quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the crime of murdering his brother Abel, we, the jury, find ________ GUILTY and sentence him to banished for the rest of his days to the Land of Nod.

Answer: Cain

Cain's murder occurs in Genesis 4, where it is said, "and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him." (Genesis 4:8, KJV) This is the first documented murder in the Bible.
2. For the conspiracy to commit murder of 85 priests simply because they aided the incumbent to the throne, we, the jury, find King ________ GUILTY, and sentence him to a life of guilt and shame, followed with suicide by the blade of his own sword.

Answer: Saul

"And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod." (I Samuel 22:18, KJV) Saul's aides were starting to turn toward David as the one they wanted to lead the country, and Saul's jealousy and pride created a rage that would not subside.

He ordered 85 priests slaughtered, because when David fled Saul's impending wrath, the priests would not reveal his whereabouts.
3. For the murder of an Egyptian guard, and the attempted cover-up of this crime, we, the jury, find ________ GUILTY, and sentence him to flee into exile for forty years in the land of Midian.

Answer: Moses

As stated in Exodus 2, Moses witnessed an Egyptian striking a fellow Hebrew, and he retaliated on behalf of the Hebrew to the point of killing the Egyptian. He tried to hide the body in the sand, but there were some who witnessed it, and let Moses know the next day. Moses knew he would need to flee, or the Pharaoh would kill him instantly once he found out.

He remained in Midian until God summoned him to call on the new Pharaoh to free the Hebrews from slavery.
4. For the charge of conspiracy to commit murder of his mistress' husband, we the jury find ________, King of Israel and Judah, GUILTY. Due to good behavior prior to the crime, we suspend sentence, but order the execution of the child born of the defendant's act with the mistress, she of the name Bathsheba.

Answer: David

David spied Bathsheba bathing one night, and got her pregnant. He attempted to cover it up by having Uriah consummate with his wife, but his attempts to get Uriah to relinquish his post in battle to go join his wife were thwarted by Uriah's allegiance to David. Finally David ordered Uriah to the front lines in a battle that couldn't be won, and Uriah was killed in battle.

David's aide Nathan called David out on this (II Samuel 12), and let David know he would not receive God's wrath directly, but that his child born to Bathsheba would perish. This was true. The son born to David lived only seven days.
5. For the charge of murder against Absalom as he suspended defenseless from a tree, we, the jury, find ________ GUILTY, but as the murder was an act of war upon a traitor of his commander, we sentence to time served and probation.

Answer: Joab

Absalom had begun a conspiracy to become king and was at war with David, his father, who was the king. During a large battle in Ephraim, many of Absalom's men were lost. During Absalom's retreat, he got his long flowing hair caught in a tree branch, and his mount left him hanging. Contrary to the advice of his fellow warriors, Joab went to Absalom and plunged three javelins into his heart (II Samuel 18:14). David mourned profusely for the loss of his son, even though he had become his enemy.
6. For the crime of conspiracy to commit murder, stemming from the unlawful decree to have his commanding high priest stoned, we, the jury, find King ________ GUILTY, and sentence him to having his kingdom overthrown by the Aramean armies, as well as death by said armies.

Answer: Joash

Zechariah stood up to King Joash, chastising him for serving false idols, saying, "Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you." (2 Chronicles 24:20, KJV) Joash promptly ordered the stoning of Zechariah. God's wrath was stirred, and the rather small army of Aram defeated the much larger army of Jerusalem, with the help of God's hand.
7. For the charges of slander, theft of property, and murder, stemming from the death of Naboth the vineyard owner simply so her husband Ahab could have the vineyard, we the jury find Queen ________ GUILTY, and sentence her to death by defenestration, and order her body eaten by dogs at the place she perishes.

Answer: Jezebel

Jezebel is the go-to girl when one wants to personify evil. Ahab, her husband and the king, saw a vineyard he wanted, but Naboth's beliefs didn't allow him to bequeath anything to the king that he had inherited from his fathers. Jezebel plotted to have two men speak slander against Naboth in a public ceremony, having them say he had spoken out against God and the king. Naboth was instantly dragged outside and stoned.

Jezebel would later be thrown out a high window and perish (II Kings 9:32-33). Her chance for a grand burial were thwarted due to prophesied dogs eating her body and leaving nothing identifiable for the undertakers to bury.
8. For conspiracy to commit murder on his brother Adonijah, we, the jury find ________, King of Israel and Judah, NOT GUILTY, for the murder was punishment for the acts of treason committed by Adonijah.

Answer: Solomon

Solomon had just risen to the throne due to the death of his father David. However, Solomon's older brother, Adonijah felt he was entitled, so he attempted to trick Solomon by asking for David's last wife's hand in marriage. Solomon saw through the plan, and for trying manipulate God's plan for the lineage leading to the Son of God, Solomon ordered Adonijah put to death (I Kings 2:24).

The probation mentioned earlier in Question #5 for Joab was "revoked" when it was discovered that Joab had conspired with Adonijah in these acts of treason. Following his father David's advice, Solomon had Joab killed as well.
9. For the unspecified heinous acts committed during looting and rioting, we, the jury find ________ GUILTY, but suspend the sentence of death by crucifixion, according to the consensus of the masses. This decision ordered under protest by Pontius Pilate.

Answer: Barabbas

Little is documented of Barabbas in the Bible; mentions of his name associate him with being a murderer during an insurrection (Luke 23:19, KJV). But the screaming crowd insisted that Jesus be crucified, even when Pilate brought Barabbas before the crowd. Pontius Pilate stated "Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you?" They said, "Barabbas." Pilate saith unto them, "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" They all say unto him, "Let him be crucified." (Matthew 27: 21-22, KJV) To which Pilate released Barabbas, publicly washed his hands. and told the angry crowd his hands are clean of this act. Nothing is said of Barabbas after he is released, so it is unknown if he went back to his life of crime.
10. For conspiracy to commit murder on John the Baptist and slander upon her brother Agrippa, we, the jury find ________ GUILTY, and sentence her to exile in the land of Lyon with her husband Herod Antipas, where she will live out the rest of her days.

Answer: Herodias

John the Baptist had been thrown in prison for his words toward King Herod Antipas about marrying his brother's wife. The wife in question, Herodias, took even more offense to this. When the daughter of Herodias danced for Antipas, he offered her anything she wanted. Herodias took this opportunity to order her daughter to request the head of John the Baptist (Mark 6:25).

Herodias did not receive banishment from the country for these acts; it was her urging her husband to discredit her brother, Herod Agrippa. This angered the emperor, Caligula, and Caligula ordered Antipas sent to Lyon (later Gaul). Herodias followed her husband there, even though Caligula had given her the chance not to go.
