Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Obadiah: How many chapters are in the book of Obadiah?

Answer: 1

That one chapter is God speaking to Obadiah about the Edomites. This can be found in verse 1. Obadiah was in charge of the palace in Samaria during the reign of Ahab and Jezebel. While Jezebel was killing the Lord's prophets, he was hiding them in caves and was supplying them with food and water. Obadiah was responsible for the meeting between Ahab and Elijah at Mount Carmel. We learn this in 1 Kings 18:1-19.
2. Jonah: Who was Jonah's father?

Answer: Amittai

This bit of info can be found in chapter 1 verse 1. Jonah, son of Amittai, was given a quest to go tell the people of Nineveh to change their ways or they would be destroyed. He didn't want to warn the Ninevites so he boarded a ship to Tarshish to flee from God.

While on the ship, there was a storm. He confessed his plans to the crew, they threw him overboard, and the storm ceased. Then Jonah was eaten by a whale and was in the whale's stomach for three days and nights, after which God had the whale throw Jonah up on the shore. Jonah finally gave in and warned the people of Nineveh.

The Ninevites changed their ways and were spared.
3. Micah: The words of the Lord came to Micah during the time of what king(s)?

Answer: Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah

"The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. The vision he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem." - Micah 1:1

Who was Jotham? "In the second year of Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years." - 2 Kings 15:32-33. When Jotham died his son Ahaz succeeded him as king.

What about Ahaz? "In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign. Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years." - 2 Kings 16:1-2. When Ahaz died his son Hezekiah succeeded him as king.

And Hezekiah? "In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years." - 2 Kings 18:1-2. When Hezekiah died Manasseh, his son, succeeded him as king.
4. Nahum: "An oracle concerning _______. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite." What city fills the gap?

Answer: Nineveh

God was mad at Nineveh because someone from Nineveh plotted evil against God and counseled the wicked, so he was going to make an end of Nineveh. This can be found in chapter 1 verses 9 and 11.
5. Habakkuk: "I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwelling places not their own." In what chapter and verse can this passage be found?

Answer: 1:6

Habakkuk complained that people were wronging him and his prayers weren't being answered. God replied, saying that he was going to do something that Habakkuk wouldn't believe even if he wanted to.
6. Zephaniah: Who was Zephaniah's Grandfather?

Answer: Gedaliah

He is described as "Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah." (1:1). The word of God was given to Zephaniah during the time of King Josiah of Judah. Josiah was the king who was only eight years old when he became king. But that's another story.
7. Haggai: "In the second year of King ______, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel." What royal name completes the quote?

Answer: Darius

The quotation comes from chapter 1, verse 1. Darius was a Mede by descent, Nebuchadnezzar was the king who threw Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in to the fiery furnace and Xerxes was king over Persia in the time of Esther. Darius was the king who made the decree that got Daniel in trouble, or so the royal administrators thought.

They were only trying to get rid of him when they gave the idea to Darius.
8. Zechariah: Which Bible figure's father was also named Zechariah?

Answer: John the Baptist

When Zechariah heard from an angel that he was going to have a son, he didn't believe him because he thought he was too old for children. He had his power of speech taken away from him till John was born. John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin and was the one who baptised Jesus in the Jordan River.
9. Malachi: "See, I will send you the prophet _______ before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes." What prophet fills the gap?

Answer: Elijah

God says he will send him to "turn the hearts of the fathers to their Children, and the heart of the children to their fathers". This can be found in chapter 4 verse 5.
10. Ok, now we're in the New Testament. Matthew: Which of the disciples was Matthew's brother?

Answer: He didn't have one that we know of

Matthew was also called Levi and was a tax collector when he was called to Christ. (Matthew 9:9)

Bartholemew and Thaddaeus were disciples but neither of them had any relation to Matthew that we know of. The disciples who were brothers are Peter and Andrew, as well as James and John, sons of Zebedee. Peter, James and John are the ones who were with Jesus at the transfiguration and in the garden of Gethsemane when he was praying before he was arrested.
