Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of Jacob's sons, the oldest one, had a seedy relationship with Jacob's concubine and tried to save Joseph?

Answer: Reuben

Jacob had two wives, Rachael and Leah. Leah was not as attractive as Rachael, and Jacob loved Rachael more. God pitied Leah and helped her by enabling her to have children. She named her first one "Reuben", which in Hebrew sounds like "has seen my affliction". (See Genesis 29:17 & 29:30-32.)

Reuben later had an affair with Jacob's concubine. Jacob called Reuben "uncontrolled as water" (Genesis 49:4 NAS), and said that even though he was the oldest he would not excel because "you got into your father's bed and you defiled it" (Genesis 49:4 HCSB). To his credit though, Reuben did save Joseph's life by telling the other brothers to throw him into a pit rather than killing him. Reuben meant to rescue Joseph and return him to his father, Jacob, but the others sold him to the slave traders and he never got the chance. (See Genesis 35:22, 49:3-4 & 37:18-30.)
2. According to 1 Corinthians (HCSB Bible), the Spirit searches what?

Answer: everything, even the depths of God

Paul says that he himself didn't teach human wisdom but God's wisdom, which is taught to believers by the Spirit. Reference: 1 Corinthians 2:6-13
3. The book of Proverbs (HCSB Bible) says the following about which of these things? "She is more precious than jewels; nothing you desire compares with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left, riches and honor."

Answer: wisdom

See Proverbs 3:15-16. Proverbs also says that "[Wisdom's] ways are pleasant, and all her paths, peaceful. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who hold on to her are happy," (3:17-18 HCSB) and then describes God using wisdom to create the world (3:19-20). A longer description of Wisdom, described as a woman, comes later in chapter 8.
4. After the Resurrection, what did Jesus say about ghosts?

Answer: they don't have flesh and bones

When Jesus appeared to the disciples, they thought maybe they were seeing a ghost. Jesus told them to "touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have" (Luke 24:39 HCSB). (See Luke 24:36-40.)

The disciples had made the same mistake once before, seeing Jesus walking on water and thinking he was a ghost (see Matthew 14:25-27).

The idea that ghosts can't be seen in light is from B-rated Bill Cosby comedy "Ghost Dad".
5. In Romans (New English Translation), what does suffering produce? It in turn produces character.

Answer: endurance

If a "→" means "produces", then:
suffering → endurance → character → hope.

The "hope" here is probably the "hope of God's glory" described briefly before (NET Bible).

Reference: Romans 5:2-4
6. Which king of the ten tribes of Israel, who had worked for King Solomon, was defeated by King Abijah of Judah?

Answer: Jereboam

Jereboam had been the leader of some of King Solomon's forced labor, but later became king. The book of 2 Chronicles describes how Judah's King Abijah defeated Jereboam because he trusted God, although why the two were at war with each other is not explained. (See 1 Kings 11:29, 1 Kings 12:20, 2 Chronicles 13:2-18.)

More detail on Jereboam's life: During King Solomon's rule over all twelve tribes of Israel, Jeroboam had been the leader of the forced laborers of the tribes descended from Joseph. A prophet told him that he was going to rule over ten of the twelve tribes of Israel, and that "if you listen to all I command you and walk in My ways, then I will be with you and give Israel to you" (edited from 1 Kings 11:38 NAS). (See 1 Kings 11:26-40.)
After this prophecy of course came true, Jeroboam set up golden calves for the people to worship so that they wouldn't have to travel to the temple, in an act eerily similar to Aaron's golden calf god. (See 1 Kings 12:20 & 12:28-30.)
Later a prophet told Jereboam that "You behaved more wickedly than all who were before you. You have made for yourself other gods, but you have flung Me behind your back. Because of all this, I am about to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam: I will eliminate all of Jeroboam's males, both slave and free, in Israel" (edited from 1 Kings 14:9-10 HCSB). God eventually killed Jereboam (See 1 Kings 14:6-10, 2 Chronicles 13:20.)
7. In the second year after Israel left Egypt, Moses and Aaron did a census of the male Israelites who were at least twenty years old, excluding the Levites. About how many were there?

Answer: 600 thousand

See Numbers 1:1-3 & 1:27. When Joseph's sons and their families had entered Egypt, there had only been 70 of them (or possibly 75, there's a textual disagreement; see Exodus 1:5).
8. After recording Aaron's and Miriam's complaints about Moses and his foreign wife, the book of Numbers comments that Moses was "a very humble man" (HCSB Bible). This rings true because there is no record of Moses saying anything in his own defense against Aaron and Miriam.

Answer: True

Aaron and Miriam complained that Moses' wife was from Cush, which was in what is now Sudan and Ethiopia. They also asked, "Does the Lord speak only through Moses? Does He not also speak through us?" (Numbers 12:2 HCSB). Numbers comments that "Moses was very humble- more than any person on earth" (12:3 ISV), and we never see Moses defend himself: God has to come in and do it. One author (Randy White) suggests that "perhaps the humility comment is actually saying, 'Moses should have put his sister and brother in their place, but he was overly humble and would not even protect his God-given place of prominence.' This is a false humility that is not God-honoring".

References: Numbers 11:35-12:8, "Word for the World with Dr. Randy White" from Crosswalk.com. The "ISV" referenced for Numbers 12:3 is the International Standard Version.
9. Which king of Tyre provided timber for Solomon's temple?

Answer: Hiram

Hiram, King of Tyre, had already provided David with wood for his palace. Now he agreed to help King Solomon as well by providing wood for Solomon's temple. Solomon repaid him by providing food for Hiram's household. (See 2 Samuel 5:11, 1 Kings 5:9-11.)
10. Briefly before His arrest and execution, Jesus told His disciples (HCSB Bible): "You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! When the Counselor comes, He will conquer the world."

Answer: False

Actually it was, "Be courageous! I have conquered the world." After saying this, Jesus looked up and began to pray:
"Father,
the hour has come.
Glorify Your Son
so that the Son may glorify You,
for You gave Him authority
over all flesh"
(John 17:1-2 HCSB)

(See John 16:33-17:2.)
