Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does "Genesis" mean?

Answer: Beginning

Genesis is the first book in the Bible. The first verse, Genesis 1:1, says "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth".
2. In Genesis 2:13, what country does the Gihon River surround?

Answer: Ethiopia

Genesis 2:13 "And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia."
3. What was the name of Cain's son?

Answer: Enoch

Genesis 4:17 "And Cain knew his wife: and she conceived and bare Enoch: and he builded a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch."
4. What are the dimensions of the ark that God commands Noah to build?

Answer: 300 cubits x 50 cubits x 30 cubits

Genesis 6:15 "And there is the fashion which thou shalt make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits and the height of it thirty cubits."

A cubit is about 17-22 inches. It was originally based on the length of the arm from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow.
5. Who is the "father of Canaan"?

Answer: Ham

Ham, Shem, and Japeth were Noah's three sons.

Genesis 9:18 "And the son of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem and Ham and Japeth and Ham is the father of Canaan."
6. How many sons did Jacob have by Rachel?

Answer: 2

Genesis 35:24 "The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin."

Jacob had a total of twelve sons by four women. The names were Reuben, Simeon, and Levi, Issachar, Asher and Dan, Zebulun, Naphtali, Gad, Judah, Joseph and Benjamin. I learned their names from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", a musical by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
7. Joseph put a silver cup in one of his brothers' sacks. Which one?

Answer: Benjamin's sack

Genesis 44:12 "And he [Joseph] searched and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack."
8. Who is traditionally credited with writing the book of Genesis?

Answer: Moses

Moses is believed to have written the first five books of the Bible, which are also known as the Pentateuch. They also form the Jewish Holy Book which is called the Torah. Both Jews and Christians firmly believe that the Bible was inspired by the Spirit of God, who caused certain men to write it down.
9. Fill in the blank from Genesis 49:2 (KJV): "Gather yourself together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob, and hearken unto __________________ your father."

Answer: Israel

Many people in the Bible have a birthname and then a name that God gave them as well. For example Abraham's name is also Abram. In this passage, Jacob is about to make predictions about what will befall his sons and their descendants.
10. In the book of Genesis, how old was Joseph when he died?

Answer: 110 years old

Genesis 50:26 "So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt."
