Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first word in the Book of Hebrews in the King James Version?

Answer: God

It says in Hebrews 1:1, "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets."

It is unknown who wrote the book of "Hebrews"; early Bible scholars tended to think it was Paul. However, unlike Paul's other letters, he does not mention himself in this epistle.
2. Complete this Bible verse from Hebrews 2:18. "For in that he himself hath suffered being ___________ he is able to succour them that are ___________. What is the missing word in the King James Version?

Answer: tempted

I had to look up the word "succour" and I found that it means help.

This Bible verse is a reference to when Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days and was tempted by Satan during that time.
3. To what does Hebrews 4:12 compare the Word of God?

Answer: a two-edged sword

It says in Hebrews 4:12, "For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

This verse is very visual as it shows God's word and the strength it possesses.
4. In Hebrews 6:9 (King James Version), the author speaks of better things that accompany what?

Answer: salvation

It says in Hebrews 6:9, "But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak."

In the beliefs of many Christians, someone obtains salvation when he or she believes that Christ lived a perfect life, died for his or her sins on a cross, was buried for three days and then rose again on the third day. It is generally taught that people who accept this gift of salvation will live forever in Heaven with Jesus one day.
5. According to Hebrews 8:11 (King James Version), "all shall know" God, from the what to the what?

Answer: least to the greatest

It says in Hebrews 8:11, "And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother saying, know the Lord; for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest."

This can be compared to the Old Testament, when only the Jews were considered God's people. The New Testament teaches that, after Christ came, both Jews and Gentiles could know God.
6. What is it "appointed ... once to" happen to all mankind according to verse 9:27 (King James Version)?

Answer: to die

It says in Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this comes the judgement."

This verse simply says we're all gonna die eventually. But it's not over there, most Christians believe, because one day everyone has to sit at the throne of God and be judged.
7. According to Hebrews 10:10, how many times must Christ be crucified for all people to be saved?

Answer: once

It says in Hebrews 10:10, "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

The Old Testament describes giving a sacrifice once a year to make up for the people's sins. Most Christians believe that Christ was the ultimate sacrifice: once he died on the cross and rose again, the debt (of sin) was paid for in full.
8. Chapter 11 of Hebrews is commonly known as the "Faith Chapter", as it deals with the men of faith in the Bible. What is the definition of "faith" according to this chapter in the King James Version?

Answer: The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

It says in Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

The word "hope" in this verse is not like "I hope I get a new bike for Christmas", where one does not know but really wants it. This hope is more like trusting that what you hope for is coming; the verse could say, "of things expected".
9. How does the author describe God at the end of chapter 12 in the King James Version?

Answer: a consuming fire

It says in Hebrews 13:29, "For our God is a consuming fire."

This verse says that even though God loves, he also, like, fire destroys ... and what he destroys is sin (i.e. evil). One could cross-reference this verse with Matthew 12:30a, which states, "He that is not with me is against me."
10. How is marriage described in chapter 13 (King James Version)?

Answer: honorable

It says in Hebrews 13:4, "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge."

This verse may speak of waiting until marriage to have sex when it says "the bed undefiled."
