Ibn Ishaq (d. ca. 761), an early Islamic biographer, stated about Amina's pregnancy: "While she was carrying the child in her womb she saw a light issue from her which illuminated even the castles of Busra in Syria." ("Life of Muhammad," Translated by Michael Edwardes, 2003). Ibn Ishaq also mentions that Amina told others that she heard a voice speak to her, proclaiming that her child should be called Muhammad and that he would be a leader of the people.

Khadijah was an outstanding woman of her time. She was independently wealthy after being widowed twice. In effect, she was a merchant, though she hired others--including the Prophet--to do her trading for her. She was also a woman who took personal matters into her own hands: she proposed marriage to a man who was at least 15 years her junior! Khadijah and the Prophet had a very successful marriage. The angel Gabriel visited the Prophet in the cave of Hira. The angel commanded him to read three times, and each time the Prophet replied, "I do not know how to read." The angel then physically overwhelmed the Prophet. After the initial meeting with Gabriel, the Prophet's heart was beating wildly, and he feared that he had become possessed by a devil or genie. He went to Khadijah and begged, "Cover me! Cover me!" (al-Bukhari, I, 3).

The Prophet's call to worship one god was a radical departure from the idol worship among the Arab tribes. The tribal elders viewed the Prophet and his companions as the destroyers of their traditions and culture. The Prophet's wife, Aisha, had been traveling with the Prophet and his army. She owned an onyx necklace that held great sentimental value for her. As the army proceeded their march in the darkness, her necklace fell to the ground. She was very upset and could not find it in the black night.

The Prophet, disregarding the army's extreme annoyance, commanded an overnight halt so that his wife could be relieved. (Martin Lings, "Muhammad," 1983).

Companions, wives, and children all left behind stories of the frugal circumstances of life with the Prophet. Since the new Muslims were persecuted by most of their tribal relatives, they had a difficult time conducting business, selling goods, or trading.

Moreover, the Prophet and his companions were so focused on devotion to God that they had little time for the niceties of acquiring wealth. In addition to their reduced opportunities, the Prophet was noted for giving away most of his food and belongings to any needy person who surfaced at his door. During the Prophet's day, slavery was a common institution in Arabia, as well as around the world. The Prophet, however, often set an example by freeing his captives and slaves. The Prophet had once told his wife Khadijah that God sent her special greetings of peace. He also told his other wife Aisha that she would remain his wife in Paradise. As tradition has it, he proclaimed to his daughter Fatima, "Thou art the highest of the women of Paradise, excepting only the Virgin Mary" (Ahmad Ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal, III, 64).

The mother of Jesus, therefore, is a pivotal figure in Islam.

All of the statements, in essence, were recorded as being uttered by the Prophet during his final days. While leading a prayer at his mosque, he shared a sermon in which he said that a slave, among God's slaves, was given the choice between the world and being with God.

He referred, of course, to himself. He also expressed to Aisha that he wished she would die before him, so that he could pray to God for her soul, and perform her final rites. Similarly, once he became weak with his fatal illness, he commanded that his dear friend Abu Bakr lead the prayers.

His final words, though, according to Aisha were: "O God, with the supreme communion..." (Martin Lings, "Muhammad," 1983).
