Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who eat my people's flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?

Answer: Micah

Verse 3 is merely the end of a long sentence. The full quote is "Then I said, 'Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel. Should you not embrace justice, you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones; who eat my people's flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?'" (Micah 3:1-3).

Micah warns the leaders and prophets of Israel against falsehood and against deviating from the path of God and reminds them that the price of failure is utter destruction at the hands of the Lord.
2. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,

Answer: Malachi

The sentence continues into verse 4: "and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years."

This chapter is a messianic prophecy and also parallel themes later seen in revelation - the cleansing or punishing fire ("For he will be like a refiner's fire", Malachi 3:2) as well as the gold that makes up the streets of Jerusalem in Revelation.
3. God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens and his praise filled the earth.

Answer: Habakkuk

The third (and last) chapter of Habakkuk is a prayer to God, but at the same time alludes to the final battle, with God, a "Holy One" (later also referenced as "anointed one") as well as a "leader of the land of wickedness" who is defeated. The events are told in past tense, yet the events are clearly a vision.
4. They cast lots for my people and traded boys for prostitutes; they sold girls for wine to drink.

Answer: Joel

"They", in this passage are the nations that God has assembled in judgement. Among those judged, Tyre, Sidon and Philistia are mentioned by name. Joel 3 also contains an interesting reverse of the famous "swords to plowshares" quote from Isaiah, as verse 10 states "Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears"
5. Then he said to me, "Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.

Answer: Ezekiel

The passage quoted here is from Ezekiel's calling to become a prophet. God feeds Ezekiel a scroll of his Word, so that he would be empowered to properly speak God's Word to the people of Israel. The task, however, comes with a stern warning that many will refuse to listen - and in the words other prophets, we see the consequences.
6. Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses

Answer: Nahum

This passage continues into verse 4: "all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft."

The city singled out for its wickedness and punished by God for it here is Nineveh and in fact the entire short book on Nahum is about the fall of Nineveh.
7. Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.

Answer: Zechariah

In this chapter, Joshua, the high priest of the Israelites, stands before God with Satan and an angel advocating for him. However, it is less about Joshua himself than about God's people, merely represented by the one. The complete chapter foreshadows the forgiving of sins later provided through Jesus Christ.
8. Her officials within her are roaring lions; her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning.

Answer: Zephaniah

Zephaniah also speaks of Jerusalem, but not of the promised kind, the rebuilt and glorious Jerusalem of Revelation, but of a sinful, oppressive city that, while ruled by God, refuses to accept his word. Again, we see a foreshadow of Revelation here in God's own words: "I have decided to assemble the nations, to gather the kingdoms and to pour out my wrath on them- all my fierce anger.

The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger." (Zephaniah 3:8)
9. Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

Answer: Amos

This question needs to be placed in its context to be read correctly. The preceding two verses are: "Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the LORD has spoken against you-against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
'You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.'"

With this question, God, through his prophet, thus reminds Israel that the covenant was not a one-sided divine declaration, but rather a choice made by both God and his chosen people. As such, they need to of course keep their side - and, like many prophesies, the following passages also include the judgements that await those who go astray.
10. The captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.

Answer: Isaiah

Again, this verse is only the end of a sentence. The full quote is "See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water, the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter." (Isaiah 3:1-3)

The passage then goes on to proclaim that God would make children the leaders and that, under their leadership, crime and anarchy would become the norm. Maybe this is one of the reasons that, even today, people are so consistently reluctant to listen to the younger generation, regardless how important their concerns and how good their ideas.
