Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To avoid being killed, Abram requested his wife Sari tell the people in the foreign land where they were living that he was actually her brother (Genesis 12:13). The same ruse was played by another husband-and-wife team for the same reason. What's the name of second bogus brother-sister team? (Genesis 26:7)

Answer: Isaac and Rebekah

The correct answer is Isaac and Rebekah. They basically pulled off the same ruse as that of Abram and Sari, who would later become Abraham and Sarah. Scripture states Isaac and Rebekah were in Gerar due to a famine -- the same reason Abram and Sari moved to Egypt. Genesis 26:7, in the NIV Bible, states: "When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, 'She is my sister,' because he was afraid to say, 'She is my wife.' He thought, 'The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.'"
2. In Genesis 41:45, the Pharaoh of Egypt gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. What was the name of Joseph's wife?

Answer: Asenath

The woman's name was Asenath. Genesis 41:50 states Asenath bore two sons "before the years of famine came". The names of the sons were Manasseh and Ephraim. Genesis 41:51-52, in the NIV Bible, states: "Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, 'It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household.' The second son he named Ephraim and said, 'It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.'"
3. According to 1 Samuel 18:27, David was given Saul's daughter as his first wife after he slew 200 Philistines and presented the foreskins to the king. What was the woman's name?

Answer: Michal

Michal is the correct answer. It's a long story, but Saul, the father of Michal, ordered David to produce the foreskins from 100 Philistines to win his daughter's hand as he firmly believed David would be killed in the process and he would no longer have to contend with him. David, however, killed twice as many Palestinians and easily won Michal's hand, much to the consternation of Saul.
4. Solomon, after becoming king, formed an alliance with the Pharaoh of Egypt and married one of his daughters.

Answer: True

Yes, Solomon married the Pharaoh's daughter and made an alliance with Egypt. 1 Kings 3:1 states: "Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the LORD, and the wall around Jerusalem." The woman's name is not given, however. Notes in the NIV Study Bible state: "It appears likely Solomon established his marriage alliance with either Siamun or Psusennes II, the last kings of the 21st Egyptian dynasty (the first Egyptian pharaoh mentioned by name in the OT is Shishak -- 1 Kings 11:40; 14:25-26 -- who established the 22nd Egyptian dynasty c. 945 B.C.)" The notes go on to state: "Such an alliance attests Egyptian recognition of the growing importance and strength of the Israelite state. 1 Kings 9:16 indicates that the pharaoh gave his daughter the Canaanite town of Gezer as her dowry at the time of her marriage to Solomon."
5. Deborah was a prophetess and Judge of Israel. What was the name of her husband, according to Judges 4:4?

Answer: Lappidoth

Lappidoth's name appears only once in Scripture. Incidentally, notes in the NIV Study Bible indicate Deborah was the only judge referred to as a prophetess. And according to Wikipedia, she was the "fourth, and the only female, Judge of pre-monarchic Israel in the Old Testament (Tanakh)."
6. According to Scripture, Jezebel was an evil influence over the throne of her husband, the king. What was the name of her husband? (1 Kings 21:4-5)

Answer: Ahab

The correct answer is Ahab. Due to her evil ways, Jezebel has come to symbolize evil women, according to Wikipedia. Jezebel is regarded as a villain in the Old Testament because she played a pivotal role in convincing her husband Ahab to stop worshiping God and to start worshiping Baal. (See 1 Kings 21:25.) She also had a number of prophets killed, as per 1 Kings 18:4.
7. Hosea, one of the Minor Prophets, was instructed by God to marry an "adulterous wife," or a harlot in the KJV. What was her name?

Answer: Gomer

The correct answer is Gomer. In Hosea, 1:2-3, in the KJV Bible, God tells Hosea to marry a wife of "whoredom" as an illustration of Israel's infidelity to God. Hosea 1:2-3, in the NIV Bible, states: "When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, 'Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD.' So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son."
8. Scripture states Mary was a virgin who gave birth to Jesus, and after she became pregnant she married Joseph, a carpenter. An angel of the Lord appeared to both Mary and Joseph about the virgin birth, but it was only Joseph who was told the baby should be named Jesus.

Answer: False

False. Both Mary and Joseph were told separately the baby was to be named Jesus. Mary was given her message about the baby's name in Luke 1: 31. Meanwhile, Matthew 1: 20 states an angel of the Lord appeared before Joseph and gave him instructions the baby should be called Jesus. Scripture in the NIV Bible quotes the angel as saying: "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
9. What are the names of the parents of John the Baptist?

Answer: Zechariah and Elizabeth

The parents of John the Baptist were Zechariah and Elizabeth. Their story is told in Luke 1:5-25. Incidentally, when Gabriel, an angel of the Lord, told Zechariah his wife Elizabeth would bear a son, he responded by saying such an event was unlikely to happen because he was an "old man and his wife was well along in years." Gabriel told Zechariah because of his unbelief, he would not be able to talk until the baby's birth. According to Scripture, from that moment, Zechariah was unable to speak. Luke 1:62-64, in the NIV Bible, tells of Zechariah regaining the ability to speak after John was born: "Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.

He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, 'His name is John.' Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God."
10. The father of John and James was Zebedee and theologians believe the mother's name was Salome. What unusual request did the mother make of Jesus?

Answer: Wanted her two sons to sit at Jesus' right and left side in his kingdom.

The mother wanted Jesus to grant permission to her sons to sit at his right and left side in glory. The request went over like a lead balloon with the 10 other disciples. Matthew 20:24-28, in the NIV Bible, states: "When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many'."
