Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness- ... To Titus, my true son in our common faith:..." (Titus 1:1,4 New International Version) After Paul's greeting to Titus, why did he tell Titus he had left him in Crete?

Answer: To finish Paul's work and appoint elders

"The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you." (Titus 1:5 NIV)

Titus, like Timothy and Silas, was one of Paul's special, handpicked disciples that he set over the churches he started. To Paul, who was not married, they were like sons, and he was diligent in instructing them on how they were to carry out their duties. His very personal and wise counsel still serves to instruct those who pastor churches today.
2. Which of the following did Paul use to describe the character qualities of the Cretans, according to the New International Version?

Answer: All of these

"Even one of their own prophets has said, 'Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.' This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith" (Titus 1:12-13).

Paul's letters to the churches he oversaw were usually warm and encouraging but concerning the Cretan churches he seemed to find nothing to admire or praise.
3. According to the New International Version, why did Paul tell Titus that those who are set in leadership over the churches must be blameless?

Answer: Because they are entrusted with God's work

"Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless-not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it." (Titus 1:7-9)

While any of the above answers could be good answers, Paul's most important reason for leaders to be blameless was because they had a sacred trust to carry out God's work among the people they served.
4. Paul's usual instruction for the women in the church was that they should be quiet and be submissive to their husbands. In the New International Version, what did Paul tell Titus the older women in Crete should do?

Answer: Train the younger women

"Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God." (Titus 2:3-5)

Paul expands on his usual instruction for women by defining the conduct that should be taught to them and the areas of ministry where they should serve.
5. Paul told Titus that the Cretans were to live godly, upright lives because they were waiting for the blessed hope. In the New International Version, what did he say the blessed hope was?

Answer: "The glorious appearing of Christ"

"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope -- the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good."
(Titus 2:11-14,NIV)

The first century Christian had a vibrant expectation of Christ's return for his church at any time. Many Christians today believe Christ's return is more imminent than ever.
6. What did Paul tell Titus to teach the Cretans about secular authorities ruling over them, in the New International Version?

Answer: They should be subject to them

"Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men." (Titus 3:1-2)

This teaching was consistent with all New Testament teaching on submitting to those in authority. Even when facing great persecution and even death because of their faith, Christians were to be faithful to God while showing respect to those in authority over them.
7. "At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. (Titus 3:3, New International Version) How did Paul say they had been saved from all these evil things?

Answer: "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared"

"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:4-7)

Paul taught that true change came through the inner working of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life.
8. How many times did Paul tell Titus to warn a divisive person, according to the New International Version?

Answer: Two times

"Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned." (Titus 3:10-11)

Unity of purpose was very important to maintain a clear and consistent witness to the love of Christ in the early Christian community. Paul, therefore, was very strong in dealing with anyone who was causing division in the churches.
9. Where did Paul tell Titus he had decided to spend the winter?

Answer: Nicopolis

"As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there." (Titus 3:12, NIV)

Paul showed great affection for those he discipled and it seems Titus was especially close to him. Paul began his letter by calling him his true son in faith and finished by asking Titus to come to him when his replacements came.
10. "Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live _________ lives." (Titus 3:14, NIV) According to the New International Version, what word is missing in Paul's final instructions to Titus?

Answer: unproductive

Paul's letters could be deeply spiritual but they were also very practical. He always insisted that believers should work and provide for their needs, care for their families and be good citizens.
