Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The last section of Isaiah 32 is titled "The Peace of God's Reign". In the future mentioned here, in what type of habitation will the people dwell?

Answer: Peaceful

Isaiah 32:18 reads, "My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places". This is one of the gifts that would come with the pouring out of the Spirit mentioned in verse 15 ("Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high...") There are several benefits brought with the Spirit, including: fruitfulness (v. 15), justice (v. 16), righteousness (v. 16), and peace (v. 18).
2. According to Proverbs 3:33, what does the Lord do to the home of the just?

Answer: Blesses it

Proverbs 3:33 reads, "The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the just". This verse is taken from a section of Proverbs that is titled "Guidance for the Young", which is written as a father addressing his son. Parallelism is a common feature of Hebrew literature, and this verse is an excellent example of the use of antithetical parallelism which pairs two contrasting ideas.
3. Which word fills in the blank for the following verse: "Through _____ a house is built, and by understanding it is established"? (Proverbs 24:3)

Answer: Wisdom

This verse is coupled with verse 4: "Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches". (Proverbs 24:3-4) Verses 1 and 2 speak of not envying evil men, and, according to the Study Bible for Women (NKJV), the house mentioned here is a metaphor for someone's life.

It defines wisdom here as "the fear of the Lord", and understanding as "the discernment to apply wise principles in everyday life".
4. Often found on home decorations is the phrase "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord". This is a part of a much longer verse found in which book of the Bible?

Answer: Joshua

This phrase ends the verse, Joshua 24:15: "And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".

After giving his farewell address, Joshua calls the people to Shechem and speaks to them with a message from God. He begins with a history of what they have been through before addressing the issue of serving only God and rejecting the idols of the other nations.

This verse ends his speech.
5. In 2 Corinthians 5:1, Paul mentions what happens "if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed". According to this verse, what type of building do we have from God?

Answer: A house not made with hands

The last verse of 2 Corinthians 4 ends with the line, "For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are unseen are eternal". (v. 18) He then begins 2 Corinthians 5 with, "For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens". According to the Study Bible for Women, the house mentioned here is our body.

The physical body is temporary, but God has an eternal home for us after death.
6. According to Luke 10:5, what should you say upon entering someone's house?

Answer: Peace to this house.

The verse reads, "But whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house'." This is part of the instructions given by Jesus to the seventy people that he sent out in pairs of two to enter the cities he was going to visit. There are other Biblical references to people blessing houses with peace.

In 1 Samuel, David sends several young men to greet Nabal. In 1 Samuel 25:6, he says, "And thus you shall say to him who lives in prosperity: 'Peace be to you, peace to your house, and peace to all that you have!'."
7. According to Proverbs 15:6, what is there much of in the house of the righteous?

Answer: Treasure

This verse is another example of antithetical parallelism, and the full verse reads, "In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but in the revenue of the wicked is trouble". While treasure may seem to refer to riches and monetary wealth, the verse is actually relaying one of the principles that Proverbs teaches: it is better to be righteous and have integrity, than to be dishonest and wicked. Those who uphold righteousness will be better off than those who do not.
8. Proverbs 31:27 says, "She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness". This is just one verse in a long description of which type of woman, which begins in verse 10?

Answer: A virtuous wife

Proverbs 31 is King Lemuel's account of the words he was taught by his mother. Some scholars believe that King Lemuel may be a reference to Solomon, but other possibilities are that he is symbolic of what an ideal king would be like, or he could be a reference to some other king. Proverbs 31:10 begins the description of a virtuous wife with, "Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies".

The NKJV describes this wife as virtuous, but other translations use words like noble, excellent, capable, and worthy.
9. Which word completes the following verse: "Unless the _____ builds the house, they labor in vain who build it". (Psalm 127:1)

Answer: Lord

The full verse reads, "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain". The message being relayed here is that we must rely on the Lord. Human effort alone is not enough without God's blessing. This psalm is the only one of the Songs of Ascents that is tied to Solomon.
10. In Mark 12, there is a section titled "Beware of the Scribes". Here, Jesus gives some warnings about the scribes' behavior. According to verse 40, the scribes devour the houses of which of the following?

Answer: Widows

Mark 12:38-40 says, "Then He said to them in His teaching: 'Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers.

These will receive greater condemnation'." This passage is criticizing the behavior of some of the church leaders who were supposed to be servants of God. Instead, they would take advantage of the people and demand special treatment.
