Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. David
Answer: Adultery
David was chosen by God at a young age to one day lead the Israelites as their king. Despite a close relationship with God, David succumbed to temptation when he saw the wife of one of his soldiers bathing on the terrace of their house. Having committed adultery with her, he then had her husband killed by placing him on the front line during the battle.
2. Moses
Answer: Murder
Moses was a Hebrew who was brought up by the daughter of the Pharaoh. When he once happened to see an Egyptian hitting and mistreating a fellow Hebrew, he was unable to control his rage and ended up killing the Egyptian. The fear of being caught then led him to run away and settle in a distant land, from where God called him to lead the Israelites to freedom.
3. Rachel
Answer: Theft
When Jacob was leaving Laban's house along with his two wives, children and other possessions, Rachel stole her father's household idols. Jacob was unaware of this theft. Later, when Laban caught up with the party and demanded a search to locate the idols, Rachel claimed to be menstruating and hid the idols under her clothing.
4. Laban
Answer: Deception
Laban was the uncle of Jacob. When Jacob went to live with him, he fell in love with his younger daughter Rachel. Jacob asked for Rachel's hand in marriage and Laban promised it to him if he worked for him for seven years. At the end of seven years, Laban tricked Jacob by getting him married to his older daughter Leah instead. Jacob had to then work another seven years until he was finally allowed to marry Rachel.
5. Thomas
Answer: Doubt
The women who were among the first to see Jesus after he had risen from the dead returned to the other disciples and shared with them the good news of the resurrection. The apostle Thomas, however, refused to believe them and said he would believe in the resurrection only after seeing the nail-pierced hands of Jesus. As a result, Thomas has been widely known as 'Doubting Thomas'.
6. Adam
Answer: Disobedience
Adam and Eve committed the first sin among mankind when they explicitly disobeyed God's instructions, and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the only one in the Garden of Eden that they were forbidden to eat from. As a result, they had to leave the Garden of Eden.
7. Samaritan woman at the well
Answer: Adultery
According to an account in the Gospel of John, Jesus was travelling through the region of Samaria when he came upon Jacob's well and sat by it. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, he requested her to give him a drink. He told her that he knew about her life and the different men she had had relationships with before preaching the good news to her.
She then called out to all the people from her village to come and hear the word of Jesus.
8. Zechariah
Answer: Doubt
Zechariah was a priest and was married to Elizabeth who happened to be the cousin of Mary. When Zechariah was ministering at the altar of incense, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and told him that he and Elizabeth would have a son whom they were to name John. Gabriel also said that John would prepare the way for the Messiah. Since Elizabeth was of an advanced age and had been barren, Zechariah found it hard to believe this.
As a result, he was rendered mute until the birth of his son.
9. Cain
Answer: Murder
Cain was the firstborn son of Adam and Eve, and worked as a farmer. His younger brother Abel was a shepherd. Cain brought fruits and vegetables from his produce as offerings to God while Abel brought new born lambs. God approved of Abel's offering over Cain's, because of which Cain was driven to anger.
He became jealous of his brother and killed him, becoming the first murderer in the Bible.
10. Jacob
Answer: Deception
Isaac and Rebekah had twin sons - Esau and Jacob, with Esau being the elder of the two. When Isaac grew old, he told his older son Esau to cook him a meat stew and then come and seek his blessings as the firstborn son. Rebekah overheard this and helped Jacob, the son she favoured, trick Isaac.
She helped him cook the stew Isaac liked and then covered his hands with the hide of animals so that they appeared hairy like Esau's. Isaac was thus tricked into giving his younger son the blessing that was due to his firstborn.
