Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Especially appropriate to Ash Wednesday, what is a "memento mori" in a Christian context?

Answer: a reminder of one's mortality

The Latin aphorism "memento mori" can be translated "Remember that you will die!" It has been used by others but is particularly common as a theme in Christianity. On Ash Wednesday, when ashes are smudged on the foreheads of the penitent, the common words of administration are "Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return." This sentence is itself a "memento mori", as are the many works of Christian art depicting skulls, skeletons, the Dance of Death, flowers losing their petals, hourglasses, and candles being snuffed. French composer Camille Saint-Saëns' orchestral tone poem "Danse Macabre" (Op. 40) is based on the Dance of Death. Biblical warrant for this emphasis is located in Ecclesiasticus 7:40 "In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin" (Douay-Rheims Bible).

2. In the Hindu pantheon, which four-armed god, whose name means 'The Auspicious One' and who is often depicted dancing, is also known as 'the Destroyer'?

Answer: Shiva

In Hinduism, three great gods represent aspects of the Supreme Being: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. There is great variation within Hinduism; however, Shiva is one of the prominently worshipped Hindu deities as one who has power to bless as well as to destroy or change. If not shown dancing, Shiva is usually depicted in deep meditation.

3. Which of the following are practiced by faithful members of the Jehovah's Witnesses?

Answer: preaching door-to-door

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that they have a responsibility to spread the Word of God as they understand it and act on this belief by going door-to-door to share their faith. They do not keep Christmas nor Easter nor even celebrate their own birthdays, as they believe all of these to have pagan origins.

They are unwilling to serve in the military which has led to their imprisonment in China, some Islamic countries, Russia, Canada, the United States and Germany. Their theology interprets Scripture to prohibit blood transfusion and they are expected to die rather than accept a transfusion themselves.

4. What do Christians usually understand by the word 'Trinity'?

Answer: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

The doctrine of the Trinity can be a contentious one because nowhere is the concept explicitly laid down in the Bible. The present conventional understanding of the Trinity was established at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. There it was laid down that God exists as 'one substance' but as three distinct persons.

5. Three of the following biblical characters were famous Old Testament shepherds while the fourth was a New Testament tent maker. Which one is this famous convert to Christianity?

Answer: Paul

Paul the Apostle (initially Saul of Tarsus) was a tent maker who became an extreme anti-Christian zealot who tried to destroy the early church and persecuted those who followed Christ. His dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, where he met the resurrected Jesus, who asked him why he was persecuting him, changed his entire life. Paul became a devout missionary who spread the gospel throughout Europe and Asia Minor. Of the 27 books in the New Testament, thirteen are attributed to his name although it is believed that only seven were entirely authored by him; the other six being written by his followers using excerpts from his letters.

A large proportion of the Acts of the Apostles also deals with his life and teachings. Interestingly, his death is not recorded anywhere in the Bible.

6. What is the primary function of a rabbi in contemporary Judaism?

Answer: Teacher of Judaism

The word "Rabbi" means "teacher". A rabbi has very little actual legal authority over his congregation, although historically there have been times when rabbis were given a larger role in enforcing the laws, rather than just advising about them.

7. Which Evening Prayer did medieval Catholic monks attend to around sunset?

Answer: Vespers

The daily office for medieval monks started with Matins, followed by Lauds. Then there were Primes, Tierce, Sext (at noon) and Nones. At sunset the monks chanted Vespers and they concluded the day with Compline, just before going to sleep. These daily offices are still observed by many Catholic and Anglican monasteries and convents today.

8. In Hinduism, what's the name for the seven centers in the body through which the life force flows?

Answer: chakras

The Sanskrit word literally translates to wheel or disk. According to this philosophy, energy flows through the body from one center to the next like swirls of light. The seven major chakras, starting at the top of the head and extending down to the base of the spine, correspond to major glandular areas in western medicine. Many different forms of ancient healing practices, such as acupuncture and various meditational disciplines, are based on this idea. This is a surface explanation of a very complex concept. A good place to start is "The 7 Chakras for beginners" at mindbodygreen.com.

"Tandoori" is a style of cooking from the Tandoor region in India. "Prana" is the Hindu term for all life force.
