Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start our quiz about Bible people with similar sounding names by taking a look at Hiram and Huram. According to Scripture, they were both involved in helping an Israelite king build a majestic temple for the LORD in Jerusalem. Who was the Israelite king who built the temple?

Answer: Solomon

Solomon was the king of Israel who spearheaded the building of the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. According to scripture, two men -- one named Hiram, the other Huram -- played roles in making construction of the temple a reality.

Huram was a master craftsman of King Hiram of Tyre and on the request of Solomon, Hiram sent his highly talented craftsman to Jerusalem. (See 1 Kings 5:1 and 1 Kings 7:13.)

According to Scripture, Huram "was the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a bronze worker" and he was "filled with wisdom and understanding and skill in working with all kinds of bronze work."

It must be pointed out there are two different spellings for names of the king of Tyre as well as his master craftsman in different books in the NKJV. Making things complicated is the fact both men shared the same names. In other words, the king is referred to as both Hiram and as Huram in Scripture. Meanwhile, his master craftsman is referred to as both Huram and Hiram.

For example, 2 Chronicles 2:3 refers to the king of Tyre as Hiram while 1 Kings 5:1 refers to him as Huram.

Meanwhile, in the NIV, the king is referred to as only Hiram and his master craftsman is called Huram-Abi and Huram. Offering an explanation of all the confusion, notes in the NIV Study Bible point out Hiram is a Hebrew variant of Huram.
2. Job and Joab are two characters in the Old Testament who share names that are similar. Job, of course, is known for his patience and long suffering. Who was Joab?

Answer: The commander of David's army

Joab was the commander of the Israelite army during the reign of King David. According to 1 Samuel 26:6, Joab was the son of Zeruiah and the nephew of David. Scripture tells of Joab killing Abner and Absalom against David's express wishes. When David was elderly and on his death bed, he instructed Solomon, his replacement, to execute Joab, as per 1 Kings 2:29-34.

Meanwhile, Job's trails and tribulations are chronicled in the book of Job in the Old Testament.
3. Abijah and Abijam are two names easily mixed up, even though, in this case, one is male and the other female. According to Scripture, Abijah married King Ahaz and was the mother of King Hezekiah. Using the NKJV, who was Abijam?

Answer: A King of Judah

Abijam, the son of Jeroboam, was a king of Judah, as per 1 Kings 14:1. (Making things a little confusing, Abijam is also known as Abijah in 1 Chronicles 3:10 in the NKJV. Meanwhile, the NIV refers to the king as Abijah in 1 Kings 14:1.)

In addition to Abijah, wife of King Ahaz, two other people, both of them male, share the name in the Old Testament. They include a son of Samuel (as per 1 Samuel 8:2) and a descendant of Eleazar, a high priest of Israel (as per 1 Chronicles 24:10).
4. Using the NKJV and the KJV, there are two men who have names strikingly similar. They are Zechariah and Zacharias. Zechariah was an Old Testament prophet. Who was Zacharias? (The NIV uses the name Zechariah rather than Zacharias.)

Answer: The father of John the Baptist

Zacharias was the father of John the Baptist. Luke 1:5-57 tells of Zacharias' wife Elizabeth giving birth to John the Baptist, even though she and her husband were elderly. John the Baptist would serve as the forerunner of Christ. Details of John's ministry can be found in the four Gospels.
5. Shem and Shemer are two Old Testament names easily mixed up. According to 1 Kings 16:24, Shemer owned property which was sold to Omri, king of Israel. Who was Shem?

Answer: A son of Noah

Shem was a son of Noah, as per Genesis 5:32. Shem had two brothers -- Ham and Japheth. No name is given for Noah's wife.

According to 1 Kings 16:24, Omri purchased a hill from Shemer in Samaria for two talents of silver and proceeded to build a city on the hill. The verse states the city was called Shemer, after the original owner of the hill.

(In the NIV, Shemer is known as Shomer.)
6. Rezon and Rezin have more in common than having similar sounding names. According to Scripture, both of them were adversaries of the Israelites.

Answer: True

True. Rezon and Rezin were men in the Old Testament who were adversaries of the Israelites.

According to 1 Kings 11:23, Rezon was raised up by God as an adversary against Solomon. The verse states Rezon was "the son of Eliadah, who had fled from his lord, Hadadezer king of Zobah."

Meanwhile, Rezin was king of Syria and he too was raised up by God against the people of Judah, as per 2 Kings 15:37. According to the verse, Rezin was the son of Remaliah. (In the NIV, it states Rezin was king of Aram and Pekah.)
7. Chelub and Chelubai are two minor characters from the Old Testament with names that are quite similar. Interestingly, their names are found in only one book, using the NKJV. What is the name of the book that contains the names Chelub and Chelubai? (The NIV uses different spellings.)

Answer: 1 Chronicles

The names Chelub and Chelubai are found in only 1 Chronicles and are minor characters.

Actually there are two men called Chelub. One was a descendant of Judah, as per 1 Chronicles 4:11, while the second one was an overseer of agricultural work during the reign of David, as per 1 Chronicles 27:26.

Meanwhile, Chelubai, the son of Herzon, is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:9.

In the NIV, Chelub is called Kelub and Chebai is called Caleb.)
8. Two names from the Old Testament that are easy to mix up are Eliezer and Eleazar. According to Scripture, Eliezer came from Damascus and was the senior servant of Abraham. Who was Eleazar?

Answer: A son of Aaron and a high priest of the Israelites

Eleazar was the high priest of the Israelites. Although he was the son of Aaron and a nephew of Moses, Eleazar is strongly connected with Joshua. After Aaron's death, Scripture tells of Moses putting the priestly garments on Eleazar, as per Numbers 20:28. In the book of Joshua, details are given about Eleazar and Joshua working hand-in-hand. For example, when tracts of land in Canaan were divided up for the twelve tribes, Joshua and Eleazar were both instrumental in seeing the massive project through.

I find it highly interesting the deaths of Eleazar and Joshua are both recorded in Joshua 24.

For the record, Eliezer, Abraham's senior servant is mentioned in Genesis 15:2.
9. Meshach and Meshech are two names from the Old Testament that are remarkably similar. According to 1 Chronicles 17:1, Meshech was a son of Shem and a grandson of Noah. Who was Meshach?

Answer: A compatriot of Shadrach and Abed-Nego

Meshech was originally known as Mishael and was thrown into a fiery along with Sharach and Abed-Nego, as per the orders of King Nebuchadnezzar. According to Scripture, the three Jewish men were not harmed by the flames. The three men who survived their ordeal in the fiery furnace were friends of Daniel, also known as Belteshazzar. See chapters 1 to 3 of Daniel for details.

(In the NIV, Meshech's name appears as Meshek.)
10. Micaiah and Micah have more in common than having names that are similar as both were prophets of God. Which one is the writer of a book in the Old Testament? Is it Micaiah or is it Micah?

Answer: Micah

Micah, of course, is the writer of the book in the Old Testament that bears his name. The book is part of the Minor Prophet section of the Christian Bible, and the Twelve Prophet section in the Hebrew Bible.

Micaiah was the son of Imlah. He prophesied in the days of Jehosaphat and Ahab, as per 1 Kings 22 and 2 Chronicles 18.
