Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ahaziah and Azazriah are two names in the Old Testament that are easy to mix up. Ahaziah was the name of two kings, one who ruled over Israel and the other who ruled over Judah. Out of the four options below, who was Azariah?

Answer: The Jewish man who was given the name Abed-Nego

While Azariah is the name of a number of different men in the Old Testament, the most well known person with such a name is a compatriot of Daniel who was originally called Azariah but given the Babylonian name Abed-Nego.

According to Daniel 1:6-7, three other Jewish men were given new names, in addition to Abed-Nego. Daniel was named Belteshazzar while Shadrach was named Hananiah and Mishael was named Meshach.

Scripture goes on to tell of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego being thrown into a fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar and not being harmed by the flames.

Azariah is also the name of two high priests of Israel, as per 1 Kings 4:2 and 2 Chronicles 26:17-20. Uzziah, king of Judah, was also known as Azariah.
2. According to 1 Kings 4:12-16 in the NKJV, Baana and Baanah were both regional governors for a king who reigned over Israel during its golden era. Who was the king?

Answer: Solomon

Baana and Baanah were both regional governors for King Solomon, as per 1 Kings 4:12-16. According to Scripture, each regional governor provided food for the king and his household for one month of the year.

According to Verse 12, Baana was the son of Ahilud and governed over "Taanach, Megiddo, and all Beth Shean, which is beside Zaretan below Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah, as far as the other side of Jokneam."

Meanwhile, Verse 16 states Baanah was the son of Hushai and governed over Asher and Aloth.

Solomon's reign was known as the golden era for Israel.

Some other minor characters in the Old Testament are also named Banna and Baanah.
3. Hoshea and Hosea are two men in the Old Testament with names that are easy to mix up. Hoshea was the original name of Joshua, son of Nun, as well as the name of a king of Israel. Who was Hosea?

Answer: A prophet of God and writer of an Old Testament book

Hosea was a prophet of God and the writer of an Old Testament book that is part of the Minor Prophet section. According to Hosea 1:1, Hosea was the son of Beeri and he prophesied in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Hosea 1:2 tells of God commanding Hosea to marry a woman of harlotry "for the land has committed great harlotry by departing from the LORD." Scripture goes on to tell of Hosea marrying Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.

Incidentally, Numbers 13:16 provides information about Joshua being originally called Hoshea.
4. Two well-known prophets of God in the Old Testament were Elijah and Elisha and their names often get mixed up, it seems. According to Scripture, which one of them appeared on Mount Transfiguration with Jesus?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah, according to Scripture, appeared on Mount Transfiguration with Jesus. Another Old Testament figure appearing along with Elijah was Moses. Witnessing the spectacle were three of the original Twelve Disciples -- Peter, James and John.

Details about the miraculous appearance on Mount Transfiguration appear in Matthew 17:1-13, Mark 9:2-13, Luke 9:28-36 and 2 Peter 1:17-18.

Elisha was an understudy of Elijah. After Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, as per 2 Kings 2:11, Elisha rose to prominence as a prophet of God.
5. Three characters with names quite similar are Bigtha, Bigthan and Biztha. The three characters are all found in a book in the NKJV that tells of the exploits of Mordecai and Haman. What's the name of the book?

Answer: Esther

Esther is the correct answer, with the names Bigtha and Biztha found in Esther 1:10 and Bigthan in Esther 2:21

According to Scripture, Bigtha and Biztha were two of seven eunuch who served Ahasuerus, king of the Persian empire. Meanwhile, Bigthan was a eunuch who, along with Teresh, "became furious and sought to lay hands" on Ahasuerus. They were thwarted in their attempt by Mordecai who informed Esther who in turn informed the king. As a result, Bigthan and Teresh were hanged.
6. Abishai and Abishag are two names easy to mix up, even though one is male and one is female. One accompanied David on a late-night visit into Saul's camp while the other was a beautiful young woman who took care of David when he was elderly and frail. Which one was female? Was it Abishai or Abishag?

Answer: Abishag

Abishag is the correct answer. 1 Kings 1:1-4 states she was a beautiful young woman who was selected to assist David when he was elderly and frail. David was always cold when he slept, even with covers on him, so Abishag would sleep beside the king. Scripture states that despite the unusual arrangement, David did not have sexual relations with Abishag.

Abishai has the distinction of accompanying David when he sneaked into Saul's camp late at night while Saul was sleeping. Saul was wanting to kill David at the time and David could have easily killed his adversary since he was sleeping. However, Scripture tells of David sparing Saul's life, even though Abishai recommended he should have taken advantage of the situation. See 1 Samuel 26:7-12 for details.
7. Another example of male and female names being easily mixed up is Delaiah and Delilah. Delaiah is the name of a number of people in the Old Testament, including an officer to King Jehoiakim of Judah who witnessed the delivery of a scroll sent by Jeremiah, as per Jeremiah 36:12. Who was Delilah?

Answer: Samson's Philistine lover who betrayed him

Delilah, of course, was the Philistine lover of Samson, a super-strong judge of Israel. According to Scripture, Delilah betrayed him when she was offered a large amount of silver by the Philistine lords. Her betrayal of Samson is one of the best known stories in the Old Testament. See Judges 16:1-31 for details.
8. Two Old Testament characters, Ziph and Ziphah, had more in common than having similar names. According to 1 Chronicles 4:16, they were brothers, the sons of Jehallelel. Who was their father Jehallelel?

Answer: A man whose name appears in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah

Jehallelel was a man whose name appears in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah. However, not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to 1 Chronicles 4:16, Jehallelel was also the father of Tiria, and Asarel, in addition to Ziph and Ziphah.
9. Two characters with similar names are Cush and Cushi. According to Scripture, Cush was the son of Ham and the grandson on Noah. Who was Cushi?

Answer: The father of Zephaniah, a prophet of God

Cushi was the father of Zephaniah, a prophet of God who wrote one of the Old Testament books that is part of the Minor Prophet section. Cushi was the son of Gedaliah, as well as the grandson of Amraiah and the great grandson of Hezekiah. In other words, Zephaniah was the great-great grandson of Hezekiah. Zephaniah prophesied in the days of Josiah, king of Judah.

See Zephaniah 1:1 for details.
10. We end our quiz with two men from the New Testament, Barsabas and Barabbas. According to Acts 1:23, Barsabas was in the running with Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth disciple, but lost out when lots were drawn. As per Matthew 27:15, who was Barabbas?

Answer: A notorious prisoner released over Jesus

Barabbas, a man described in Matthew 27:15 as a "notorious prisoner", was given his freedom over Jesus. According to Scripture, Jesus was beaten, humiliated, scourged, tortured and crucified only to rise from the dead three days later.

There's a third man, Barnabas, with a name similar to Barsabas and Barabbas. According to Scripture, he was known as the Son of Encouragement and was a key worker in the early church.
