Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scripture tells of Samson visiting a prostitute who lived in a community with a placename spelled entirely on the left side of your keyboard. What was the name of the city, as per Judges 16:1?

Answer: Gaza

According to Judges 16:1, Samson, a judge of Israel known for his super strength, went to Gaza and visited an unnamed prostitute. When local residents caught wind of his visit, they planned to surround the house and kill him in the morning when he came out. However, Samson surprised them by leaving the prostitute's house at midnight. Scripture states Samson took hold of the doors of the gate of the city as well as the two gateposts and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.

According to the Smith's Bible Dictionary, Gaza was one of the five chief cities of the Philistines in Biblical times.

2. After being stoned in Lystra and left for dead, Scripture tells of Paul recovering and then leaving the next day for a town with a placename spelled entirely on the left side of your keyboard. What was the name of the community, as per Acts 14:20?

Answer: Derbe

Paul was stoned by an infuriated mob and left for dead in Lystra, a city in present day Turkey. After the stoning, Scripture states the disciples gathered around Paul's body and miraculously "he rose up and went into the city." No further details are given about Paul's stoning.

Scripture goes on to tell of Paul and Barnabas departing the next day for Derbe. According to Easton's Bible Dictionary, Derbe was about twenty miles, or about thirty-two kilometres, from Lystra.

3. Jethro was the father-in-law of Moses who came close to having a QWERTYUUIOP name. In other words, his second name can be almost completely spelled by using only the top line of letters on your keyboard. What was Jethro's second name? (Exodus 2:18)

Answer: Reuel

Jethro was also known as Reuel, as per Exodus 2:18. However, in various other verses (including Exodus 3:1, 4:18, 18:1, 18:5 and 18:12) he is known as Jethro.

Jethro/Reuel was a priest of Midian and the father of seven daughters, as per Exodus 2:16. One of the daughters was Zipporah, who became the wife of Moses.

4. What prophet of God was in the midst of confessing his sins when he was visited by the angel Gabriel?

Answer: Daniel

Daniel is the correct answer. In Daniel 9:20, Daniel states he was "confessing my sin and the sin of my people" when Gabriel appeared in his midst. Details of Gabriel's message to Daniel appear in Verses 24 to 27. There have been different interpretations of his message. However, the general theme is the people of Israel have a set amount of time "to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy."

5. After seeing a vision of God on a throne, who confessed his sin as well as the sin of the Israelite nation?

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah 6:1-5 tells of Isaiah seeing the LORD "sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple." In Verse 5, Isaiah issues a confession: "Woe is me, for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

Scripture goes on to tell of Isaiah receiving instructions to be a prophet to the people.

6. According to Exodus 10:16, who confessed to Moses and Aaron that he had sinned against God and against the two of them?

Answer: The Pharaoh

Exodus 10:16 tells of the Pharaoh confessing to Moses and Aaron he had sinned against God as well as the two of them. The confession was made after the plague of locusts, the eighth of ten plagues, had been unleashed on Egypt by God.

After the Pharaoh's confession, Scripture states the LORD created "a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them into the Red Sea" with not one locust to be found in Egypt.

However, after the locusts were removed from Egypt, the Pharaoh reverted to his old ways and denied permission for the Israelites to leave Egypt.

Scripture goes on to tell of two more plagues being unleashed on Egypt -- the plague of darkness and the deaths of the firstborn. It was only after the deaths of the firstborn that the Israelites were able to leave Egypt and journey to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

7. According to Genesis 38:26, what was the name of the pregnant woman who had been designated to be burned, but was saved when her father-in-law Judah made a dramatic confession he was guilty of sexual immorality?

Answer: Tamar

Tamar ended up being impregnated by her father-in-law Judah when she posed as a prostitute. Tamar's head was covered during the intimacy and Judah didn't realize the 'prostitute' was actually his daughter-in-law.

About three months later, when Tamar was pregnant, an outraged Judah demanded she be brought out and be burned. However, Judah had a dramatic change of heart when Tamar proved he was the man who had impregnated her!

In his confession, Judah admitted, "She has been more righteous than I."

Scripture goes on to tell of Tamar giving birth to twins -- Perez and Zerah. This is the second set of documented twins in Scripture with Jacob and Esau being the first.

See Genesis 38:1-30 for details.

8. According to Joshua 24:33, when Eleazar, the son of Aaron, died he was buried in a hill belonging to his son. Who was his son?

Answer: Phinehas

Joshua 24:33 tells of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, dying and being buried in a hill belonging to his son Phinehas. The verse states the land was in the mountains of Ephraim and had been given to him.

Eleazar and his brother Ithamar served as priests for the Israelites as they journeyed from Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. Phinehas is perhaps best known for taking a javelin and killing an Israelite man and a Midianite woman in one blow. According to Numbers 25:1-18, the men of Israel were being led astray from their devotion to God by the Midianite women.

9. According to Genesis 23:14, what was the name of the man who sold land to Abraham to bury Sarah?

Answer: Ephron

Details about Ephron selling land to Abraham to use for burial purposes can be found in Genesis 23:14-20. According to the passage, Abraham paid four hundred shekels of silver for the property that was used to bury his wife Sarah. The passage states the field was in Machpelah, before Mamre, and contained a cave. Later Abraham would be buried at the site along with Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and Jacob and his wife Leah, as per Genesis 49:31. According to Genesis 35:19, Jacob's other wife Rachel was buried near Bethlehem.

10. According to Joshua 15:16-19, what daughter of Caleb owned property as well as two springs of water?

Answer: Achsah

Achsah was the daughter of Caleb who owned property as well as two springs of water. With much of the Middle East enduring a parched and dry weather, the two springs of water would've been extremely valuable in Biblical times.

Some more fascinating trivia about Achsah. In Joshua 15:16, Caleb is quoted as saying who ever attacked Kirjath Sepher and gained control of the town, he would give his daughter Achsah as wife. According to Verse 17, the town was conquered by Othniel, the son of Kenaz, and Achsah became his wife. Scripture states Kenaz was Caleb's brother.
