Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis, what river consists of pure gold, rare perfume, and precious stones?

Answer: Pishon

Following the seven days of creation, God formed man using the dust of the ground and the breath of life. God also created the Garden of Eden and the tree of life. In order for man and garden to survive, however, God determined that four headwaters were necessary. One of these headwaters was filled with mineral wealth:

"The first river is the Pishon; it flows round the country of Havilah. (Pure gold is found there and also rare perfume and precious stones.)" (Genesis 2.11-12)
2. Who was the first man recorded in Genesis as planting a vineyard?

Answer: Noah

The Great Flood has been considered by some to be one of the greatest disasters in the history of planet earth. Noah's success in rescuing the many animals of the earth and housing them on the ark was considered by God to be the covenant between God, Noah, and the earth's living creatures. Following this great triumph by Noah, he had three children named Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and he planted the first vineyard as well. Noah, however, became subject to the temptation of wine and drunkenness:

"Noah, who was a farmer, was the first man to plant a vineyard. After he drank some of the wine, he became drunk, took off his clothes, and lay naked in his tent." (Genesis 9.20-21)
3. Genesis 11.10-26 discusses the descendents of Shem. The final descendent of Shem discussed within these passages is Terah. When Terah was 70 years old, he became the father of three children. What were their names?

Answer: Abram, Nahor, Haran

The ancestral lineage of Shem is as follows:
-Shem, father of Arphaxad
-Arphaxad, father of Shelah
-Shelah, father of Eber
-Eber, father of Peleg
-Peleg, father of Reu
-Reu, father of Serug
-Serug, father of Nahor
-Nahor, father of Terah

Terah, the last descendant in the line of Shem's ancestry, would go on to have three sons at an older age:

"After Terah was 70 years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran." (Genesis 11.26)
4. Which biblical character said: "Oh no! I would never do that! Only the one who had the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may go back safe and sound to your father"?

Answer: Joseph

This excerpt was taken from Genesis 44.17. Judah and his brothers had returned to Joseph's house after Benjamin had stolen the silver cup. The brothers believed that they should all be taken as Joseph's slaves for participating in the theft of the silver cup. Joseph kept to his word and only enslaved Benjamin, who was caught with the cup.
5. Prior to his death, where does Genesis record that Jacob requested to be buried?

Answer: in a cave with his fathers

"...Now that I am going to join my people in death, bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite..." (Genesis 49.29)

In this cave, Jacob would be buried with many other biblical characters including Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, as well as Leah.

Following his instructions to be buried in the cave at Ephron, Jacob lay on his bed with his feet up and did not suffer in taking his last breath.
6. According to God, which of the following was considered the "Sign of the Covenant" (Genesis 17:14)?

Answer: Circumcision

When Abraham was ninety-nine years old, God chose Abraham to be the father of many nations. God's covenant was to have all males under Abraham to be circumcised. All newborn males who were eight days of age, whether rich or poor, had to be circumcised under the covenant of God. Any male who was uncircumcised would be cut off from God and his people for breaking the covenant:

"Any male who had not been circumcised will no longer be considered one of my people, because he had not kept the covenant with me." (Genesis 17:14)
7. What fraction of his loot is Abram described in Genesis as giving to Melchizedek?

Answer: 1/10

After being blessed by Melchizedek for being victorious in his defeat of Chedorlaomer, Abram gave one tenth of all the loot he recovered on his quest.

In response, Melchizedek replied: "Keep the loot, but give me back all my people" (Genesis 14.21)

As Abraham had taken an oath in front of God, he could not accept the loot or any riches of another man. Abraham did not accept any of the riches back from the king.
8. According to Genesis, why did Adam name his wife Eve?

Answer: she was the mother of all human beings

Adam and Eve had been taken into temptation by the evil serpent and ate the sacred fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The serpent would be punished by God and was forced to crawl on his belly for eternity. God would punish women of all kind by forcing them to endure great pain while bearing children. God would punish man for Adam's bad deed and man would be forced to work hard to support their families. As women would be the bearer of children, Adam would name her:

"Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all human beings. And the Lord God made clothes out of animal skins for Adam and his wife, and he clothed them." (Genesis 3.20-21)
9. Whose wife is known in Genesis as Sarai?

Answer: Abram

In the early chapters of Genesis, Abram was married to Sarai. In Genesis 17, however, God would request that Abram be known as Abraham and Sarai be known as Sarah.

"Your name will no longer be Abram, but Abraham." (Genesis 17.5)

"God said to Abraham, 'You must no longer call your wife Sarai, from now on her name is Sarah." (Genesis 17.15)

Although Hagar was associated with Abram and Sarai, she was, in fact, a woman -- Sarai's servant.
10. Following God's creation of the heavens and earth was a day of rest, as recorded in Genesis. Was this seventh day blessed by God?

Answer: Yes

After all of the hard work God put into creating planet earth and the universe, he dedicated the seventh day as the day of rest. In doing so, he set this seventh day apart from the rest by placing a blessing on this day.
