Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Saint Thomas More born?

Answer: London in England

Saint Thomas was born in London in 1478. In his youth he did work in the service of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Also, he did study law at Oxford as well as London. In his career in public life the king did send him on diplomatic and commercial missions to Flanders.

However, basically London was where he was born and died. As a student I was interested to see that there was a building in the Supreme Courts of Justice off the Strand in London called the Thomas More Building. The hearings conducted in the building included divorce cases.
2. Saint Thomas More was beheaded for what breach of English law and on the orders of which Monarch?

Answer: For high treason by Henry VIII

Saint Thomas More refused to swear the Oath of Supremacy that said that Henry was the Supreme head of the church in England. This situation had been brought about by Henry's split from the Catholic church in Rome. Rome would not grant him a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon to enable the King to remarry (he was desperate for a male heir) and Henry was in a sense taking the law (in every way)into his own hands.
3. In October 2000, Pope John Paul II established and declared Saint Thomas More the heavenly Patron of which group of people?

Answer: Statesmen and politicians

The Pope stated that he had been lobbied to do this by many persons from different political, cultural and religious allegiances, including several heads of state and of government.
4. Is it true to say that Saint Thomas More had held the post of Speaker of the House of Commons?

Answer: Yes

In 1523 he was made Speaker, having been elected to Parliament for the first time in 1504 under King Henry VII.
5. Saint Thomas More was appointed to his most important post in 1529. What post was he appointed to in that year?

Answer: Lord Chancellor

Saint Thomas was very skilled in law and he was the first layperson to occupy this position. It was a time of economic and political crisis in England, and Saint Thomas had a difficult job to do until his resignation in 1532.
6. Why did Saint Thomas resign in 1532 from the post that he was appointed to in 1529?

Answer: He did not wish to support the Monarch in taking over control of the Church of England

The King was in the process of divorcing Catherine of Aragon and marrying Anne Boleyn and the split with the Church of Rome over this matter was causing a crisis in the country.
7. Where was Saint Thomas More imprisoned in 1534?

Answer: The Tower of London

Saint Thomas is one of the famous prisoners that the Tower has held. He was subjected to much psychological pressure at the Tower as the King clearly wished to change his mind concerning the Oath of Supremacy and Saint Thomas's refusal to support it. If Saint Thomas had decided to support the Oath the King would have gained much public prestige and support from such a change of heart and by such a well known and liked public figure.
8. Pope John Paul II said that Saint Thomas More's life and Martyrdom speaks to people everywhere of the "inalienable dignity of the human conscience". Were the words in quotes what the Pope actually said?

Answer: Yes

Saint Thomas More had formed his own conscience on this issue and he did not allow anything (including a death sentence) to take it away from him. The Pope was holding him out as an example of how to hold a public office, by putting conscience before all other matters and especially personal interest.
9. When was Saint Thomas More beatified?

Answer: 1886

He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1886, together with 53 other martyrs including Bishop John Fisher.
10. When was Saint Thomas More canonized as a Saint?

Answer: 1935

He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935 at the same time as the canonization of Saint John Fisher. This was the 400th Anniversary of Saint Thomas's execution. Saint Thomas More also clearly showed how in the manner of his death he achieved more than a long life might have won for him.
