Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here are four statements about Sarah. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Sarah was extremely young when she gave birth to Isaac.

Sarah was anything but extremely young when she gave birth to Isaac. According to Scripture, Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when she became pregnant. It might be difficult for some to believe, but according to Genesis 17:17, it's true. When Abraham heard the pronouncement of Sarah's impending pregnancy from God, he couldn't believe it either. The verse, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, 'Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?'"

Genesis 17:15, in the NKJV, tells of God giving Sarai her new name: "Then God said to Abraham, 'As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.'"

According to Genesis 20:12, Sarah and Abraham had the same father, Terah. However, they had different mothers. In other words, Sarah was Abraham's half sister.

Genesis 11:27-29, in the NKJV, gives Abram's lineage: "This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah."

According to Scripture, Sarah was guilty of lying directly to God. Scripture states Sarah started laughing when she overheard the LORD tell her husband Abraham that she would give birth to a son, even though she was "well advanced in age". When the LORD rebuked Sarah for laughing, she denied she had done such a thing.

Genesis 18:10-15 gives this account in the NKJV Bible: "And He said, 'I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.' (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, 'After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?' And the LORD said to Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.' But Sarah denied it, saying, 'I did not laugh,' for she was afraid.
And He said, 'No, but you did laugh!'"
2. Here are four statements about Rebekah. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Rebekah stole the household gods of her father.

Rachel is the one involved in the theft of the household gods of her father, not Rebekah. The unusual story is told in the 31st chapter of Genesis.

Genesis 24:29 states Rebekah was the sister of Laban. In the 29th chapter of Genesis, Laban is identified as the father of Rachel and Leah. As a result, Rebekah is the aunt of Laban's two daughters who are arguably the best-known sisters in the Bible.

While the name Deborah is usually associated with the dynamic female judge and prophetess who led Israel, Rebekah's nurse also had the same name. According to Genesis 35:8, Rebekah's nurse died and was buried under an oak tree outside Bethel. Scripture states the tree was named Allon Bakuth. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, Allon Bakuth means 'oak of weeping'.

Genesis 25 tells of Rebekah giving birth to the first set of twins in the Bible. Their names were Esau and Jacob. Rebekah was married to Isaac.
3. Here are four statements about Leah. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Leah is the only woman in Genesis credited with interpreting dreams.

There is no indication Leah was able to interpret dreams. In fact, the only person in the book of Genesis credited with being able to interpret dreams was Joseph, as per the 37th, 40th and 41st chapters.

Laban was Leah's father, as per the 29th chapter of Genesis. Laban was also the father of Rachel and his two daughters are arguably the best-known sisters in the Bible. They were both wives of Jacob. Their children formed part of the original Twelve Tribes of Israel.

Jacob was basically tricked into marrying Leah and she lived in a marriage with little or no love. It's a bit of a long story. Laban got fourteen years of labor out of Jacob, largely by tricking him. Jacob agreed to work for seven years for Laban if he could marry his younger daughter Rachel. However, at the end of seven years, Laban gave Jacob his older daughter Leah in marriage, saying "it is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one." So, Jacob agreed to work an additional seven years for Rachel's hand.

Scripture indicates Leah and Rachel were often bickering. Leah would bear male children for Jacob thinking it would make him love her while Rachel was barren, according to Genesis 29. Nothing seemed to change, however.
4. Here are four statements about Rachel. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Rachel was unattractive.

To the contrary, Rachel was extremely attractive, with Genesis 29:17 stating she was "beautiful of form and appearance."

The romance of Jacob and Rachel was a case of kissing cousins. Jacob's mother Rebekah was the sister of Rachel's father Laban, as per the 29th chapter of Genesis.

According to Genesis 30:3, Rachel gave permission to her husband to sleep with her maidservant Bilhah so she could bear children for her. Rachel wanted to build a family through her servant. According to Genesis 35:25, Bilhah gave birth to two boys, Dan and Naphtali.

Rachel was the mother of Joseph and Benjamin and she died giving birth to Benjamin, as per Genesis 35.
5. Here are four statements about Hagar. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Hagar had a sister named Haggith.

There is no indication in Scripture that Hagar had a sister or a brother. It's likely she had siblings, but Scripture doesn't indicate one way or another. For the record, Haggith was a wife of David and the mother of Adonijah, as per 2 Samuel 3:4.

According to Genesis 16:1, Hagar was a servant of Sarai, who would later become known as Sarah. Sarai, of course, was the wife of Abram, who would later become known as Abraham. The verse also states Hagar was Egyptian.

