Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the color match for Moses. (Exodus 15:4)

Answer: Red Sea

According to Scripture, God parted the Red Sea for Moses and the Israelites as they made their mass exodus out of Egypt. Although Exodus 14 tells of the parting of the Red Sea allowing the Israelites to escape followed by the subsequent drowning of the Egyptian army, nowhere does it identify the body of water in the KJV, the NKJV or the NIV.

Only in Exodus 15:4, words from the song of celebration by Moses and Miriam, does it identify the body of water as the Red Sea.
2. Find the color match for Esau. (Genesis 25:25)

Answer: Red skinned

Esau was born with lots of hair and red skin, according to Scripture. His brother Jacob was born at the same time. They were the sons of Isaac and Rebekah.

Genesis 25:24-26, in the NKJV, gives this account of the births of the boys: "So when her days were fulfilled for her [Rebekah] to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau's heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them."
3. Find the color match for Rahab. (Joshua 2:18)

Answer: Scarlet cord

According to Scripture, Rahab was told to put a scarlet cord outside her residence in Jericho to serve as a message to approaching Israelite armies to spare her family. Joshua 2 tells of such arrangements being made after Rahab provided a refuge for two Israelite spies commissioned by Joshua to check out the city. Joshua 2:6 states Rahab hid the spies under a pile of flax on her roof when the king of Jericho caught wind two Israelite spies had visited her house. After a search by the king's soldiers for the two spies turned up futile, Scripture states Rahab enabled the Israelites to escape as she lowered them down from the city's wall with a rope. According to Verse 15, her house was built along the city's wall.

The Website Biblehub.com offers this interesting perspective on the symbolism of Rahab's scarlet cord: "As early as the first century, commentators such as Clement of Rome, Justin Martyr, Ireneaus, Origen and more saw this scarlet cord as a symbol of the blood of Jesus."
4. Find the color match for Joseph's cup. (Genesis 44:2)

Answer: Silver

Joseph's cup, according to Scripture, was silver. The silver cup was planted in a sack belonging to Benjamin, Joseph's younger full-brother. Benjamin had visited Egypt with his ten other brothers to obtain food to take back to Canaan during a time of severe famine. During their visit, the brothers did not recognize Joseph. They simply saw him as the second in command in Egypt, not as their long-lost brother.

After their departure, Joseph assigned his steward to pursue the caravan and check it for stolen items. Joseph's other half brothers were highly distraught when the silver cup was found in Benjamin's sack because they knew their elderly father wouldn't be able to deal with the loss of him after the so-called death of Joseph.

Eventually, Joesph revealed his true identity to his brothers and after complete amazement they agreed to return to Canaan to get Jacob and take him to Egypt to see Joseph. The end result is the Israelites became permanent residents of Egypt for about 400 years.
5. Find the color match for Jacob's cattle and sheep. (Genesis 30:32)

Answer: Spotted color

According to the New King James Version Bible, Jacob made an arrangement with Laban that whenever a sheep was born, he could keep it if the animal was speckled, spotted or brown. (Rather than brown, the NIV uses the word 'colored' and the Easy to Read Version uses the word 'black'.) If it was white and without specks or spots, Laban would keep it.

However, when a large number of sheep were born speckled and spotted, Laban became infuriated.

According to Scripture, Jacob cut "rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods." Jacob then put the branches in front of the flocks at the watering places. When the animals came to drink, they would also mate. Scripture states that when the animals mated in front of the rods, the young that were born were streaked, speckled, and spotted. As a result, the animals became property of Jacob.

Genesis 30:43 reports Jacob "became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks, female and male servants, and camels and donkeys."

At first blush, Jacob's tactics appear to be fraudulent. However, Scripture states his tactics were endorsed by the LORD because Laban had taken advantage of Jacob in a number of ways. Laban, of course, had deceived Jacob by getting him to work fourteen years to win the hand of Rachel. There were other issues as well. Genesis 31:7 quotes Jacob as saying Laban had changed his wages "ten times".

Verses 38 to 40 tell of Jacob telling Laban of more abuses he suffered: "These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock. That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes."

The chapter, however, concludes with Jacob and Laban agreeing to a covenant and living in peace.
6. Find the color match for the Psalm by David known as 'The LORD is My Shepherd' and its reference to pastures. (Psalm 23:2)

Answer: Green

Psalm 23 was written by David and it is known as 'The LORD is My Shepherd'. Verse 2 makes reference to green pastures. The Psalm is by far and away the best known Psalm out of 150 that appear in the Old Testament.

Here's how Psalm 23 appears in its entirety, as per the NKJV:
"The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.
7. Find the color match for the hair of a leper. (Leviticus 13:30)

Answer: Yellow

The finding of a yellow hair on the head or the beard of a person was a major concern.

Leviticus 13:29-30 in the NKJV explains things this way: "If a man or woman has a sore on the head or the beard, then the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed if it appears deeper than the skin, and there is in it thin yellow hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a scaly leprosy of the head or beard."

In Biblical times. leprosy was a dread disease with no known cure. As a result, lepers were outcast from their communities to prevent contamination of others.
8. Find the color match for harvest fields. (John 4:35 in KJV and NKJV)

Answer: White

According to John 4:35, Jesus told His disciples the harvest fields were white and ready to harvest. (In the NIV, there is no mention of the color white. It quotes Jesus as saying "...Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.")

Christ made the statement about the harvest fields after He had a conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well. It was during that conversation He made the famous declaration in John 4:13-14 in the NKJV: "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

To put things in perspective, here's how John 4:33-38 reads in the NKJV: "Therefore the disciples said to one another, 'Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?' Jesus said to them, 'My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors'."
9. Find the color match for Lydia.

Answer: Purple cloth

Lydia was originally from Thyatira and, according to Scripture, the apostle Paul encountered her while she was selling purple cloth in Philippi. Going by what is documented in the Book of Acts, Lydia was the first believer in Europe in a resurrected Jesus Christ. Lydia and her household were baptized by Paul.

Acts 16:14-15 explains things this way in the NKJV: "Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, 'If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.' So she persuaded us."
10. Find the color match for Jesus. (John 19:1-3)

Answer: Purple robe

According to Scripture, Jesus was forced to wear a purple robe as he carried the cross to Golgatha. John 19:1-3, in the NKJV, explains things this way: "So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. Then they said, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' And they struck Him with their hands."

Verses 5 and 6 tell of Jesus, while dressed in the purple robe and a crown of thorns, appearing before the chief priests and their officials. They responded by crying out "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"

In Biblical days, the color purple was associated with royalty and kingship. However, in this case, Jesus was dressed in purple simply to mock and humiliate Him.

Incidentally, Scripture also tells of the likes of Daniel and Mordecai wearing purple robes.
