Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. NOAH: After God flooded the earth he sent a rainbow. He told Noah this would be a sign of his ____. (Give the word used in the King James translation.)

Answer: Covenant

God made a promise to Noah and all his descendants and every living creature that never again would a flood destroy the earth.

He then sent a rainbow as a symbol of this Covenant.

"And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth." Genesis 9:11-13
2. ISAAC: How did Abraham's servant know which girl to choose as a wife for Isaac?

Answer: The one who offered his camels water

Abraham sent his servant back to his homeland to choose a wife for Isaac.

The servant was worried about making the right choice so he stopped by the well outside the city of Nahor and prayed to God :

"And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master." Genesis 2:12-14

Rebekah, who was the daughter of Abraham's nephew, is the woman who offered the camels a drink.
3. JACOB: What did Esau sell to his twin brother Jacob for a bowl of lentil soup?

Answer: His birthright

Esau was the firstborn and thus the one to inherit his father's worldly goods.

He came in famished from the fields one day and found Jacob making soup, and asked for some to feed his hunger.

Jacob offered him the soup in return for his birthright and made Esau promise it before he would give him any.

Jacob did receive Esau's blessing from their father but he stole this from him - Esau did not sell it. (Genesis 25:29-34)
4. JOSEPH: When Joseph's brothers plotted to kill him, one of them talked the others into throwing him in a pit instead, intending to return later and save him. Which brother was this?

Answer: Reuben

"And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again." Genesis 37:22

His plan was foiled when the Ishmaelites came along and Judah came up with the idea of selling Joseph instead.
5. MOSES: Moses was hidden in a basket in the bullrushes and watched over by his sister. What was her name?

Answer: Miriam

After Joseph's family followed him to Egypt, the Israelites flourished in numbers.

The new Pharaoh became concerned about this, in case they should ever rise against him, and passed an edict that Hebrew daughters could live but the sons must be "cast into the river."

Jochebed gave birth to a baby boy and managed to hide him for three months and then made him a basket of bulrushes and placed him in it in the river.

Miriam watched over him, hidden in the reeds. The Pharaoh's daughter found him and decided to adopt him.

Miriam came out of hiding and suggested finding a nurse for the baby, and brought Jochebed back to raise him.

Moses was thus raised to know his Hebrew background.
6. SAMSON: Samson killed a thousand Philistines with an animal bone. What type of bone was it?

Answer: Jawbone of an ass

This occurred after Samson had set the Philistines' fields alight.

They could not capture him, but he allowed the men of Judah to bind him and deliver him to them.

"And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith." Judges 15:14-15
7. SAMUEL: Samuel heard the voice of the Lord calling to him when he was a child. Whose voice did he think it was?

Answer: Eli

Samuel's mother dedicated him to the service of God before he was born. When he was a young child, she left him with the priest Eli.

One night Samuel heard a voice calling him and went to Eli saying "Here I am."

After the third time this happened, Eli realised that it was God that was calling Samuel.

The next time he heard his name Samuel answered, "Speak Lord for your servant is listening", as Eli had instructed him. (I Samuel 3)
8. DAVID: Which king was in charge of the Israelites in the battle against the Philistines when David slew Goliath?

Answer: Saul

"And he (Goliath) stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? Am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? Choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us." I Samuel 17:8-9

Saul and his army were camped, trying to decide who would fight Goliath, when David appeared to check on his three older brothers who were in Saul's army.

Ahab, Jehoram and Zechariah were all Kings of Israel, but they came much later.
9. DANIEL: What crime did Daniel commit to be thrown into the lion's den?

Answer: Praying to God

Daniel was a favourite of the new King Darius. There were 120 princes and presidents in the kingdom and they all had to answer to him.

They were jealous of him and wanted to get rid of him, but Daniel was a faithful and loyal subject and they had no cause so they plotted to find a way to get rid of him.

Knowing that Daniel worshiped his God above all else they set a trap for him and wrote the following decree, supposedly to praise the King.

"All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions." Daniel 6:7

Daniel continued to pray and give thanks to God three times a day, as he had always done.
10. JONAH: Jonah was a passenger on a boat before the great tempest caused him to be thrown overboard and swallowed by a great fish. Where was the boat heading to?

Answer: Tarshish

God was disappointed by how wicked Nineveh had become, so he told Jonah to go there and preach in order to warn them.

Jonah did not want to do this, so he fled to Joppa and found a ship that was heading to Tarshish, which was in the opposite direction.

Marah is one of the places that the Israelites passed through on their Exodus from Egypt.
