Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for David. (2 Samuel 11:3)

Answer: Bathsheba

David had a number of wives but Bathsheba is perhaps the most well known. She is best remembered for having an adulterous affair with David while her husband Urriah, a soldier, was off in battle. In addition to being beautiful, it's apparent Bathsheba knew how to be a powerbroker.

It was largely because of her intervention that Solomon became king, beating out his half brother Adonijah, the son of Haggith. Bathsheba's intervention, with the help of Nathan the prophet, is told in the first chapter of 1 Kings. With Solomon as king, Bathsheba would become the most powerful woman in the land.
2. Find the match for Ahab. (1 Kings 16:30-32)

Answer: Jezebel

Jezebel was the wicked wife of King Ahab. She is regarded by many as the most wicked woman in the Bible and according to the Website Meaning-of-names.com, Jezebel means 'impure'. She is despised in Scripture because she convinced her husband Ahab to worship false gods and persecute God's prophets.

Her life ended when she was thrown out of a window by her aides and she was trampled by horses, as per 2 Kings 9:30-37.
3. Find the match for Saul. (1 Samuel 14:50)

Answer: Ahinoam

According to 1 Samuel 14:50, Ahinoam was the wife of Saul, the first king of Israel. Verse 49 states they were the parents of Jonathan, Jishui, Malchishua, Merab and Michal. (2 Samuel 2:10 also states Saul was the father of Ishbosheth who briefly replaced him as king before David became king of a united Israel.)

Kish was the father of Saul. Scripture states Kish was a Benjamite and he was the son of Abiel, who was the son of Zeror, who was the son of Bechorath (Bekorath in the NIV). Bechorath was the son of Aphiah and the grandson of Benjamin.

1 Samuel 9:2, in the NKJV Bible, states: "And he [Kish] had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people."
4. Find the match for Rehoboam. (2 Chronicles 11:21)

Answer: Maacah

Similar to most kings in the Old Testament, Rehoboam had a number of wives and concubines. However, it is clear Maacah was his favorite.

2 Chronicles 11:21, in the NKJV, states: "Now Rehoboam loved Maachah the granddaughter of Absalom more than all his wives and his concubines; for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and begot twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters."

Verse 20 states Maacah bore Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.

Rehoboam replaced his father Solomon as king. Scripture reports he got off to a bad start when he ignored the advice of his father's advisers and followed the advice of young men he had grown up with, as per 1 Kings 12.

And from there things got worse. The ten northern tribes broke away and before long Rehoboam was left ruling over a much smaller domain than his father Solomon and his grandfather David.

According to 1 Kings 14:21, Rehoboam was 41 years old when he became king and he reigned for seventeen turbulent years. He was succeeded by his son Abijah.
5. Find the match for Asa. (1 Kings 22:42)

Answer: Azubah

Azubah was the wife of Asa and she was the mother of Jehoshaphat of Israel, as per 1 Kings 22:42 and 2 Chronicles 20:31. The same verses state she was the daughter of Shilhi.

According to Wikipedia, Azubah means 'deserted'.

There is a second Azubah in Scripture. The other woman with the same name was the wife of Caleb, as per 1 Chronicles 2:18.
6. Find the match for Athaliah. (2 Kings 8:18 and 2 Chronicles 21:6)

Answer: Jehoram

Athaliah is generally considered the daughter of King Ahab and his wicked wife Jezebel and was married to Jehoram of Judah to apparently seal a treaty between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

The sordid story of Queen Athaliah is found in the 11th chapter of 2 Kings as well as the 22nd and 23rd chapters of 2 Chronicles.

After Jehoram's death, Ahaziah became king of Judah, and Athaliah was queen mother. When Ahaziah was killed, the evil Athaliah took things into her own hands to cement her hold on power. To this end, she killed all Ahaziah's children except Joash, the youngest, as per 2 Kings 11:1-2. (The only reason she didn't kill Joash is the fact he was placed in hiding.) In other words, she killed her own grandchildren to cement her hold on power.

Athaliah reigned for six years and was killed in an insurrection. 2 Kings 11:20 states "all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm" when the news was announced Athaliah had been killed with a sword at the palace.

Incidentally, two different kings were named Ahaziah. The first Ahaziah was the son of Ahab and Jezebel and reigned as king of Israel. The second Ahaziah was the sixth king of Judah. His father was Joram in the NKJV or Jehoram in the NIV.
7. Find the match for Hezekiah. (2 Kings 21:1)

Answer: Hephzibah

Hephzibah was the wife of Hezekiah and according to 2 Kings 21:1, they were parents of Manasseh who became king at the tender age of twelve years. Scripture states Manasseh was extremely brutal.

Similar to many of the wives of kings, little is known about Hephzibah as she is mentioned in passing reference.

Hezekiah is perhaps best known for the LORD giving him fifteen additional years to live. According to 2 Kings 20:1, the prophet Isaiah told Hezekiah to get his house in order "for you shall die, and not live."

Hezekiah then poured out his heart to the LORD immediately after Isaiah left and Scripture reports the prophet promptly received a message from the LORD. 2 King 20:4-5, in the NKJV Bible, states in part: "'Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: 'I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD. And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David.'"

Scripture goes on to report fifteen more years were added to Hezekiah's life.
8. Find the match for Josiah. (2 Kings 23:31)

Answer: Hamutal

Hamutal was the wife of Josiah and mother of Jehoahaz, as per 2 Kings 23:31. Similar to many of the wives of Israelite kings, little is known about Hamutal as she is mentioned in passing reference.

Josiah was king of Judah and reigned thirty-one years. Josiah's name appears in the New Testament where he is part of the genealogy of Christ, as per Matthew 1:10-11.
9. Find the match for Solomon. (1 Kings 14:21)

Answer: Naamah

Although Solomon had seven hundred wives, princesses and three hundred concubines, Naamah is the only woman identified in Scripture. She was the mother of Rehoboam who became king of Israel after his father Solomon died.

She is described as an Ammonite in 1 Kings 14:21 and 2 Chronicles 12:13.

Christiananswers.net reports Naamah was the daughter of the king of Ammon. The same Website reports Naamah means 'the beautiful'.

There is a second woman known as Naamah in Scripture. The other woman was the daughter of Lamech and Zillah, as per Genesis 4:22.
10. Find the match for Ahasuerus in the NKJV and Xerxes in the NIV. (Esther 1:9)

Answer: Vashti

Vashti is the correct answer. There's no mistaking the fact she was independent minded and believed in taking a stand -- regardless of the consequences. In fact, she could very well have been the world's first women's libber.

Queen Vashti was deposed after she refused to obey a request of King Ahasuerus. (In the NIV, the king is known as Xerxes.) In Esther 1:10-11, it states the king asked Queen Vashti to wear her royal crown and come before him to "display her beauty" to the people and the nobles. Esther 1:12, in the NKJV Bible, states: "But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him."

It was the end for her and a new beginning for Esther who would become queen.

Esther, of course, would play a major role in preventing a diabolical plan by Haman to exterminate the Jews from coming to fruition.

Meanwhile, there is no further mention of Vashti in Scripture.
