Bible Stories Trivia Questions

1. In what New Testament book of the Bible can you find out about a woman named Tabitha who was raised from the dead by Simon Peter? (She was also known by the name Dorcas, as well.)

From Quiz
Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: Acts

In Acts 9:36-41 we find the story of Tabitha whom Simon Peter raised from the dead. "Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive." ~ King James Version

2. Joseph was sold as a slave and taken to Egypt where he became the Pharaoh's right-hand-man in overseeing food distribution during a seven year famine. When his brothers came to Egypt to buy food, how did Joseph treat them?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: he accused them of being spies, then was coolly gracious, then forgave them

Joseph's brothers were jealous of the favoritism showed to Joseph by their father, Jacob. They plotted to murder him, but Judah persuaded the others to sell him as a slave to a caravan of traders heading to Egypt. Despite many hardships while in Egypt, Joseph built a reputation as an interpreter of dreams. When Pharaoh was troubled by disturbing dreams that none of his magicians could explain, Joseph was called in and said that the dreams meant a coming famine and advised that Egypt should begin to store grain against it. Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph's wisdom that he made him a high official overseeing the food storage and distribution. During the famine, Jacob sent his ten eldest sons to Egypt to buy grain. They didn't recognize Joseph, but he knew his brothers and spoke gruffly to them at first, then tested them in various ways to see if they had changed. After being satisfied that they had matured and were remorseful for what they had done many years ago, he revealed himself to them, then invited his whole family to come and live in Egypt.

3. Deception at its finest. A man steals a birthright and blessing from his brother by posing in goat's skin before his father. Who is the culprit in the case of "The Wrong Blessing"?

From Quiz BSI: Bible Scene Investigators

Answer: Jacob

A mother, and her son, gang up against his twin brother! When Isaac sent Esau out to the woods, Jacob's mother dressed him in goat skin and told him to bring a meal before his father. The old man could not see very well and was about to die. He was expecting Esau to bring him the meal so he could bless him. He should have trusted his inner instinct that something was wrong, but he felt Jacob's (pardon me...the goat's skin) hair and believed he had the right son. When Esau came in, he wept and cried when he found out Jacob had stolen his blessing and birthright. He vowed to kill his brother if he ever got the chance! Bible thieves and cheaters, beware! (Case File, Genesis 27)

4. Why did Moses balk at first about being a leader of the Hebrews in order to lead them out of their Egyptian slavery?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: he felt he wasn't an eloquent enough speaker

God spoke to Moses from a bush that burned, but was not burnt and told him of the mission to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Even though God showed Moses that he was chosen by turning Moses' staff into a serpent and making Moses' hand leprous, then curing it, Moses was still reluctant citing that he was "slow of speech and slow of tongue." (Exodus 4:10). God then told Moses to have his brother Aaron do the talking when they went before Pharaoh.

5. Ruth's story is one that involved her entering into a relationship with a wealthy relative of her deceased husband. She later married this man named Boaz, and they had a child. What was his name?

From Quiz Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: Obed

Ruth and Boaz had a son, Obed. He was the father of Jesse, who later became the father of eight sons; the youngest of whom was David. David became the second king of Israel, after King Saul was killed in battle. Solomon, one of David's sons, became the third king of Israel.

6. King David wanted to build a magnificent temple in which to place the Ark of the Covenant and use as a center of worship, however God told David not to build the Temple. Why?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: He was a man of war

God wanted a man of peace to build the Temple (1 Chronicles 28:3,6). David's son Solomon, who had never lead Israel into battle, was permitted to erect the Temple. Labor was conscripted from male Israelites and materials brought in from many other nations.

7. In the King James Version of the Bible, Luke 22, Jesus was talking to a group of people. Judas came up to Jesus and... I can't seem to remember what Judas did. Can you remember what happens next?

From Quiz Please Tell Me the Ending

Answer: He kissed Jesus.

Jesus knew exactly why Judas gave him a kiss. It was a sign to show the priests and elders who the Son of Man was. It was Judas' way to betray Jesus. According to Matthew 27, he received 30 pieces of silver for the betrayal. Afterwards he tried to return the silver.

8. Esther is a book in the Old Testament. In this saga, who was the arch enemy of Esther and her relative, Mordecai?

From Quiz Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: Haman

Haman was a wicked man with high ambitions and low morals. His vile actions seemed to be motivated by pride and ambition while he showed complete disregard for the captive Jewish population of Persia, (modern-day Iran). In the end, he met his own demise in the same way that he had planned to have Mordecai executed, on the same gallows that he had prepared for that just man. Mordecai, on the other hand, was elevated to a position of power by Esther's husband, the king of Persia.

9. Queen Esther, who was really a Jewess named Hadassah, saved the Hebrews from extermination by Haman, the jealous court adviser to King Ahasuerus. This is now observed by Jews today as what holiday?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: Purim

Haman was angry at the Jews because they would not bow to him in public. He plotted to destroy them and cast lots (pur) to see what day of the year he should undertake his evil plan and had the king make it a law. It fell on the 13th day of the twelfth month (Adar). However the king regretted this when Esther made it know to him that she was a Jew, having been informed of Haman's plot by her close relative, Mordecai. Although the king could not revoke the law, he allowed the Hebrews to defend themselves, thereby avoiding a total extermination. Since than, this day on the Jewish calendar is observed as a feast of Purim on the western calendar falls anywhere from late February to mid March. Esther 3:7,13 and 9:24-26.

