Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color were the stones that the high priest, Aaron, wore on the shoulderpieces of his priestly vestments (the ephod)?

Answer: black

The stones were black - onyx - and contained the names of tribes of the children of Israel, six names per stone. These were placed upon the shoulders of the high priest, perhaps so that God, when looking down on the priest, would see the names as a reminder that these were His chosen people. (Exodus 28: 6-12)
2. King David is described as having a "beautiful countenance" with a complexion best described as what color?

Answer: red or ruddy

This comes from 1 Samuel 16:12. The prophet Samuel was sent by God to anoint one of Jesse's sons as the next king of Israel, who would replace Saul. Samuel was not sure which of the sons was to be anointed, so David's seven older brothers were presented first. David was then sent for, from the fields where he was tending sheep, and Samuel, upon seeing him face to face, realized that this was the son that would one day be Israel's second king.

He proceeded to anoint David that day.
3. According to the book of Revelation, what, in the city of new Jerusalem, is described as pure gold?

Answer: the city itself and the street

In Revelation 21:21, we are told the STREET (singular) of the city is "pure gold, as it were transparent glass." Many people somehow read into this that the streets are paved with gold. This verse brings to our attention that only one street is mentioned, and instead of it being paved, it is MADE of pure gold. Also, in verse 18, we notice that the city itself is pure gold.
4. Moses was on Mount Sinai, receiving instructions on how to construct the tabernacle as well as the ten commandments. The Israelites, with the help of Moses' brother Aaron, the high priest, were busy making a molten golden calf. Since they were wandering through the wilderness, where had they obtained the gold they used to make it? Specifically, who had provided it to them?

Answer: The Egyptians

The Egyptians, who had suffered a series of 10 plagues because they continued holding the Israelites captive after Moses' requests to the Pharaoh were denied, were apparently so relieved to be rid of them and the plagues, that they gave them all manner of silver, gold, jewels and clothing. (Exodus 12:35-36)
5. King Belshazzar, the son of King Nebuchadnezzar of the Babylonians, defiled the vessels that had been taken from the city of Jerusalem when the Israelites were captured and brought into captivity. These vessels were of what two colors?

Answer: gold and silver

Because of this act of desecration, Belshazzar saw a disembodied hand writing "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" upon the plaster of the wall of the palace. Daniel, the prophet who was captive in Babylon, was called upon to interpret the message. He informed Belshazzar that his kingdom was finished, that Belshazzar himself was found wanting according to God's scales of balance, and his kingdom would be divided between the Medes and Persians. That very night, Belshazzar was killed and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom.

The entire account may be found in the book of Daniel, Chapter 5.
6. In the book of Revelation, we see a throne mentioned. Christians believe that this is the throne of Christ as seen in heaven. Three colors are mentioned in Revelation 4:3, but only one is mentioned as a rainbow surrounding this throne. What color is this rainbow?

Answer: emerald green

In chapter 4, verse 3 of Revelation, we see an emerald rainbow around the throne. Christians believe that Jesus was the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5) and the stone that represents Judah is an emerald. This color may represent life, (think greenery, like springtime.) Because it is a rainbow going all the way around the throne with no beginning and no end, it may represent the eternal; thus, "eternal life."
7. Israel (Jacob) loved his son Joseph more than all of his brothers, according to Genesis 37:3. As a result, he made him a coat of many colors. His brothers, jealous of his standing with their father and despising his many dreams or visions, decided to remove it from him. What color did they change the coat to?

Answer: red

His brothers actually plotted to kill him, but the oldest son, Reuben, stopped them. However, they did sell him into slavery via a passing caravan that was on its way to Egypt. They then dipped the coat in a baby goat's blood that they had killed for this purpose.

In this way, they could convince their father that he had been attacked by a wild animal and they had "found" only his coat, which was left behind. (Genesis 37)
8. The color of the gates of the New Jerusalem, mentioned in the book of Revelation, are best described as being a milky-white color, (or at least as which of the following?):

Answer: pearls

The 21st verse of the 21st chapter tells us that the gates were pearls. They are not constructed of pearls, but each one is one solid pearl. (These must be SOME pearls!)
9. Throughout the Bible we often read of God being a God of light, and associate many attributes to him in this regard. Where do we find Him being manifested in thick darkness?

Answer: Deuteronomy 4:11-12

Notice that in Deuteronomy it does not say that God IS darkness, it merely states that he appeared in clouds of darkness while the mountain was on fire. This may represent a volcanic eruption, although that is not stated. The children of Israel did not see God, because of the darkness, but they did hear his voice.
10. We read an account of Jesus placing a curse on a fig tree in one of the four gospels. What color were the figs?

Answer: there were no figs

The tree had produced no fruit because it was not yet the season for them. Jesus may have chosen this action in order to teach a lesson to his disciples the following morning: a lesson about prayer and speaking things into and out of existence through faith. (Mark 11:12-24)
