Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This man was judge of Israel until the Israelites clamored for a king. Two men profited from him, being anointed king by him. Can you name him?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel was Israel's judge, but the people cried for a king, wanting to be like other peoples, not understanding that God is their king, and being God's chosen people, were set apart from other nations. So, Samuel anointed Saul son of Kish as king over Israel.

When Saul disobeyed God's will and did not completely exterminate the Amalekites, God sent Samuel to anoint David son of Jesse as the next king.
2. Elijah had a contest with the prophets of Baal, to see if which god would send fire to burn the offering on an altar. When God sent fire, the Israelites were overawed, and followed Elijah's orders, slaughtering prophets of Baal. Which wicked man was king when that happened?

Answer: Ahab

The rules were that they build an altar, place a sacrifice on the altar, then pray to their god. If Baal set his offering afire, then he was god, but if God sent fire from heaven, then the people were to acknowledge him as God and ruler.
"At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: 'O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." (1 Kings 18: 36)

The Bible tells us that God sent fire from heaven, which consumed the wood, meat, and water that Elijah had poured over the altar. Then, the Israelites believed in God and captured the Baal priests, whom Elijah killed.
3. During the persecution of prophets by King Ahab, how many prophets did the prophet Obadiah hide in two caves?

Answer: 100

"Haven't you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord's prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water." -Obadiah to Elijah (1 Kings 18: 13)
Fifty in each cave. Talk about a squeeze!

Obadiah was in charge of Ahab's palace yet was a God-fearing man.
4. Who preached to the people of Nineveh, thus saving them from destruction? Hint: Think "Big Fish".

Answer: Jonah

Jonah did not wish to go to Nineveh, so he fled in a ship, but God sent a storm, which only calmed after Jonah was flung into the ocean. After being swallowed by a fish, Jonah was spat out upon land and sent to Nineveh. He wanted God to punish the people of Nineveh, but since they repented in sackcloth and ashes, God pardoned them, making Jonah angry. By means of growing a vine to give Jonah shade, then withering it, God showed him that he was being unreasonable.

"You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow....But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?" (Jonah 4: 10-11)
5. This prophetess prophesied during King Josiah's reign that Jerusalem was sure to fall because of the people's wicked ways. Who is she?

Answer: Huldah

God affirmed through her that he would cause all disasters written in the Book of Law to happen because Israel had turned from Him, but because King Josiah repented and prayed for forgiveness, the Lord would not bring about Israel's destruction during his lifetime. "Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place." (2 Kings 22: 20)
6. This prophet was sent to warn the Israelites for the last time to turn from their wicked ways before the Babylonians defeated them. Who was this man who, like Moses, wasn't sure about his speaking abilities?

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah didn't need to take lessons from Demosthenes. God put His words in his mouth and sent him to speak to the people. Yet they still didn't listen. The prophet spoke to the people, but they just wouldn't listen. He was imprisoned, and false prophets ridiculed him. Once, he was dropped into a well of mud and left to die, but was saved.

When the Babylonians came, and all he predicted came true, the Babylonians set him free.
7. Daniel interpreted the dream of this king to be a prophecy of seven years to come when the king would lose his mind and be as a beast. Which king was this?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar

King Nebuchadnezzar dreamt once of a beautiful, tall tree under which animals found shade. Then, an angel of God came and ordered that the tree be cut down, but its stump preserved. "Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth." (Daniel 4: 15) Daniel told the King that he was the tree, and the decree would come true one day when the King became proud. True enough, one day he spoke a boast, and was instantly stripped of power and transformed. For seven years he stayed like beasts and ate hay.

After that, he acknowledged God as ruler over him.
8. This prophet baptized Christ, and was beheaded by King Herod. Who is he?

Answer: John the Baptist

"This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him." (Matthew 3: 3) John did indeed live in the desert dressed in goat skins, and he tirelessly preached about the coming of Jesus.
9. Jesus Christ called himself a prophet.

Answer: True

"Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor." (Matthew 13: 57) When Jesus returned to his hometown to preach, they all belittled and took offense at him, not thinking him anything more than a carpenter's son, whose mother and siblings they all knew.
10. Because he would be arrested, Paul was warned to not go to Jerusalem there by which man?

Answer: Agabus

Agabus tied his hands and feet with Paul's belt and said that thus would Paul be captured and dragged about in Jerusalem. However, Paul was adamant about going to Jerusalem.
