Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." - Genesis 3:15 God spoke these words when he discovered Adam and Eve had broken his command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. To whom was God speaking?

Answer: Serpent

Many believe this particular passage of scripture contains a promise that, from the seed of the woman, there would come a Messiah who would redeem mankind from the consequences of Adam's and Eve's disobedience. He would crush the head (power) of the serpent, a.k.a. Satan. Christians believe this promise was fulfilled by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
2. Why were Adam and Eve ashamed when they met God in the garden of Eden, after having eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?

Answer: They were naked

In a story of redemption, nakedness is often symbolic of man's sinful condition before a Holy God. The writer of the Book of Hebrews describes it this way:

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." - Hebrews 4:13
3. "The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them." - Genesis 3:2 What kind of skin were Adam and Eve's garments made from?

Answer: The Bible doesn't say

The Bible doesn't say, but in the original language the word for skin in this text is "or" which can be translated hide, leather or skin. Some believe this was a prelude to the animal or blood sacrifices that would later be required as sin offerings.

The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews taught, "In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." - Hebrews 9:22

Blood sacrifices are sometimes referred to as the scarlet thread running through the scriptures.
4. Who was the first man mentioned as offering an animal sacrifice?

Answer: Abel

"Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast." - Genesis 4:3-5

Some teach that Cain's offering was not acceptable because it didn't involve the shedding of blood. Since there is no mention of sin in connection with this offering, it is likely these were worship offerings and it was Cain's attitude that brought God's displeasure.
5. After the offering of the first born of a shepherd's flock early in the Bible, who was the next person to offer animal sacrifices in the book of Genesis?

Answer: Noah

"Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, 'I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.'" - Genesis 8:20,21

This is not only the first mention of an animal sacrifice since the time of Cain and Abel, but it is also the first mention of an altar being built to offer a sacrifice.
6. What man did God tell to leave his country and his family home? In return, God promised he would give him a new country and make him into a great nation.

Answer: Abram

"The LORD had said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.'" Genesis 12:1-3

Abram was the first to be called a Hebrew. Later God changed his name to Abraham and the nation of Israel was formed from his descendants through his son Isaac.
7. What son of Abraham would be known as the child of promise?

Answer: Isaac

Abraham had several sons but it was the son of his wife Sarah that was promised by God. Sarah was 90 and Abraham 100 before the promise was fulfilled. Christians believe that it would be through Isaac's descendants that the Messiah would come and bring about the fulfillment of God's plan of redemption.
8. Who or what was Abraham asked to sacrifice to test his faith?

Answer: Isaac

"Then God said, 'Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.'" - Genesis 22:2

Just as Abraham was about to slay his son, the angel of the Lord told him not to slay Isaac and God provided a ram for the offering.

This is believed by Christians to be a picture pointing to the time when God would offer his only son Jesus as a sacrifice for the sin of the world.
9. God provided a ram as a substitute sacrifice for Abraham. This may be seen as a representation of what New Testament writers refer to as the The Lamb of God. In the New Testament, who or what is called the Lamb of God?

Answer: Jesus Christ

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!'" - John 1:29

Throughout Israel's history lambs were used as offerings for sin. The Lamb of God would not only be offered for the sin of Israel, Christians believe, but for the sin of the whole world.
10. Who was the first priest recorded to have made an offering?

Answer: Melchizedek

"Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, 'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.' Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything." - Genesis 14:18-20

Melchizedek is also seen as a representation of the Priesthood of Christ. Christ as the Lamb of God fulfilled the animal sacrifices of the old covenant and replaced them with the bread and wine of the new covenant during the last supper.

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'" - Matthew 26:26,28