10. Joseph was the favorite son of his father. His father wanted to do something special for his favorite son. What did he make him, according to Genesis 37?

From Quiz Please Tell Me the Ending

Answer: Coat of many colors

It's sad when a parent picks a child as "their favorite", but that's exactly what Israel did to his son. As you can imagine, his brothers were not happy and hated Joseph because of this. I could go further, but grab a Bible and read more about what happens to Joseph in the book of Genesis. I will say that the end of the story is good.

11. Joseph was given a coat of many colors, as a sign of favor. Who was responsible for this gift to him?

From Quiz Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: his father, Jacob

Joseph received a coat from his dad, Jacob. His brothers became quite jealous of their younger brother, and sold him into slavery, dipping his coat in goat's blood and claiming to their father that a wild animal must have killed him and drug him away. Later, after a stint in an Egyptian prison, Joseph became the second most powerful figure in all of Egypt, and because of a famine in their homeland, his brothers were obligated to beg food from him. He graciously gave them what they needed, displaying forgiveness instead of demanding retribution.

12. What miracle did Joshua perform during the battle to save the city of Gibeon?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: He commanded the sun and moon to stand still

During the battle, Joshua was afraid the routed enemy armies would escape under cover of darkness. He prayed for the sun and moon to stand still in order to have enough light to keep pursuing the enemies. The prayer was granted. Joshua 10:12-14.

13. Saul was on his way to which city to persecute Christians when he had a vision of Jesus?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: Damascus

Saul, later to be re-named Paul, was on his way to Damascus to slaughter Christians when he saw a great light and heard a voice asking, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" He was struck blind and taken to the city where he was cured by Ananias. After that, Saul became a staunch proponent of the new religion and changed his name to Paul. Acts 9.

14. Mary was quite pregnant and was traveling with her husband, Joseph. Joseph and Mary tried to get a room at the Inn, but there wasn't any more room. I forget what happened at this point of the story. Can you help me finish the story?

From Quiz Please Tell Me the Ending

Answer: Mary had a child and wrapped the child in clothing and laid him in a manger.

Two different books of the Bible offer storylines about Jesus being born. Luke and Matthew each offer their own version of Jesus and his visitors, including three wise men. Even an angel appeared to the shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus. The shepherds headed to Bethlehem to pay their respects to the new baby.

15. In which book of the New Testament does Paul urge the fledgling Christians to put on the armor of God?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: Ephesians

This can be found in Ephesians 6:11-17: "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

16. A man named Nicodemus once met with Jesus by night. What question did he ask of Jesus?

From Quiz Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: How can a man be born when he is old?

Nicodemus approached Jesus by night probably because he feared that his fellow Jewish members of the governing body of the Sanhedrin would find out that he was interested in what Jesus had to say. After all, the religious leadership of the day was very opposed to the teachings of Christ, and Nicodemus apparently had heard something about Jesus that had piqued his interest. When Jesus explained to him that he must be "born again" to enter the kingdom of God, Nicodemus was confused and asked, "How can a man be born when he is old?" in John 3:4. Jesus responded, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." ~King James Version

17. Who is generally credited for writing the book of Proverbs?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: King Solomon

This is revealed in Proverbs 1:1 - "The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel." Solomon is often credited as being the wisest king Israel. In a famous bible story, he judges between two women who each claimed one baby was hers. Solomon ordered the child be divided and a half given to each woman. One of the women pleaded to have the baby given to the other woman rather an to see it slain. Solomon then knew she was real mother. Proverbs is a book of his collected saying of wisdom and good general principles.

18. Time for a coffee break and some paperwork. Looking over past case files, we don't have DNA to prove this one. Two ladies were fighting over a misplaced child. How did Solomon judge the case of "Two Ladies and a Baby"?

From Quiz BSI: Bible Scene Investigators

Answer: He asked for a sword to divide the child in two.

King Solomon was the wisest king in the world. When these two ladies came to him with a child, he had to decide who the real mother was. They had both had babies around the same time, and during the night one baby was crushed when its mother rolled over. They were fighting over the child that was still alive. Solomon heard both sides of the tale, then asked for a sword to divide the child in two. The real mother offered to give her baby up to save its life. Solomon handed the child to her over the protests of the other woman. He told the court that a real mother would do anything to save her child, even if it meant losing it. (Case File, 1 Kings 3)

19. What type of creature did the prophet Jonah have a problem with, near the end of the book of Jonah?

From Quiz Favorite Bible Stories of the BBB

Answer: worm

Yes, the lowly little worm caused Jonah quite some grief, at least from his perspective. God used the worm to cause a vine to die; the vine had provided Jonah a shade under which he rested, and Jonah grieved over it. God used this as an object lesson for him, pointing out that the people of Nineveh had needed the message that God had sent him to provide, albeit against Jonah's original wishes.

20. What was Balaam on his way to do when his donkey spoke to him?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School

Answer: Curse the Hebrews

King Balak sent for Balaam to curse the Israelites because he was afraid of them and wanted to conquer them before they had a chance to settle in Canaan. On his way, the donkey Balaam was riding kept balking because she saw an angel standing in the roadway. Balaam beat her until she spoke rebuking his behavior, then Balaam finally saw the angel. However, God would not permit Balaam to curse Israel, although he tried three times. Instead three blessings were given to the Hebrews. (Numbers 22).

22. How many men did Samson the judge kill with the jawbone of an ass?

From Quiz What I Learned in Sunday School
