Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Bible speaks much of faith. Which Bible writer was traditionally thought to have described faith as 'the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen'?

Answer: Paul

In the epistle to the Hebrews, they were encouraged not to cast away their confidence, because, having done the will of God, they would need patience so that they could receive the promise (Hebrews 10:35-36). In chapter 11:1 the famous quote is penned: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen." He reminded them that it was by faith that they believed that the worlds were framed by God. (Hebrews 11:2-3) Although traditionally it was believed that Paul wrote the book of Hebrews this view was questioned in the third century and now many theologians believe that the writer is unknown.
2. Which patriarch was so full of faith that, according to Hebrews 11:5, by faith he was translated that he should not see death?

Answer: Enoch

The biblical record of Enoch is very brief. According to Genesis 5:18 Jared lived for 162 years before fathering Enoch. In verse 21 of Genesis 5 we are told that Enoch lived 65 years before fathering Methuselah. He then walked with God for 300 years during which he had other children. Then, quite amazingly, by the time we get to verse 26 we are told that "Enoch walked with God and was not because God took him." The next time mention is made of Enoch it is in the Hebrews Hall of Fame (Hebrews 11:5): "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death, and he was not found because God translated him; for before his translation he had this testimony that he pleased God."

Elijah was also translated but he was not mentioned in Hebrews 11:5.
3. The Bible records Sarah as a faithless woman.

Answer: False

Many view Sarah as lacking in faith because she laughed within herself when the angel told Abraham that she would bear a child in her old age. However, this is what Paul records in Hebrews 11:11, "Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised." Surprising though it may seem, Sarah was regarded as a woman of faith in the Bible.
4. According to the apostle James, what will save the sick?

Answer: the prayer of faith

In James 5:14-15 the early church is admonished to call for the elders of the church to pray for the sick among them. The elders should pray over the sick individual and anoint him with oil. James wrote that the prayer of faith would raise the sick. Also, if he had any sins it would be forgiven him.
5. Jesus taught the apostles that if they had faith the size of a small seed they could perform great deeds. Which seed did he name?

Answer: mustard

The apostles asked Jesus to increase their faith. In response he told them that if they had faith as a grain of mustard seed they could tell the sycamore tree to be plucked up by the root and planted in the sea and it would obey. (Luke 17: 5,6) Evidently, just a little faith in God does wonders.
6. Which apostle exhorted the early believers to know that the trying of their faith works patience?

Answer: James

The early believers were scattered abroad as a result of persecution. In writing to them, James encouraged them to be joyful in tribulations because the trying of their faith would bring about patience. They should allow patience to have its perfect work: that they would be patient and entire, having need of nothing.
7. The walls of Jericho fell down after the children of Israel marched around them seven days. Which New Testament books tells us that this happened as a result of faith?

Answer: Hebrews

Joshua 6 narrates the taking of Jericho. It is interesting that Hebrews 11:30 links the falling of the walls of Jericho to faith. It is seen that even in Old Testament times God's people needed to have faith to perform great deeds.
8. II Thessalonians 3:2 teaches that all men have faith.

Answer: False

Paul wrote to the Thessalonians asking for their prayers. He wanted them to pray that the word of the Lord would have free course and be glorified (II Thessalonians 3:1). In verse 2 he stated that they needed prayer so that they would be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men, because all men do not have faith. Seems as if wicked and unreasonable men are faithless.
9. Complete this text: "Therefore being justified by faith ___."

Answer: we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

This text is found in Romans 5:1. In Romans 4:24-25 Paul pointed out that Jesus was delivered up for man's offences and raised again for his justification. He continues in chapter 5 to show that, when man is justified by faith, it results in peace with God through Christ.

He also goes a step further to show that man has access by faith into grace and is able to rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
10. The apostle Paul said, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." What did he say was laid up for him as a result?

Answer: a crown of righteousness

Paul knew that the time had come for him to die for his faith. He wrote to Timothy, telling him that he was ready to be offered and that the time of his departure had come. He reminded Timothy that the crown of righteousness would be given not only to him but to all those who looked forward to the appearing of Jesus.