Abraham's wife was unable to conceive so she gave him Hagar to sleep with, so that Hagar would bear him children. Genesis 16:3, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan." The next verse reports Hagar conceived. According to Genesis 16:15, Hagar gave birth to a son who was named Ishmael by Abram. According to Christiananswers.net, Ishmael means God hears or God will hear.

It's a bit of a long story, but things changed dramatically after Sarai granted permission to Abram to sleep with Hagar. According to the 16th chapter of Genesis, after Hagar became pregnant she despised Sarai.

Genesis 16:5-6 states: "Then Sarai said to Abram, 'My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The Lord judge between you and me.' So Abram said to Sarai, 'Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.' And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence."

After fleeing, an Angel of the LORD appeared before Hagar and told her the child she would give birth to would be called Ishmael and that she should return and submit to Sarai.
6. Here are four statements about Zilpah. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Reuben committed adultery with her.

To the contrary, Reuben committed adultery with Bilhah, not Zilpah.

Zilpah was Leah's handmaiden and she granted permission to her husband Jacob to sleep with her to produce children, as per Genesis 30. The same chapter reports she was the mother of Gad and Asher.
7. Here are four statements about Miriam. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Miriam struck a rock with a rod in the desert and water gushed out of it.

There is no mention in Scripture about Miriam striking a rock in the desert and water gushing out of it. To the contrary, Genesis 17:1-7 tells of Moses performing the miracle.

Miriam is described as a prophetess, as per Exodus 15:20. Other woman in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, to have such a distinction are Deborah, the dynamic female judge of Israel (Judges 4:4), and the wife of Isaiah (Isaiah 8:3).

Miriam is perhaps best known for leading the Israelite women in a victory song after the Egyptian army drowned in the Red Sea. The song of Miriam appears in Exodus 15:20-21, just after the song of Moses. Exodus 15:20-21, in the NKJV, states: "Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them:
'Sing to the LORD,
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and its rider
He has thrown into the sea!'"

According to Scripture, the Egyptian army drowned when the LORD parted the Red Sea enabling the Israelites to make an exodus out of Egypt while on a 40-year journey to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. After the Israelites had crossed over, the Red Sea closed in on the Egyptian army which was in pursuit, as per the 14th chapter of Exodus.

Miriam was afflicted with leprosy, but ended up being cured and re-instated into the Israelite camp. According to Scripture, the grumbling about her brother Moses' selection of an Ethiopian woman as his wife caused serious problems for Miriam. (This even though Aaron was also grumbling.) Numbers 12:5 tells of Miriam and Aaron stepping forward and the LORD coming down in a pillar of cloud. When the pillar of the cloud had disappeared, Aaron noticed his sister Miriam was leprous and "as white as snow". After Moses pleaded to God to cure Miriam of her leprosy, she was healed and reinstated into the Israelite camp after a seven-day absence.
8. Here are four statements about Bilhah. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: She was a distant cousin of Hagar.

There is no mention in Scripture about Bilhah's immediate family, let alone details about her extended family.

According to Genesis 30, Bilhah was the handmaiden of Rachel, who gave permission to Jacob to sleep with her to produce children. According to Genesis 35:25, Jacob and Bilhah were the parents of Dan and Naphtali.
9. Here are four statements about Potiphar's wife. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: She was dealt with harshly by Joseph after he ascended to power.

There is no mention in Scripture about Potiphar's wife after she falsely accused Joseph of attempted rape and had him thrown in prison. She is mentioned in only Genesis 39:7-19 and no first name is given. The correct answer has to be "She was dealt with harshly by Joseph after he ascended to power'.

According to Genesis 39, Potiphar's wife had "longing eyes" for Joseph who is described as "handsome in form and appearance." Scripture states she attempted to seduce Joseph and when she was spurned, she accused him of attempted rape and he was thrown into prison.
10. Here are four statements about Tamar. Which one is incorrect?

Answer: Tamar was blessed with a lovely singing voice.

There is no indication in Scripture about Tamar being blessed with a lovely singing voice. It's possible, but Scripture doesn't indicate one way or the other.

Genesis 38 does state her first two husbands -- Er and Onan -- were struck dead by the LORD due to their evil ways. The same chapter tells of Tamar pretending to be a prostitute to become impregnated by her father-in-law Judah. The chapter goes on to tell of Tamar giving birth to twins, Perez and Zerah.
