It's All In The Words Trivia Quiz

This quiz was inspired by a conversation between my father and me. He is a minister of the gospel. He gave me a few references regarding what he was talking about, and I simply compiled them as a quiz. I hope you get a blessing from his insights. King J

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 11th chapter of Mark, in the New Testament, Jesus placed a curse on a fig tree because it bore no fruit. Later, when Peter brought his attention to the now-withered fig tree, what words of advice did Jesus give about the power of words when used in conjunction with true faith, according to the King James Bible?

Answer: Have faith in God

The thought that Jesus seems to have been conveying was that with faith in God, without doubt interfering with that faith, is a very effective way of operating in His will in our lives.

The passage in Mark 11:21-24 is rendered this way in the King James Version:

"And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
2. Many people are familiar with king Solomon, but did you know that God once appeared to him in a dream, speaking with him? What words did God say to him, according to 1 Kings 3:5? (King James Version)

Answer: Ask what I shall give thee.

"In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee."

A few verses later we see what Solomon asked God for, in verse 9.

"Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?"

Verses 11-13 record God's response to Solomon's request -

"And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days."
3. Which character in the book of Genesis asked of God, "Am I my brother's keeper"? (Genesis 1:9)

Answer: Cain

After Cain killed his brother, Abel, God asked the whereabouts of Abel.
Cain replied with the words, "I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?"
- King James Version.

God, of course, knew what had occurred as a result of what seems to be a fit of jealous rage on the part of Cain.
4. Which king of Israel once made the following observation about God? "And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind." (KJV)

Answer: David

In the 22nd chapter of 2 Kings David spoke of God being his "rock", his fortress and deliverer. He also gave this description of God, along with many other attributes concerning Him.
5. A king of Israel named Saul once sought the advice of what might today be called a medium. She was known as having a "familiar spirit"; a practice that the book of Leviticus speaks against. With which dead prophet did Saul desire her to speak, using her as a type of 'go-between'?

Answer: Samuel

Saul wanted to consult with the prophet Samuel who had formerly been alive during Saul's reign. In fact, he was the man who had anointed Saul as the first king of Israel. As a result of Saul's improper conduct he forfeited his life and that of his sons the very next day in battle.

In Leviticus 20:6 God had commanded that people should not consult with such people ass seen in this passage: "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards... I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."
6. One of the gospels and another book of the New Testament that were written by Luke were addressed to an excellent man whose name means something like "loved of God" or perhaps "friend of God" in the Greek language. Who was this man that Luke referred to as "excellent"?

Answer: Theophilus

There are several possibilities as to who this man actually was (or whether, in fact, the address is to any single person at all); historians are not completely certain. Luke wrote two works of explanation to him: the book of Luke and the book of the Acts of the Apostles, or simply, Acts. Luke wrote these to him in an effort to clarify some points about the life of Christ.
7. Paul wrote a letter to a church and gave them the following words of encouragement to bolster their sense of unity in worship. "But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ." (King James Version) To which church in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) did Paul address this letter?

Answer: Ephesus

Paul sent a letter of encouragement to several different churches. This was an excerpt from only one of those.

Paul asked them to continue in their faith and told them to be as one with each other and also with God as they gathered together to worship him.
8. A Greek woman from the southern province of Roman-controlled Syria once asked Jesus to cast out a demon from her daughter. After he explained to her that it was His primary duty to fulfill the needs of Israel, how did she respond, resulting in Him answering her request?

Answer: Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

The unnamed woman spoke words of faith which caused Jesus to relent in His assessment of the situation and thus he told her, "And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter." And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Mark 7:29-30 (King James Version)
9. When the Old Testament prophet Jonah had been disobedient to God's will, what did he tell those on the boat in which he was traveling, according to the King James Version?

Answer: Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea.

Jonah was immediately aware that the boat on which he was traveling was in trouble as a result of his being aboard. His full statement was:
"Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you."

Jonah 1:11-12 (King James Version)

After spending three days in the belly of a fish (likely a whale), Jonah repented and did as God had asked him to do, witnessing to the citizens of Nineveh.
10. In the KJV book of Isaiah, chapter 14, in what manner does the prophet describe Lucifer?

Answer: son of the morning

In a few excerpts from the 14th chapter of Isaiah, Lucifer is described in these ways:
vs 12-"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"

vs 15-"Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."

vs 16-"They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms"

King James Version
