Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of the place where the Israelites were camping on the east side of the Jordan?

Answer: Shittim

It was while they were staying in Shittim that Joshua sent the spies into Jericho. From here they set out and camped closer to the Jordan River. They then crossed the Jordan before marching around Jericho. This can be found in Joshua 3.
2. When the Israelites marched around the city of Jericho and it came down they went and attacked its inhabitants. Did they kill everyone?

Answer: No

When the two men had spied out Jericho they stayed at the house of Rahab. When the king of Jericho heard that the spies were staying at the house of Rahab he sent her a message telling her to bring out the spies. But she hid them instead and told the men who delivered the message that the two spies had already left, so they went out to search for the spies. Because of this, when Jericho's walls came down and the Israelites attacked the city, they spared Rahab and her family.

This can be found in Joshua chapters 2 and 6.
3. After the Israelites overtook Jericho, what city did they attack next?

Answer: Ai

In Joshua 7 Joshua sent spies into the land of Ai. They came back saying that the city was so small that they only needed two or three thousand men to attack it. So three thousand men went and attacked the city. But the men of Ai defeated the Israelites, killing thirty-six men.

When Joshua heard of this he prayed to God asking him why the Israelites were defeated. God said that the Israelites had stolen the holy items from Jericho and put them into their own possessions. But if the people who did this were destroyed, then they would be able to defeat their enemies. Joshua had the nation of Israel come forth by tribe and God pointed out the tribe of Judah.

Then he had the clans of Judah come forth and God pointed out the clan of Zerahites. He had the Zerahites come forth by family and God pointed out Zimri's family.

Then he had that family come forth, man by man and Achan was pointed out. Achan then confessed that he had stolen some things and they were buried in his tent. Joshua sent some men and they found what they were looking for.

Then Achan and his children were stoned and their remains were burned. The LORD forgave the Israelites. Then they attacked Ai again and they defeated them. This can be found in Joshua 7-8.
4. The Israelites made a peace treaty with Gibeon. After this the king of Jerusalem heard of the Israelites' victories. He then joined forces with some neighboring cities to attack Gibeon. How many cities did he join with?

Answer: 4

The king of Jerusalem joined forces with Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. The five armies then went and attacked Gibeon. But the Gibeonites sent word to the Israelites asking for help and Israel came to their aid. This can be found in Joshua 10.
5. What unusual thing happened when the Israelites went up against the king of Jerusalem and his allies in Joshua 10?

Answer: The sun stood still

Joshua and his men attacked marched all night from their camp at Gilgal and took the allied forces by surprise. The LORD helped the Israelites by making large hailstones fall from the sky and, according to Joshua 10:11, more men died because of the hailstones then because of the swords of the Israelites. During the battle Joshua commanded the sun and moon to stand still, so God made them stop moving for about a full day.

This can be found in Joshua 10.
6. After the battle in Joshua 10, the five allied kings, who had survived, fled and hid in a cave. Where was the cave located?

Answer: Makkedah

The five allied kings fled and hid in a cave in Makkedah. When Joshua heard this he had them brought out. He killed them and the Israelites hung them in trees. At sunset he had them thrown back into the cave and had the Israelites put large rocks over the mouth of the cave. This can be found in Joshua 10:16-27.
7. Later in Joshua 10, the Israelites attacked several cities to the south. Were they defeated by any of the southern armies?

Answer: No

The Israelites attacked Libnah, Lachish (who had help from the king of Gezer and his army), Eglon, Hebron, Debir and several other cities and they defeated all of them, leaving no survivors. After this they went back to their camp at Gilgal. This can be found in Joshua 10.
8. After the Israelites attacked the southern cities, they attacked the northern cities. How many northern kings are mentioned by name in Joshua 11 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: 2

Jabin king of Hazor and Jobab king of Madon are the only northern kings mentioned. They joined together with the kings of Shimron, Acshaph, Arabah south of Kinnereth, Naphoth Dor, the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and the Hivites and their armies to attack the Israelites.

But the Lord told Joshua not to be afraid and they defeated the joined forces, leaving no survivors. This can be found in Joshua 11.
9. After the Israelites won all of their battles, the time came to divide up the land among the tribes of Israel. Most of the tribes settled in the land west of the Jordan River, but some of them settled on the east side. How many tribes were given land on the east side, according to Joshua 13 of the NIV Bible?

Answer: 3

The tribe of Manasseh split into two parts and took land on both sides of the Jordan. East Manasseh was the furthest north of the eastern tribes with Reuben furthest south and Gad between them. That's three tribes on the east side of the Jordan. This can be found in Joshua 13.
10. In the Book of Joshua, were the Levites given an area of land for their own?

Answer: No

The Levites had no land as their own. Their inheritance was the burnt offerings to the Lord. The other tribes were commanded to let them settle in their land and give them their own cities of refuge. This can be found in Joshua 13 and Numbers 35.
