Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which set of Christians did Paul entreat to study to be quiet and do their own business and work with their own hands?

Answer: Thessalonians

The epistle of Thessalonians was one of Paul's earliest writings. It was written during his first tour of Greece. In this epistle he gave some very practical instructions to govern the new life of faith which was embraced by the early believers.
In I Thessalonians 4:11,12 he encourages these new believers to be quiet, industrious and honest so that they would have no lack. In other words they would not fall into poverty. These are potent words which we would all do well to heed.
2. What does Solomon in his wisdom say is heard more in quiet than the cry of him that ruleth among fools?

Answer: the words of wise men

Solomon was the third king of Israel. He sought and received wisdom and understanding from the Lord. Three books in the Old Testament are accredited to him: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. In Ecclesiastes 9:17 Solomon declares that the words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

In quietness one is able to rightly understand and interpret words of wisdom.
3. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside ___ waters. (Psalm 23:2) What's the missing word from the King James Version?

Answer: still

In Psalm 23 David demonstrates confidence in the grace of God. He presents imagery that compares God to a tender shepherd who nurtures and protects his sheep. Sheep are timid by nature and must be led to quiet waters where they can be refreshed. In the same way our souls are refreshed when in the stillness of quiet meditation we spend time with our Divine Shepherd.
4. To whom or what did Jesus say the words, "Peace be still" as recorded in Mark's gospel?

Answer: the sea

After spending the day speaking many parables to the multitude. Jesus departed with his disciples in a boat to the other side after they had sent the people away. A great storm arose while Jesus slept in the hinder part of the ship. Fearing for their lives the disciples awakened Jesus who got up and rebuked the wind then spoke to the sea the words 'peace be still'. Immediately the wind quieted and there was a great calm.

His disciples were amazed and fearful as they pondered on the fact that even the wind and the sea obeyed Him. (Mark 4: 35-41)
5. Which set of persons did Peter counsel to have a meek and quiet spirit which is of great price in the sight of God?

Answer: wives

In I Peter 3, husbands and wives are counselled on their Christian duties. Peter makes it clear that women should be in subjection to their own husbands. Their focus should be on inner adornment rather than on externals. At the same time husbands should give honour to the wife as to the weaker vessel.
6. In the book of Lamentations, what does Jeremiah say a man should both hope and quietly wait for?

Answer: the salvation of the Lord

After lamenting his own calamities in Lamentation 3:1-20 Jeremiah then turns to the subject of hope in the ensuing verses. Despite the challenges Jeremiah recognizes that the Lord is good to those who wait for and seek Him. In verse 26 he reflects on the fact that it is good for a man to both hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
7. In which woman's song of praise to God would you find the line 'he will keep the feet of the saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness'?

Answer: Hannah

Having been barren for years Hannah prayed tearfully to the Lord and was granted her request for a child in the person of Samuel whom she promised to lend to the Lord. After weaning him she took him to Shiloh to remain with Eli, the high priest. While at the temple she worshipped the Lord there.

In her song of thanksgiving she rejoiced in the fact that her mouth had been enlarged over her enemies. She also recognized God's holiness and the fact that there was none that could be compared to him. Hannah paid tribute to God's willingness to turn circumstances around for his people. (Read I Samuel 1&2. Pay special attention to 2:9).
8. In which Psalm are the words 'be still, and know that I am God' penned?

Answer: 46

In Psalm 46 David refers to God as his refuge and strength. He recognized God as a very present help in trouble. As a result of this David recognized that regardless of turmoil and violence all around there was no need for fear. He saw God as one able to bring an end to wars.
It is for this reason that even in our generation we can have the assurance that when troubles beset us Psalm 46:10 speaks to the troubled heart: "Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."
9. Wind! Earthquake! Fire! God was not in them. Instead he spoke to his servant in a still, small voice. To which prophet did he speak?

Answer: Elijah

After the confrontation on Mount Carmel between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, Elijah fled before the wrath of Jezebel. In the wilderness he was ministered to by the angel of the Lord. He then went forty days and forty nights in the strength of that food to Mount Horeb where he hid in a cave.
The word of Lord came to him and asked what he was doing there. After experiencing the emptiness of the wind, earthquake and fire Elijah was able to recognize God in the still, small voice. (I Kings 18:17- 19:21)
10. Naomi told Ruth to sit still until she knew how the matter would fall because the man would not be in rest until he finished the thing that day. Which man was Naomi speaking of?

Answer: Boaz

In Ruth 3 Naomi instructed Ruth to mark where Boaz would sleep after he had made an end to eating and drinking. She was to go there after he retired and uncover his feet then stay there and he would tell her what to do. At midnight Boaz woke up and saw her.

He admitted kinship to her but told her that there was a nearer kinsman who he would have to speak to. After laying at his feet for the night she received a gift of barley and returned to Naomi. Boaz received permission to marry Ruth and they had a son whom they named Obed. Ruth appears in the genealogy of Jesus even though she was a Moabite.
