Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A logical place to start a quiz on someone life's would be their birth. John Deere was born in 1804 in a city that began hosting the Vermont State Fair in 1846. What is the name of this city that with a population of 16,500 was the third-largest in Vermont according to the 2010 census?

Answer: Rutland

Rutland, Vermont is located in the south-central portion of the state about 32 miles from the border with New York. The downtown area of Rutland has been classified as a National Historic Place in large part because of the ornate marble buildings that are located there.

A marble quarry near Rutland helped fuel growth of the city during the late 1800s but most of these quarries were closed in the 1990s.
2. After John Deere attended Middlebury College he was apprenticed in 1821 at the age of 17 to a man named Benjamin Lawrence and four years later he entered the trade for himself. What was this first occupation of John Deere that involves creating objects from wrought iron or steel by forging the metal?

Answer: Blacksmith

John Deere's early life included many struggles, with his family being in constant poverty and his father was lost at sea when he was only four years old. Seeking to establish his own skills rather than continue the family tailoring business, John Deere received training as a blacksmith.

Other well-known blacksmiths in United States history include Nathaniel Allen, Thomas Davenport, and Sequoyah.
3. In 1827, just two years after going into business for himself, John Deere married a woman with whom he would have nine children. Who was this woman whose name is similar to the first and last word of a popular nursery rhyme that was first published in 1830?

Answer: Demarias Lamb

John Deere was married to Demarias Lamb from 1827 until her death in 1865. Tragically, four of John Deere's children died before the age of 20. Interestingly, Deere's second wife was Demarias's sister, Lucenia Lamb, who he was married to from 1867 until his death in 1886.
4. Shortly after he was married John Deere and his family settled in Grand Detour, Illinois. Unlike Vermont, this area had tough prairie soil that the plows of the time struggled with. What metal alloy did John Deere's revolutionary plow of the 1830s replace cast-iron with?

Answer: Steel

In addition to replacing cast-iron with cast-steel, Deere also modified the shape of the plow's moldboard which increased its utility. Deere sold his first steel plow in 1838 to a local farmer and demand for his product quickly exceeded his ability to produce the plows himself.
5. In 1843 John Deere formed a partnership so that he could keep up with the demand for his product. What was the name of his business partner that he had a contentious relationship with until 1848 when the partnership was dissolved?

Answer: Leonard Andrus

The partnership allowed Deere to increase production from 100 plows in 1841 to 400 plows in 1843 and 1,000 plows in 1847. After their partnership ended, Leonard Andrus eventually founded the Grand Detour Plow Company which would be in direct competition with John Deere.
6. In 1848 John Deere moved from Grand Detour to a city 60 miles away located on the Mississippi River. What was the name of this city whose name comes from the French meaning "City of Mills"?

Answer: Moline

Deere relocating to Moline, Illinois in 1848 helped spark growth for the city which had incorporated earlier that year. The city provided Deere with needed power from dam and coal deposits as well as easy access to river transportation that would lower his shipping costs. John Deere & Company's headquarters are located in Moline and in 2014 the company was listed number 80 on America's Fortune 500.
7. In 1854 an influential person in the success of John Deere's company would start working for him and in 1864 this person formed a firm with John Deere as equal partners. Who was this individual who would handle the day-to-day management of Deere & Company from 1864 until his death in 1907?

Answer: Charles Deere

Charles Deere was the fifth of John Deere's nine children and by historical accounts he was a successful salesperson early in the company's career and an adept manager and businessman as the company grew. His business acumen also allowed John Deere more time to refine the design of his products. Charles Deere's son-in-law William Butterworth became the company's president after Charles's death and he helped the company expand into the profitable tractor business.
8. Not surprisingly given his name, what leaping animal did John Deere choose as the logo for Deere & Company?

Answer: Deer

The leaping deer featured on the John Deere logo is one of the most iconic that I have seen in the industry. With slight modifications in between, from 1876 to 1936 the John Deere logo featured a black and white deer jumping over a log surrounded by the founder's name and Moline, Illinois underneath.

In the 20th century the John Deere logo was changed to feature a yellow deer leaping within a green shield.
9. Confident that his company was in able hands, John Deere spent much of his later life in civil and political affairs. Which of the following was NOT a title that John Deere would hold in his lifetime?

Answer: University Founder

In addition to serving as the President of the National Bank of Moline, director of the Moline Free Public Library, and mayor of the city of Moline, John Deere was also a trustee for the First Congregational Church. Through the rapid growth of his company which provided an economic boost to the city and his civic works, John Deere helped put the city of Moline on the map.
10. In 1875 John Deere purchased a home and three adjoining lots and over the next five years he renovated the residence. What geologically themed name did John Deere give to his 8,000 square foot home that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003?

Answer: Red Cliff

John Deere moved into Red Cliff in 1880 but he only lived there for six years as he died from natural causes in 1886 at the age of 82. Red Cliff remained in the Deere family until 1936 when it was sold.
