Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for for the prophet of God who rebuked David. (2 Samuel 12)

Answer: Nathan

The account of Nathan confronting David is found in the twelfth chapter of 2 Samuel. He used a parable to make David aware of the seriousness of his sinning when he had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and then made arrangements for the murder of her husband. Nathan than made the pronouncement that the child who would be born as a result of the adulterous affair would die, and sure enough it came to pass.

Incidentally, it was Nathan who told an elderly and frail David of the plot of Adonijah to become king.

The end result is that Solomon became king, as per 1 Kings 1:8-45.
2. Find the match for the prophet of God who is associated with a valley filled with dry bones.

Answer: Ezekiel

The prophet Ezekiel wrote about a valley filled with dry bones, as per Ezekiel 37:1-14.

According to Scripture, Ezekiel visited the valley while "in the spirit of the LORD". Scripture goes on to state the LORD told Ezekiel to "prophesy to the bones" and eventually they came to life.

Ezekiel 37:7-10, in the NKJV, states: "So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them. Also He said to me, 'Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, 'Thus says the LORD God: 'Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live'.' So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army."

Scripture goes on to state the bones are representative of "the whole house of Israel."
3. Find the match for the prophet of God who is associated with the term "double portion". (2 Kings 2:9-10)

Answer: Elisha

According to Scripture, Elisha requested, and apparently received, a double portion of Elijah's spirit. Elijah was Elisha's mentor.

2 Kings 2:9-10, in the NKJV, tells of Elisha making his request.

"And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?' Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me'."

Scripture goes on to tell of Elijah suddenly being taken up to heaven in a whirlwind and a distraught Elisha taking up Elijah's mantle. According to Verse 14, Elisha struck the waters of the Jordan River and "it was divided this way and that and Elisha crossed over".

Verse 15 goes on to state: "Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, 'The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.' And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him."
4. Find the match for the prophet of God who successfully interpreted a dream for Nebuchadnezzar.

Answer: Daniel

According to Scripture, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that deeply troubled him to the point he was unable to sleep. Making things worse, Nebuchadnezzar could get none of the wise men in his kingdom to tell him what he had dreamed, let alone the meaning of the dream. According to Daniel 2:3-9, Nebuchadnezzar refused to tell the wise men what he had dreamed with the view that if they were indeed wise they could easily tell him what he had dreamed.

In a nutshell, Daniel accurately told the king his dream pertained to an image with a belly and thighs of bronze. The prophet of God accurately interpreted the dream stating it represented the rise of four different kingdoms (Daniel 2:27-45).
5. Find the match for the prophet of God who is associated with an extremely strong windstorm. (1 Kings 19:12)

Answer: Elijah

After experiencing a major windstorm, an earthquake and fire, Scripture says Elijah heard "a still small voice". The voice was that of God giving Elijah divine instructions. One of the instructions was to anoint Elisha as a prophet to replace himself.

Incidentally, the wind in 1 Kings 19:12 is described as being "great" and "strong". It was that and very much more, as Scripture says the wind was so powerful it "tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces". No details are given in Scripture about the intensity of the earthquake and the fire. One can only imagine.
6. Find the match for the prophet of God who wrote the last book in the order the books appear in the Minor Prophet section of the Christian Bible and the Twelve Prophet section of the Hebrew Bible.

Answer: Malachi

Malachi is the correct answer. In addition to being the last book of the Minor Prophets, it's also the last book in the Old Testament of the English Bible.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Malachi means 'My Messenger'. The notes go on to state "the final book of the Old Testament is about the error of forgetting about the love of God."

The books are called Minor Prophets simply because they are shorter than the books of the Major Prophets, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. The books of the Minor Prophets are seen as every bit as important as that of the writings of the Major Prophets.
7. Find the match for the prophet of God who is associated with writing about Immanuel, which means God with us.

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah is the correct answer. As stated in the question, Immanuel means 'God with us'. According to Isaiah 7:14, Immanuel would be born of a virgin, with many Christians believing this is direct reference to the Virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus. Immanuel is also spelled as Emmanuel in some versions of the Bible. The name Immanuel can be found in only Isaiah in the Old Testament and Matthew 1:23 in the New Testament.

According to Isaiah 1:1, Isaiah was the son of Amos and the book was written during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Isaiah was known for speaking God's words to rebuke the people for their evil ways and he was extremely unpopular as a result, according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible.

Many Christians believe Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12 contains a number of prophecies pertaining to Jesus Christ.
8. Find the match for the prophet of God who returned from exile in Babylon.

Answer: Haggai

Haggai was a prophet of God who had returned from exile in Babylon.

"His first task was to force them to see where their hearts and priorities really lay," notes in the NKJV Study Bible state. "He urged them to do what they should have done from the start: to rebuild the temple with a willing heart. To these admonitions, he added the promise of God to be with them. With this promise, the people could return to their first enthusiasm and carry out God's promise for them. Then their worship would be joyful and sincere."
9. Find the match for the prophet of God is associated with harlotry.

Answer: Hosea

Hosea, a prophet of God, was commanded by the LORD to marry Gomer, a harlot. In Hosea, 1:2-3, in the NKJV Bible, God tells Hosea to marry a wife of "harlotry" as an illustration of Israel's infidelity to God. (The KJV uses the word "whoredom" rather than harlotry.)

Meanwhile, Hosea 1:2-3, in the NIV Bible, states: "When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, 'Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD.' So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son."
10. Find the match for the prophet of God who is known as the weeping prophet.

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet.

Some theologians state Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet for his writing in Jeremiah 9:1. The verse in the NKJV states:
"Oh, that my head were waters,
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the daughter of my people!"

However, others state Jeremiah's title of the weeping prophet comes from his authorship of the book of Lamentations in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament.

"The term 'weeping prophet' is so entrenched with Jeremiah that there is even an English word -- jeremiad ('a sad lamentation') -- that enshrines the concept," states the Website Christian Stack Exchange.

Meanwhile, Wikipedia states Jeremiah earned the title the 'weeping prophet' as a result of the difficulties chronicled in the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations.

Wikipedia also states Jeremiah is traditionally credited with writing the books of Kings as well as Jeremiah and Lamentations.
