Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 19:30, who lived in a cave with his two daughters?

Answer: Lot

The correct answer is Lot. Genesis 19:30 states Lot lived in a cave with his two unnamed daughters in the mountains of Zoar. The chapter goes on to tell of his daughters getting him drunk to trick him into into impregnating them. The young women thought their actions were justified as there were no other men for them in the area and they wanted to preserve their father's blood line, according to Scripture.
2. Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Leah were all buried in a cave in Machpelah.

Answer: True

True. Details about the burials can be found in Genesis 23:19, 25:9, 35:29 and 49:30-31, with most of the details being found in 49:30-31. Jacob, while on his deathbed, made a plea to his twelve sons to bury him in a family cave in Macphelah. According to Verse 31, buried there previously were Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Jacob's first wife Leah.

According to the passage, the cave was "in the field of Ephron the Hittite" and was "before Mamre in the land of Canaan." The cave was originally purchased by Abraham as a burial place.
3. Who trapped five Canaanite kings in a cave by rolling stones at the mouth, and then killed them later?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua is the correct answer as per Joshua 10:16-27. Scripture tells of the five Canaanite kings found hidden in a cave at Makkedah, with Joshua giving the orders to "roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them." (The five kings represented Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon). Scripture goes on to tell of the kings being executed. Joshua 10:27 states: "And afterward Joshua struck them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging on the trees until evening."
4. According to 1 Samuel 22:1-2, who took refuge in a cave with four hundred men?

Answer: David

According to 1 Samuel 22:1-2, David took refuge in the cave of Aedullam with about four hundred men. This all happened when King Saul was attempting to kill David. The passage states the men in the cave with David were in stress and discontented, "so he became captain over them." It would be only a matter of time before Saul would end up committing suicide, with David eventually becoming king over all of Israel.
5. According to Judges 6:2, from whom did the Israelites hide in caves?

Answer: Midianites

Judges 6:1-6 tells of the Midianites oppressing Israel. The passage states the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD "so the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years." To escape the Midianites, Verse 2 states the people hid in caves.

Verse 6 tells of the Israelites crying out to the LORD for help. Shortly after, Scripture tells of the arrival of Gideon as judge of Israel. Under Gideon's direction, the people of Israel were set free from the oppression of the Midianites.
6. According to 1 Samuel 13:5-7, what attacking people drove the Israelites to caves during the time of Saul?

Answer: Philistines

During the time of Saul, the first king of Israel, the Philistines were far and away the most feared enemy in a hostile world. According to 1 Samuel 13:5-7, the Philistines presented an invading force that struck fear in the hearts of the Israelites. The passage tells of the Philistines gathering together thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and "people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude" to fight the Israelites. When the invading force encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven, the Israelites "hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits."

Chapter 14, however, goes on to tell of Jonathan, with the help of the LORD, leading the Israelites to a spectacular military victory over the Philistines. Jonathan was the son of Saul.
7. According to 1 Kings 19:9, what prophet of God hid in a cave to escape the evil clutches of Jezebel?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah is the correct answer. 1 Kings 19:1-9 tells of Elijah fleeing from Jezebel, a vehement opponent of prophets of God, and hiding in a cave. According to the passage, Elijah was so depressed, he even considered taking his own life. However, things took a dramatic turn when the word of God came to Elijah while he was hiding in a cave, Scripture states.
8. Who hid in the cleft of a rock while God passed by?

Answer: Moses

According to Exodus 33:20-23, Moses hid in the cleft of a rock while God passed by. Verse 20 tells of the LORD telling Moses, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live."

Verses 21-23 tell of Moses being put in the cleft of a rock while the glory of the LORD passed by. The verses also state the LORD covered Moses with His hand while He passed by. "Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen," God is quoted in the NKJV.
9. According to 1 Kings 18:4, who hid a total of one hundred prophets of God in two different caves to prevent them from being killed by Ahab and Jezebel?

Answer: Obadiah

Obadiah is the correct answer. According to 1 Kings 18:3, Obadiah was in charge of King Ahab's household. And while Ahab and his wife Jezebel worshipped false gods, the verse states states Obadiah "feared the LORD greatly."

1 Kings 18:3-19 tells of Elijah and Obadiah meeting followed by a another meeting between Elijah and Ahab. According to Verse 13, Obadiah "hid one hundred men of the LORD'S prophets, fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water."

The prophets were hid by Obadiah to prevent them from being killed by Ahab and Jezebel who were vehemently opposed to prophets of God.
10. According to John 11:38, what friend of Jesus was buried in a cave at Bethany?

Answer: Lazarus

The correct answer is Lazarus. According to John 11:38, Lazarus was buried in a cave and a rock was placed at the mouth. Scripture states Lazurus had been dead for four days when Christ miraculously brought him back to life. The miracle took place in Bethany, a small community just outside Jerusalem in Biblical times. Christ performed a long list of miracles, but bringing Lazarus back to life after four days ranks as one of the greatest.
