Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You probably know that Ali (A.S.) was born in Mecca. Where exactly in Mecca was he born?

Answer: Inside the Ka'aba

None of Abu-Talib's children were born in his house. As for the Town Hall, nothing like that existed. All decisions were made in front of the Ka'aba.
2. In which year was Ali (A.S.) born?

Answer: 601 AD

Ali was born in 601 AD, about 22 years BH (Before Hijra).
3. How was Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) related to Ali (A.S.)?

Answer: First Cousins

Ali (A.S.) was the son of Abu Talib, who was Mohammed's (P.B.U.H.) father's younger brother. Mohammed's (P.B.U.H.) father died before his birth and he was brought-up by his uncle, Abu Talib. In turn, he later raised his uncle's son.
4. What was the age difference between Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) and Ali (A.S.)?

Answer: 30 yrs

5. After Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) and the other Muslims migrated to Medina, he declared every Meccan a brother of every Medinan. Who did he declare to be Ali's (A.S.) brother?

Answer: Himself

He said to Ali, 'O Ali, you are my brother in this world and the after-world,' and embraced him. Abu Bakar was declared Omar's brother and the other two were revered companions of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) and were declared brothers of each other. Note: This brotherhood was created because the Meccans immigrants were poor and needed support.

Their Medinan brothers were supposed to help them economically. Even so, some Meccans who were able to bring some money with them from Mecca were made brothers of other poor Meccans.
6. Ali (A.S.) was the commander of the Muslim army in the Battle of Bad'ar. Who was the commander of the Meccan army?

Answer: Abu Jahal

The Muslim army, consisting of 313 ragged, poorly-armed, ill-trained footmen, defeated the 1000 well-equipped Meccan armmy, two-thirds of which consisted of cavalry. The Meccans lost 70 men. Ali (A.S.) was reported to have killed 35 of them. Abu Sufyan became the Meccan leader after Abu Jahal was killed during the battle. Mauwiyah was Abu Sufyan's son and Walid was Abu Sufyan's brother-in-law and was killed by Ali (A.S.) during the battle.
7. Who did Ali (A.S.) kill in the Battle of the Trench?

Answer: Amru bin Abd Wad

Amru bin Abd Wad was known as the Lion of Persia. He was one of the strongest and bravest men of his time. He was supposed to be a match for 500 armoured soldiers at once. During the Battle of the Trench, a trench was dug around Medina to defend it from the advancing Meccan army. Amru was the one who crossed the trench and challenged the Muslims to send their bravest man to fight him. Ali (A.S.) volunteered and walked up to him without any protective items except his sword.

He attacked Amru and cut the warrior's entire body in half. Abu Sufyan was the leader of the Meccans after Abu Jahal died. Mauwiyah was Abu Sufyan's son, and Suhail was the person sent by the Meccans to negotiate for them during the Peace Treaty of Hudaibiyah.
8. Who was Ali (A.S.) married to?

Answer: Fatima

Fatima was the daughter of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.). She was born in Mecca in 7 years BH (Before Hijra). The rest were all Mohammed's wives.
9. Ali was the fourth caliph of Islam, in the reckoning of Sunnis. Who were the first, second and third?

Answer: Abu Bakar, Umar, Uthman

The others were all revered companions of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.). Shi'ites do not consider them as caliphs, and describe Ali as the first caliph. This disagreement over the line of succession following the death of Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) is one of the main differences between these two branches of Islam.
10. Ali (A.S.) was assassinated by _________________.

Answer: Ibn-e-Muljim

Mauwiyah and Abu Sufyan were arch-enemies of Ali (A.S.) although were not involved in his death. As for Hajjaj, he was a caliph during the early eighth century.
