Kaoedim. He travelled with his uncle Abraham and they entered Canaan where the two raised sheep. When they bickered, Abraham allowed Lot to choose which land to graze his flocks on, and Lot eventually wound up in the Sodom area. Lot must have realized that Sodom was not a nice place to live. When he lived there, he was visited by two messengers of God and the mob asked for the two to be turned over to them so that the mob could have their way with the two. Lot instead offered his daughters to the crowd... at this point, the destruction of the city was already assured. Lot eventually was saved from Sodom, but his wife turned back and was transformed into a pillar of salt.

2. The nationality of Ruth is pointed out more than once in Scripture. Out of the four options below, which one is the home country of Ruth?

From Quiz Bible Names Linked with Placenames

Answer: Moab

Moab is the correct answer. On five different occasions, Ruth is described as a Moabitess in the Book of Ruth, using the NKJV. On top of this, on eight different occasions, mention is made events in the book had taken place in the land of Moab. To sum things up, the words 'Moab' and 'Moabitess' appear a total of thirteen times in the Book of Ruth. This even though the book, using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, contains only four chapters. The fact Ruth was a Moabitess is significant. It means she was a Gentile, or non-Jewish. Nevertheless, she ended up marrying Boaz, a Jewish gentleman, and gave birth to Obed, the grandfather of King David. As a result, Ruth's name appears in Matthew 1:5, part of the genealogy of Christ.

3. In the NKJV Bible, as well as the NIV, the first hyphenated name one comes across is Tubal-Cain. In what book would you reckon Tubal-Cain's name is found?

From Quiz Ten Hyphenated Names in the Bible

Answer: Genesis

Genesis is the correct answer. According to Genesis 4:22 in the NKJV, Tubal-Cain was the son of Lamech and Zillah and he was "an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron." The same verse states Tubal-Cain had a sister, Naamah. There is no further mention of Tubal-Cain in Scripture. For the record, his name appears in the KJV without a hyphen.

4. We'll start our quiz about Bible people with similar sounding names by taking a look at Hadar and Hagar. According to Genesis 25:15 in the NKJV, Hadar was a son of Ishamael. Who was Hagar, as per Genesis 16:1?

From Quiz Bible People With Similar Sounding Names -- #7

Answer: A concubine of Abraham and mother of Ishmael

Hagar was a concubine of Abraham and the mother of Ishmael. She was often at loggerheads with Abraham's wife Sarah and eventually Abraham forced her and Ishmael to leave. Genesis 21:14 tells of Abraham taking bread and a skin of water and putting it on Hagar's shoulder and sending the two off into the wilderness of Beersheba. Ishmael is generally regarded as the father of the Arab nation. It should be pointed out in some Bible versions, Hadar is known as Hadad. However, this quiz is based on spellings of names as they appear in the NKJV.

5. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one was a prophet of God and the writer of a major book in the Old Testament?

From Quiz All Answers End with the Letters 'IAH' -- #1

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah, the son of Amoz, is the correct answer. According to Isaiah 1:1, he prophesied in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. He is credited with writing the book of Isaiah, a major book of prophecy in the Old Testament. Christians believe a substantial amount of the content in the book of Isaiah pertains to the coming of Jesus Christ. (An example of this is Isaiah 53.) In fact, Isaiah is the most quoted book in the New Testament. In addition to Isaiah, other major books of prophecy in the Old Testament are Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel.

6. Nohah and Noah are two names that look remarkably similar, but are two different people. According to 1 Chronicles 8:2, Nohah was a son of Benjamin and a grandson of Jacob and Rachel. Who was Noah?

From Quiz Bible People With Similar Sounding Names -- #6

Answer: The builder of the ark

I thought I would start with an easy one. Obviously, Noah was the builder of a gigantic ark in which he and his family took refuge when an enormous flood engulfed the entire world. Joining Noah on the ark was his unnamed wife and their three sons -- Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The unnamed wives of Noah's three sons also took refuge on the ark. According to Scripture, the ark also accommodated a male and a female of every kind of animal and bird. Details about Noah building the ark and the enormous flood engulfing the world can be found in Chapters 6, 7 and 8 of Genesis.

7. Jedidiah and Jedidah are two names from the Old Testament that are remarkably similar. Jedidah was the mother of Josiah, the child who became king of Judah at the tender age of eight years. According to 2 Samuel 12:25, who was Jedidiah?

From Quiz Bible People With Similar Sounding Names -- #5

Answer: A name given by God for Solomon

Jedidiah was the name God told Nathan the prophet to give to Solomon, the son of David and Bathsheba, as per 2 Samuel 12:25. However, for whatever reason, the name never stuck. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Jedidiah means 'Beloved of the LORD'. According to 2 Kings 22:1-2, Jedidah, the mother of Josiah, was the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. Using the NKJV, this is the only instance in which she is mentioned in Scripture.

8. Two names in the Bible easily mixed up are Heman and Haman. Heman was a talented musician in the court of King David and was the father of fourteen sons and three daughters. Who was Haman?

From Quiz Bible People With Similar Sounding Names -- #4

Answer: An evil man who planned to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire

Haman was an evil man who planned to kill all the Jews in the massive Persian empire ruled by Ahasuerus. (In the NIV, Ahausuerus is known as Xerxes.) Haman was unable to carry out his diabolical plan as he was out-maneuvered by Queen Esther and Mordecia. See the book of Esther in the Old Testament for full details. Details about Heman can be found in 1 Chronicles 25:1-6.

9. What infant was found floating in a basket on the Nile River by the daughter of the Pharaoh? (Exodus 2:1-10)
