Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first word of Philippians?

Answer: Paul

It says is Philippians 1:1, "Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons."

The Philippians are from a town known as Philippi.
2. What kind of things does Philippians say Christians should approve?

Answer: excellent

It says in Philippians 1:10, "That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ"

By "things that are excellent", it likely means those things which Christ Himself would approve, because they would bring Him glory and help to further the kingdom of Heaven.
3. Paul says that to die is to what?

Answer: to gain

It says in Philippians 1:21, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

Paul says this because he knows dying will cause him to end up in Heaven with Christ, and be free of pain and sorrow.
4. What does Paul say Christ was obedient unto?

Answer: death

It says in Philippians 2:8, "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

The dictionary defines obedience as "the act or practice of obeying; dutiful or submissive compliance" (from Dictionary.com, definition 2)

Therefore, Christ submitted to death, that is, He was willing to die on the cross.
5. In Philippians, readers are told they should not complain.

Answer: True

It says in Philippians 2:14, "Do all things without murmurings and disputings."

This verse says people should do things without complaining and without arguing.
6. What three things does Paul tell his readers to beware of in 3:2 (King James Version)?

Answer: dogs, evil workers, and the concision

It says in Philippians 3:2, "Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision."

Concision means mutilation.
7. How old was Paul when he was circumcised?

Answer: 8 days old

It says in Philippians 3:5, "Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee."

It is Jewish tradition that on the eighth day of a child's life is the bris (ceremony in which the circumcision takes place). (See Eliezer Cohen's article "Brit Milah, the bris" on the "Jewish Magazine" website.)
8. What does Paul say Christians should "stand fast in"?

Answer: the Lord

It says in Philippians 4:1, "Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved."

To stand fast means that, even when times are tough you do not give up. In fact, to Christians, tough times are the best times to stand fast in the Lord.
9. Paul says that he has learned to be content under what circumstances?

Answer: whatever state he is in

It says in Philippians 4:11, "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content."

Not all of us are going to be wealthy and we are all going to have obstacles we face, but Paul tells people they should be content, no matter what their circumstances are. That is, money (for example) should not dictate happiness.
10. Why does Paul say he can do all things through Christ?

Answer: He strengthens him

It says in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

This verse often provides a lot of encouragement to Christians.
