Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Satanael
Answer: Bogomilism
Bogomilism was most widely practiced in the 10th-15th centuries in Europe. Within the confines of that religion Satanael is the older brother of Christ. Initially he was the right hand of God, before rebelling and being cast out of Heaven.
2. Satan
Answer: Christianity
The Christian devil, Satan, was the most widely known version of evil in late 20th and early 21st century western culture.
Often pictured as a serpent, Satan is referred to as the root of all evil. He was credited with tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke all mention Satan as having tried to tempt Jesus in the early days of his ministry.
3. Iblis
Answer: Islam
The Islamic devil, or Iblis, translates to mean "the desperate" from the ancient Arabic it was first written in.
Iblis was created by God out of smokeless fire, according to the Qur'an.
4. Melek Taus
Answer: Yazidism
Melek Taus was one of seven holy beings the Yazidis faith believe in. He became the incarnation of evil when he refused to bow down to the human race. God had ordered the seven to do so; his refusal, while meant to be out of respect for God, was still a refusal of God.
Yazidism is a monotheistic faith, practiced mostly in the Middle East, with origins dating back to the third century B.C. Most practitioners of the faith are ethnically Kurdish.
5. There is no evil incarnate.
Answer: Paganism (Roman)
According to Roman writings of Paganism, there was no evil being incarnate. Due to the lack of an all powerful evil being, there were few false prophets within their society. As the early Pagans began to adopt some Christian views, Satan was worked into the religion.
6. Mara
Answer: Buddhism
Mara is a tempter who manifests himself to all men and women eventually. One of the early stories is that he appeared to Buddha and tried to tempt him with woman and other sins of the flesh.
Mara represents a death of the spiritual being. Mara is not thought of as a fallen angel, but as a demon within the Buddhist faith.
7. Set
Answer: Ancient Egypt
Set wasn't originally "evil" in the ancient Egyptian religion, but he was the god of chaos, always trying to prevent order.
Set, also known as Setesh, Sutekh and Setekh, was demonized in the Third Intermediate after the death of Ramesses XI. As the God of foreigners he became associated with foreign oppressors and started to be portrayed as violent and evil.
Set was also the god of the desert, storms, violence and foreigners within their belief system.
The God was also said to have killed Osiris, furthering his perception of being evil.
8. Beelzebub
Answer: Christianity
The Christian devil is also known by this name, among many others. This name is most often associated with Catholics, though I left the more generic answer of Christianity to avoid confusion.
When he is referred to as Beelzebub, the devil is depicted as a giant fly.
Beelzebub as a name was referenced in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
9. Baphomet
Answer: Knights Templar
While the Knights Templar were, for a time, sanctioned by the Pope, they are more modernly considered to have had their own secret religion behind closed doors.
Baphomet was the devil they allegedly worshipped in these closed door sessions. He is often depicted as a man with a goat's head.
10. Mephistopheles
Answer: German folklore
The name derives from Hebrew and means "scatterer, disperser", when translated.
The German legend refers to Mephistopheles, not as a completely evil being, but as a being who appears to those who are already damned. He is said to help them in their Earthly conquests only to collect their souls when they die.

So often, Commission-goers are given a title they have to work with, but sometimes, like in Commission 41, launched in March 2016, they have to add to a title to make it work. This time, authors got two words and had to add a third, sending them into new, unexpected directions.
