Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does the name "Daniel" translate from the Hebrew into the English language?

Answer: God Is My Judge

The name Daniye'l or Dani'el means "God Is My Judge" when translated into English; Dan meaning "to judge" and El meaning "God.

Daniel was around sixteen years old when his nation was taken into Babylonian captivity, and most of his life was spent as a captive during that 70-year time-frame.
2. After Daniel was taken captive along with many others of Israel, he was given a new Babylonian name which meant something like "Bel Protect His Life". Bel was a Babylonian god and thus this name was meant by his captors to honor that particular deity. What was the name that Daniel became known by in Babylon?

Answer: Belteshazzar

In the book of Jeremiah the prophet (who was a contemporary of Daniel and was also carried in captivity) in chapter 51 verse 44, he stated God's warning of the fate awaiting the deity, Bel, of the Babylonians.

"And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together anymore unto him: yea the wall of Babylon shall fall."
3. What was the name of the Babylonian king that overthrew Jerusalem and led the people of Israel into captivity?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar

Nebuchadnezzar, also at times in the Bible referred to as Nebuchadrezzar, was the king of Babylon for a time, after having overthrown the Assyrian Empire and its capital of Nineveh in 612 B.C. Later, his kingdom was divided among the Medes and Persian empires.

Daniel's prophecies and ministry was directed at Nebuchadnezzar and his son, Belshazzar; and later at the Medes/Persian rulers Darius the Mede and Cyrus the Persian, as well as addressing and encouraging his fellow Jewish people who were in exile with him.
4. Which of the following ancient cultures were most likely to have NOT been addressed in Daniel's prophetic works?

Answer: Chinese

Throughout the book of Daniel, one can see the prophecies that concerned the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Chaldeans and the Persians.
Nowhere is the Chinese culture alluded to that I can determine, based on the Biblical account of Daniel.
5. Once Daniel prayed to God but the answer was delayed due to what reason?

Answer: An evil spirit delayed the answer getting to Daniel

According to the Daniel 10:13, a heavenly messenger angel stated that "But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days (21 days or 3 weeks), but lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia."

In Biblical terms, an angelic being with great powers is often referred to as a "prince". Lucifer himself is sometimes called "the prince of the power of the air". This "prince of Persia" was likely a strong angelic being opposed to the works of God, leading one to the conclusion that it was one of the demonic angels who had been cast from heaven with Lucifer.
6. At one time Daniel found himself in a world of deep problems after the king of the Medes had issued a decree that no one could seek advice from anyone other than himself. When Daniel was caught praying to God as usual near his window three times a day, what ranking did he have in the government of Darius?

Answer: President

According to Daniel 6, Daniel was a president, over two other presidents and many princes. Some of these grew jealous of Daniel's high placement in the government and devised a scheme to get rid of him once and for all. They convinced Darius to foolishly sign a document that forbade anyone in the kingdom from petitioning anyone but the king in any matter.

Daniel continued his common practice of praying in front of his window; the king was alerted to this fact, and since he could not retract his own word was forced to throw Daniel into the den of lions. When the worried king appeared at the mouth of the pit after a sleepless night, Daniel assured him that he was fine because God had sealed up the mouths of the lions and the king had him removed. He then ordered the manipulators, their wives and their children to be thrown in to the lions, and they were all devoured and destroyed as they fell to the bottom of the pit.
For the whole story, read Daniel 6.
7. Daniel had a vision in the first year of the reign of Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar's son. In what he called a "night vision", Daniel saw four beasts that represented powers beyond his full comprehension and later two beings that seemed to represent God and the Son of man, Jesus. In what manner did Daniel refer to God in this vision? (Daniel 7:9 - King James Version)

Answer: the Ancient of days

After Daniel's vision of the four beasts, one like a lion with eagle's wings; one like a bear eating on prey; one like a leopard with four heads and four wings of a bird; and the last such a horrible beast that he could only state that it was different from the rest, but that it had ten horns, Daniel then spoke of the Ancient of days who wore pure white garments, had hair as white as snow, sitting on a throne of flaming fire with wheels that were also aflame.

He then bespoke of the "Son of man" who came near to the Ancient of days and received authority over all the earth and was given a kingdom that could not be destroyed. (Daniel 7)
8. In another vision, Daniel saw a ram with two horns and he also saw a male goat. This was recorded in Daniel chapter 8, but when the dream was interpreted later in the chapter, what did Daniel say that the angel Gabriel told him that these animals represented?

Answer: three kings

In Daniel 8, Gabriel explained Daniel's vision after he had asked for its interpretation. He told Daniel that the ram with two horns were indicative of the Medes/Persian empires and thus represented the kings of each nation. The male goat represented the king of Greece.

After Daniel received the full message from the angel Gabriel, he became physically ill for a time, according to the 27th verse, but he recovered and began to take care of the king's business again.
9. Many folks are familiar with the concept of "seeing the handwriting on the wall". This is actually found in Daniel, chapter 5. King Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar's son and successor to the throne of Babylon, actually watched as a disembodied hand wrote on the wall of the palace. What were the words that he saw being written there?

Answer: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin

Daniel was brought in to interpret the meaning of the handwriting that had appeared on the wall of the palace. In Daniel 5:26-28, Daniel explained it this way, in the King James Version:

"This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES: Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians."

This came about as a result of Belshazzar's defilement of Jewish holy vessels that had been removed from Jerusalem after his father had sacked it and taken those items along with the Jewish captives to Babylon.

Immediately after the interpretation, Daniel was placed as the third ruler of the kingdom for his accurate assessment of the situation and Belshazzar was killed that very night, thus fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel. Darius the Mede took over the kingdom at that juncture.
10. Daniel prophesied about the resurrection of the dead, as a future event.

Answer: True

In Daniel 12:1-2, Michael the archangel (God's leader of his warrior angels that fight against evil) is mentioned just prior to the account of Daniel's reference to the resurrection of the dead. We read the following excerpt taken from the King James Version:

"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."

This prophecy may be seen to correlate closely to that of John in the New Testament book of Revelation when he speaks of "great tribulation", (Rev. 7:14) as well as in Paul's letter to the early church of Thessalonica, Greece. In 1st Thessalonians 4:17, Paul also describes the future resurrection of the dead.
