Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hard times came upon a Biblical couple when they had to leave their beautiful garden home as a result of their disobedience. In which Old Testament book is their story chronicled?

Answer: Genesis

The first scriptural couple is Adam and Eve. According to Genesis chapter 3 Adam and Eve ate from the tree which was in the midst of the garden. In doing so they disobeyed God's explicit command. As a result they were to experience hard times and eventually die. Eve would conceive in sorrow and Adam would rule over her. (Gen.3:16) The earth was cursed for Adam's sake and in the sweat of his brow he would eat bread. (Gen.3:17-18)
2. Losing a child is always painful. Which ruler was hard hit when his firstborn died at midnight?

Answer: Pharaoh

Exodus 12 records the final plague that fell upon the Egyptians when Pharaoh refused to let God's people go. The Passover meal was eaten and verses 29-33 state that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn of the land of Egypt from the firstborn of the Pharaoh that sat upon the throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon and all the firstborn of cattle. Hard times indeed. Pharaoh rose up and sent Moses and the children of Israel away.
3. Samson's love for Delilah caused him to experience some hard times. Where was this lady that he loved so dearly from?

Answer: Sorek

Samson seemed to keep falling in love with the wrong women. First it was a whore from Gaza. He got away from trouble there and later found himself loving Delilah who lived in the valley of Sorek (Judges 16:4). His love for Delilah must have been great because he told her the secret of where his great strength lay.

As soon as his seven locks were cut off the Philistines had power over him and put out his two eyes. Double trouble for Samson! Finally though by the end of the chapter Samson regained his strength.

He killed at his death more Philistines than he killed in his life, when he brought their temple crashing down on them.
4. After taking the ark of God from the Israelites the Philistines in Ashdod began having hard times so they sent the ark to Gath. What hard times did the men of Gath begin to experience?

Answer: They had emerods in their secret parts.

When the ark of God was taken to Ashdod by the Philistines they put it in the house of their god, Dagon. Dagon was mutilated and only the stump was left.(I Sam.5:1-4) The people of Ashdod experienced heavy destruction and emerods came upon them. When the ark was sent to Gath there was great destruction also and the men were struck with emerods in their secret parts. (vs 6-8).

According to the King James Dictionary emerods are tumours or hemorrhoids. Smith's Bible Dictionary suggests that probably they were hemorrhoidal tumours or bleeding piles.
5. A certain widow who was experiencing hard times because of a famine shared what she thought was the last meal with God's prophet in a certain place. Who was the prophet and in which land did this take place?

Answer: The prophet was Elijah and the incident occurred in Zarephath.

The widow of Zarephath was preparing what was to be the last morsel she would eat with her son before they starved to death. It was at this precise moment that Elijah the Tishbite turned up to request a drink of water and a little cake. Need I tell you that when she followed Elijah's instruction her hard times were transformed into good times? (Read I Kings 17 and be blessed).
6. We all know the story of Job who had some really hard times but do you know which one of these men was not listed as one of his friends?

Answer: Eliakim

Jobs friends were Eliphaz the Temanite (Job 15:1), Bildad the Shuhite (Job 18:1 and Zophar the Naamathite (Job 20:1). Eliakim is mentioned in I Kings 18:18. He is a son of Hilkiah and master of Hezekiah's household. I encourage you to read through the book of Job. It is very interesting and encouraging.
7. Nebuchadnezzar dreamed of the hard times that would befall him if he failed to acknowledge God. How much time elapsed between his dream and its fulfillment?

Answer: 12 months

According to Daniel 4 Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that made him afraid. He saw a tree that grew strong reaching unto heaven and providing food and shelter for the beasts and the fowls. However a holy one from heaven declared that it was to be cut down and its stump should be left in the earth with a band of iron and brass to be wet with the dew of heaven.

The dream was interpreted by Daniel who told him of the hard times he would have to endure if he did not break off his sins. Dan.4:29-30 states that at the end of 12 months Nebuchadnezzar walked in the palace of kingdom of Babylon and said "is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honour of my majesty?" In that same hour Nebuchadnezzar lost his sanity and was driven out to eat grass as oxen.

His body became wet with the dew of heaven and his hair grew like eagles' feathers and his nails like bird's claws. Talk about hard times. Nebuchadnezzar learnt from this experience and gave honour to God. (Daniel 4)
8. It must be hard for any man who has to marry a whore. Which of the minor prophets might have had some hard times when he married a whore?

Answer: Hosea

Hosea 1:2 tells us that Hosea was instructed by God to take unto himself a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms because of the people's departure from the Lord. Hosea married Gomer who was the daughter of Diblaim. Hosea's life with his unfaithful wife who God commanded him to love (Hosea 3:1) was to be an object lesson through which Israel could see God's love for them in spite of their unfaithfulness.
9. As Nehemiah laboured to rebuild Jerusalem some men tried to make it hard for him. Which of these was NOT one of the troublemakers?

Answer: Hanani

While Nehemiah laboured to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem Sanballat and Tobiah tried to find ways to make it difficult for him. (Neh. 4:1-8) Shemaiah was hired by these men to pronounce a prophecy against Nehemiah to make him afraid so that he could bring an evil report against him. (Neh. 6:10-13) On the other hand Hanani was Nehemiah's brother who he trusted to give charge over Jerusalem. (Neh. 7:2)
10. Let's end this quiz with a female. Which woman's hard times began when she was sent to her brother's house to dress his meat?

Answer: Tamar

Amnon the son of King David loved his sister Tamar who was a virgin. He pretended to be sick and asked King David to allow her to come to his house to make him some cakes so that he could eat at her hand. As soon as the opportunity arose Amnon forced her and lay with her.

After his evil act he hated her more than he had loved her before. Tamar was sent out from him a ruined woman to remain desolate in the house of her brother Absalom. (II Sam.13:1-20)
