Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Esther came on the scene, the mighty king of Media and Persia had a beautiful wife whom he dethroned. What was the name of his first queen?

Answer: Vashti

Esther 1:9-11 tells us that the name of the queen was Vashti and that she was beautiful to behold.
2. What did the queen do to infuriate the king and how was she punished? Esther 1:9-12.

Answer: The queen disobeyed the king's order and was banished from his presence.

This king loved to party! He was a party animal. He held a feast for his officials and servants and when that feast was over, he held another that lasted seven days. When his heart was "merry with wine", (i.e. drunk) he sent his eunuchs to bring the queen before his guest but she ignored his royal summons and refused to go to him (after all she was having her own party with her friends). The king then called a meeting with his officials (who were also his close friends) and they suggested that she should be banished.
Esther 1: 3-9, 12-19.
3. Why were the king's high ranking officials so anxious to promptly and publicly punish the queen? Esther 1: 16-20.

Answer: They were afraid that all noble wives would follow in the queen's footsteps.

Memucan told the king that the queen had not only disrespected him but she had done so to all men in his provinces. He said that all wives would hear of the queen's refusal to come to him and they would think that they could do the same to their husbands.

Therefore he advised the king to send out a royal decree immediately, to let the people know of his punishment for the queen and so stop all wives from creating anarchy in his kingdom. Esther 1:16-20.
4. Now, this is how Esther came into the picture. When the wrath of the king had subsided, he began missing the queen and so it was suggested to him that beautiful young virgins should be brought to his harem and one of them should be chosen by him, to replace the queen. Who made these suggestions to the king? Esther 2:1-4.

Answer: The king's servants

The king was brooding over his banished queen and so, to cheer him up, the suggestion to go in search of a new queen was made. His staff searched for the most beautiful girls in the country and sent them all to Shushan where the king lived. The king's servants made the suggestion. Esther 2:1-4.
5. As was suggested, many young virgins were rounded up, including Esther, and taken to the king's harem. What was the name of the eunuch in whose custody they were placed? Esther 2:3.

Answer: Hegai

Esther 2:8-9 states that Hegai, the king's eunuch, was in charge of the harem and therefore was in charge of Esther and the other girls. He became rather fond of Esther and soon moved her to the best place in the house of the women and was a great influence to her.
6. As the custom was, beauty treatments with perfumes and herbs were given to each of the girls, in preparation for them to go before the king. How many months of beauty preparation did it take to make them worthy to go into the king's presence? Esther 2:12.

Answer: 12

Esther 2:12 states that each young woman's turn came to go before the king, after she had received six months' preparation with oil of myrrh and six months' with perfumes. Wow!
7. Out of all the girls who were vying for the title of "Queen," the king chose Esther. Upon her head he placed a crown and gave her many gifts. What else did the king give to the new queen? Esther 2:17-18.

Answer: A feast called "The feast of Esther"

Esther was taken to the king's palace and the king loved her more than all the other girls. He placed the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. He gave her a feast called the Feast of Esther and a holiday in her honour but it was not called Purim. Esther 2:17-18
8. Which of the below mentioned names belongs to the king who fell in love with Esther and swept her off her feet?

Answer: Ahasuerus

Esther 2:16-18 says that king Ahasuerus loved Esther and he showered her with gifts and other royal paraphernalia, which would of course sweep any young girl off of her feet.
9. Esther the new queen was not always known by this name. What did her friends and family members call her?

Answer: Hadassah

Esther was known as Hadassah. Mordecai changed her name to Esther, in order to hide her true identity from the king. Esther 2:5, 7.
10. It could be said that Esther was a credit to her people. From which people did she descend?

Answer: Jewish

Esther was a descendant of Kish, a Benjamite, who was taken away from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and taken captive to Shushan. Here, Esther was brought up by her Jewish relatives. She could be considered a credit to her people because she saved them from genocide.

She did so by confessing to the king that she was Jewish and that one of his high ranking officials was the one who wanted to destroy the Jews. The king then intervened and saved the queen and her people. Esther 8:4-7; 2:5-7.
11. What was the name of Esther's father and what was the name of her cousin who raised her, after the death of her parents? Esther 2: 5-17.

Answer: Abihail; Mordecai was her cousin

Abihail was the father of Esther, and Mordecai, her cousin, raised her after the death of her parents. He obviously was a big influence to her and he trained her well. She was obedient to him and as a result, she saved her people from genocide. Esther 2:5-17.
12. This man hated Esther's cousin and built a gallows for him to be hanged upon, but his plans boomeranged and he was hanged upon it. What was the name of this man and his wife? Esther 7: 9-10 and 5:10.

Answer: Haman and Zeresh

Esther's cousin did not pay homage to Haman and he was filled with wrath. At the advice of his wife Zeresh, he had a gallows built to destroy his enemy, but instead he was hanged on it himself for trying to seduce the queen. Esther 3:5-6; 7:8-10.
13. As a result of Esther's petition to the king, her people were saved from certain death and every year since then, a holiday is celebrated. What is the name of this celebration? Esther 9:20-26.

Answer: Purim

Haman cast Pur (ie, he cast lots) to find out the best time to destroy the Jews but they were spared from his plan of annihilation and the name "Purim" was given to their celebration. This name was given to remind them of the day Haman cast Pur to destroy them. Esther 9:20-26.
14. In the New King James Version of the Bible, how many times is the name of God mentioned in the book of Esther?
