Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ezekiel's name in Hebrew means "God will strengthen". According to Ezekiel 1 (KJV), where was he when God called him to be a prophet, giving him visions of four winged creatures?

Answer: He was a captive in Babylon.

In the opening verse (Ezekiel 1:1, KJV), Ezekiel gave the date and the location of his captivity in Babylon. He was sitting beside the exiles at the Kebar River when he saw visions of God.

In Ezekiel's first vision, four winged creatures came out of the sky with four faces. Their faces included the face of a human being, the face of a lion, the face of an ox and the face of an eagle. Beside each creature was a wheel that sparkled like precious gemstones. When the wheels moved, the creatures moved also.

Ezekiel stood by in awe, until the heavens opened and revealed a man sitting on a throne surrounded with rainbows. Ezekiel fell flat on his face when he realized it was the Lord. The Lord began to speak to him.
2. Throughout the book of Ezekiel, God addressed him by a title when He gave him a vision or mission. What phrase did God use to address Ezekiel when He told Ezekiel to prophesy (Ezekiel 2, KJV)?

Answer: "son of man"

"And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee. And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me." (Ezekiel 2:1-2, KJV)

God would use this phrase throughout Ezekiel's life when He would give him visions and words to prophesy to the Jewish people. Ezekiel became known as a prophet that gave visual demonstrations or illustrations for most of the messages God gave him.
3. What special role did God compare Ezekiel to in Ezekiel 3:17 (KJV), that was similar to a protector of a city?

Answer: a watchman

God compared Ezekiel to a watchman, and told him the people would be delivered if they heard and obeyed His word. A watchman would stand on the walls of the city and if any enemy or danger came during the night or day, he would cry out to alert the armies or tell the people to escape. Without the watchman, the city would have little warning to defend or save themselves. If no one heard the cry, the watchman would fight alone and sacrifice his own life. (Ezekiel 3:17, KJV)
4. What physical ability did God take away from Ezekiel in Ezekiel 3:26 (KJV), because Judah was a rebellious house and would not listen?

Answer: speech

God took away Ezekiel's ability to speak, unless he was prophesying, because the Jews would not listen to the prophecies God gave. Ezekiel was mute as a sign that when he spoke it was God speaking through him. (Ezekiel 3:26-27, KJV)

Eventually God would give him back his speech in Ezekiel 24:25-27(KJV) as a sign of restoring His communication with Israel.
5. In one of Ezekiel's first prophecies, God tried to warn the Jews of their rebellion and the upcoming destruction. According to Ezekiel 4:3 (KJV), what did Ezekiel publicly do for 430 days?

Answer: He laid on his side next to an iron pan.

God spake to Ezekiel to make a tile portraying the city Jerusalem and an iron pan to show how the city of Jerusalem would be attacked. (Ezekiel 4:1-3, KJV)
Ezekiel was instructed to lay on his left side for 390 days as a sign of the iniquity of Israel, and then on his right side for the iniquity of Judah. Each day was for a year of iniquity for each country. Ezekiel was also instructed to eat minimal food as a sign of famine.
6. God told Ezekiel to shave his head and beard. According to Ezekiel 5 (KJV), how did God tell him to destroy the three sections of his hair, as signs of three kinds of destruction?

Answer: burning, cutting with a knife, throwing it into to the wind

Ezekiel was instructed to shave his hair and beard (Ezekiel 5:1-4). God told him to burn a third with fire, cut a third with a knife, and throw the last part to the wind, as signs of the different destruction that would come to Israel.

The first section of hair was burned to show the significance of Jerusalem being burned by enemies. The second section was cut with a knife to show how many of the Israelites would be slain by the sword. The rest of the hair was scattered, because Israel would be taken into captivity and scattered among many nations. (Ezekiel 5:1-4, KJV)
7. During the time of his prophesying, someone Ezekiel loved passed away. Over which female family member did God tell him not to grieve, as a sign to Israel in Ezekiel 24:15-24, KJV?

Answer: His wife

When the people came to Ezekiel and asked why he did not grieve over someone he loved so dear, Ezekiel told them God had spoken to him and told him that he was not allowed to. It was a sign to the Israelites that they would have no time to grieve when God destroyed the city and their own relatives when they would be slain by the sword.

Instead of burying their loved ones, they would be taken into captivity. (Ezekiel 24:15-24, KJV)
8. In Ezekiel 25 through 33, God revealed his plans to punish nations because of their evil. Which nations did Ezekiel prophesy against?

Answer: Egypt, Tyre and Sidon, and countries near Judah

Although God gave judgment to Israel and Judah, God did not forget what other nations had done to His people.

God spoke against the countries near Judah in Ezekiel 25:1-17, Tyre and Sidon in Ezekiel 26:1-28:24, and Egypt in Ezekiel 29:1-33:20.
9. Although God promised to judge His people, He promised to restore them when it was over. What miracle did God do in Ezekiel 37:1-14 (KJV), when He told Ezekiel to prophesy to a valley of dry bones?

Answer: God restored the skeletons, bodies, and breath of the dead army using winds.

God transported Ezekiel to a valley of dry bones and asked him if these bones could live. Ezekiel was careful to answer and said only God knew.

In response God told Ezekiel to tell the bones that they would live. Ezekiel prophesied that God would put muscles, tissues, and skin back on them. As he did as he was commanded, he was awestruck when the bodies came together and flesh came upon them. However there was no breath in the bodies. Ezekiel followed God's further instructions to prophesy to the four winds. Winds came and gave breath to the bodies.

God showed Ezekiel that these bones were similar to the house of Israel. Israel had given up hope that God cared because of all the destruction they faced. However God promised to restore them like He did for the valley of bones. He promised to bring them back from captivity and into their land again.(Ezekiel 37:1-14, KJV)
10. God prophesied to Ezekiel that Israel would return to their homeland, but also gave Ezekiel a prophesy of a heavenly kingdom. In Ezekiel 40-48, what structures does God show Ezekiel?

Answer: a new temple and a city with 12 gates

After the city of Jerusalem was destroyed, God spoke to Ezekiel with a man and a measuring rod (Ezekiel 40:1-4, KJV). He revealed to Ezekiel the plans for a new temple and a city with 12 gates. Ezekiel records in the last verse of the book, Ezekiel 48:35, that the city had 18,000 measures and the name of the Lord was upon it. In the new city God would never leave His people.
